Caterham transmission and brake options
xflow7 replied to ce1984's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I will plan to put some collected wisdom of 5spd vs. 6spd in the Caterham one I'm doing. I've made some good headway, but have neglected it recently in the chaos of trying to move. Might be a good activity in the hotel room this weekend. Mazda, just saw your latest avatar. That's a bad-ass look for the car. Edit: Also noticing my avatar now looks very small. I'm going to have to re-size that image in order to cure my avatar envy. I already have power envy looking at most others on the forum. The last thing I need is a complex about the size of my stinking avatar. :bigears: -
That kayak is stunning. I'm hoping to tackle some kind of boat-build or other eventually. Can only hope it comes out half as nice.

Not a massive passion or time/money sink yet, but I'm planning to build a tube amp and some relatively efficient speakers in the not too distant future. The amp will probably be this: http://www.audiotropic.net/Projects/machine1.html once I gather some cash together to buy some decent trannies. Not as sure yet about the speakers, but have a few options in mind. The other (non-auto) thing I'm working on which, again, isn't quite a passion, but just a project to try my hands at is a half-hull model of the Spray (the boat that Joshua Slocum used as the first solo circumnavigator). I haven't worked on it in a while as I'm at a stage where I haven't quite figured out how to proceed with the next steps and I have enough time invested in it that I don't want to screw it up at this stage. Nothing exotic. All basswood with the exception of the bootstripe which is mahogany. I'm undecided on finishing but will probably do contrasting stains for topsides and below the waterline with the bowsprit and bulwark (once its added; that's the part I haven't figured out yet) as accents

I was definitely thinking of hitting the Vintage Grand Prix at the Glen and the Vintage weekend at Lime Rock. Can't make the summer historics at the Glen, though. (USGP weekend). A NEPa blat sounds like fun.

Actually, I've toyed with driving it as it's not really that far, but last weekend I noticed a peculiar little clunk somewhere in the front wheel assembly. I suspect it may be a wheel bearing (although the behavior is very strange). Anyway, I didn't quite want to risk finding myself stranded along the way and I won't have time to address it prior to the move.

Thanks, Steve. Just the kind of endorsement I was hoping I'd get.

Thanks for the thoughts, fellas. :grouphug: I think the job is going to be interesting, and I think I'm going to like the guy I'm working for. Watkins Glen is indeed close (~1.5 hours) and Lime Rock is not too far (~3-3.5 I think). In fact, first thing I did when I accepted the job was to see when there would be some races to go see. Of course, the two I'd most like to see (IRL at the Glen and ALMS at Lime Rock) are both July 7th which is the same weekend a buddy's getting married in LA. but big  :hurray: for my buddy who landed a keeper. And anyway, if he weren't I'd already be signed up for TOTD :jester: I also considered the Grand-Am race at the Glen but that's the weekend of the bachelor party. Anywhom, once my Seven gets here I'll be up for any kind of local gathering and there will almost certainly be autocrosses and/or trackdays in my future. Depending on what kit you select, the trick with large-ish (note, for a 7 large means > 2 liters :jester:) OHC engines is often height. Given that most (all?) BMW inlines are slant, it might work out, but the packaging may still be pretty tricky in a small chassis type (e.g. standard size Caterham and poss. Westfield) Edit: Just don't let any of the Brits find out you're putting a German engine in a Seven.

Tangentially related to this thread here, I will be having my Seven shipped from Ann Arbor to Binghamton in a few weeks. Does anyone have any experience with using Passport Auto Transport for moving specialty vehicles like LSIS's? I have done some research and they seem generally to have a good reputation and from speaking with them it sounds like they have equipment to properly tie-down, etc. But I'm gun-shy given that the last time I had the car transported it ended up damaged. I have a tentative booking with them, but any thoughts from those in the know here would be appreciated. TIA, Dave

Some of you may remember from some thread or other that I have been unemployed for the most of the year so far. Well, today I'm off to my first day at Lockheed Martin. Keen observers will note the change in my location from Ann Arbor to Binghamton, NY. The move is in progress, although I'm going to be holed up in an extended-stay suite for a few weeks and thus am Seven-less. :banghead: And an extra :banghead: for the fact that the weather here has been so nice the last couple of days. Anyhow, just wanted to close the loop and also thank those of you who had expressed concern/interest in my situation. Wish me luck! Dave

I'm here. :bigears: Is there coffee and donuts -
I was trying to remember if it was at that race that Rossi made that statement. The extent to which Rossi appeared to psychologically "break" Gibernau around that time really was amazing. After that moment, it was routine that whenever Sete found himself in a strong position in the race he would basically just drive of the track. Or Rossi would continue to drive the nail in by letting Gib get by with 2 or 3 laps to go and think he had finally beaten him, and then right in the last 2 or 3 corners Rossi would dig just a bit deeper and find a way back by. Amazing stuff.

Thanks. Proud to be here. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/thumbsup.gif -
Look really good, IMO. Very 'form-follows-function' which I think fits the LSiS very well. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/thumbsup.gif

I don't know much about the Rotus market, but I am planning to make a portion of the Caterham one cover the differences among the various used models people might come across. If there are significant numbers of second hand Rotuses for sale and/or variations among different generations of Rotuses, then I could see some value in a brief discussion of what a Rotus is and what the different versions were to cater to the buyer who may be interested in buying one pre-owned.xflow72007-03-27 19:14:03 -

I'll take a crack at the Caterham one. Sounds like fun; good excuse to go back and peruse some of my Seven bookshelf. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/biggrin5.gif -
Ah, didn't think of that. I bet you're right.

How come almost all of the note-cards/papers that late-night hosts use are the same shade of light blue (Letterman, Daily Show, Colbert Report)? Does it have to do with what is the most readable under the lighting conditions on set?

They just had this on CNN. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/biggrin5.gif Apparently they were filming a promotion for his new film (which makes more sense). Can't understand where the link got the "charity racing event" thing though. Car belonged to the executive producer of the film. D'oh! How to ensure you never have to work with a producer again. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/biggrinjester.gif

No idea what, if any, performance driving background Eddie Griffin has, but under the assumption that this "rehersal" was basically training, whose idea was it to do the training in an Enzo with a concrete barrier 20 feet from edge of the course? http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/confused5.gif Edit: It just occurred to me that the Long Beach GP and thus the Toyota Pro/Celebrity race is just 2.5 weeks away. If that's what he was "rehersing" for that makes it doubly stupid: Learn to drive in an Enzo in preparation for your race in a Scion.xflow72007-03-27 05:24:22

People in my office hear me coming long before they see me http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/smile5.gif I should think so! http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/biggrinjester.gif Mine often did as well, but sometimes I behaved myself coming into the parking lot.
