  1. I was thinking overnight (don't look shocked!) - I wonder if that gunk in the threads is coppaslip/copper grease as the prior owner was dealing with a sticky thread? Looks like it was applied at time of inserting the plugs and has a similar consistency after high heat application. I would feel a lot better if thats what it was - since it should not hurt the engine inner in miniscule trace amounts although you probably dropped more than that into the cylinder? If it were mud gunk then it should have dried up by now (and be easy to vacuum out). If it is still wet consistency then that will confirm it is a grease of some type. I think all would agree the street driving mileage is lower than you would reasonably expect. So your question is a very valid one to solve. So it is probably time for a retune on the dyno but before then - thinking my way through the air, fuel, spark equation: I would change those plugs to a heat spec suitable for your engine. Don't assume what spark plugs you have in there are correct - start from scratch and check as you may have the wrong plugs currently and that is part of your problem. Any evidence of piston scorching or carbon build up in each cylinder? Usually the signs of lean or rich running appear visible from a cylinder inspection through the spark plug hole. Does your exhaust tip look black with carbon deposits? If it is clean then did you clean it and was it black before? Any evidence of water or other contamination of the ECU? Edited to add: Still not convinced that crud on the plugs is not dirt/mud. Will be interested to hear if it dried out by now
  2. What is that stuff on the plugs? Mud?
  3. Vacuum cleaner - adapt something as a nozzle to fit into the spark plug hole.
  4. Tom's right - roll bar with a straight line to the front nose chassis member as that is the first structural piece of the chassis that would be on the ground if you rolled it. Its about two thirds of the way down a Caterham nose cone as you progress from front to back.
  5. But those Rover v8s had modest power only. In the current guise it is probably only 200-240hp.

  8. 1992, factory built, over 25 years old - so it was a full import at some point in the last 3 years. Looks a nice freshened up Caterham.
  9. Thats really nice. Dark colors always suited that design well. Aged very well for a 25+ year design. The only thing that missed its mark was re-use of Vauxhall Cavalier rear lights. I bet its quick - 2200lbs is still very light in production car terms
  10. Well done Mr Beagle. That is a good sale!
  11. Griffith? Oh now those like to hang the tail out! Like John said, Griffith pic definitely needed!!!
  12. Good question - For the advance pre-inspection it can be: (a) any qualified mechanic (local to you) who you think is professionally suited to inspect your Caterham/Birkin/Canoe/Stalker/Locost/Ultralite/etc (b) If you do not have access to such a mechanic in (a) then you can come in a little early and TK Autosports is next to the track and able to perform the same inspection the day before Sorry if I made it too confusing. Hope this helps
  13. The current standard Caterham fitment is the dash buttons in the linked ad. The older cars used plastic toggle switches. The exception to this is the 620R (and maybe by special option) which have a metal toggle with the protector hoops alongside.
  14. The ZZR on the CSR are used on the my 13 " wheels I can only use CR500 on the 15" wheels on the CSR - nothing else fits with the front wings. They still make the CR500 No idea of cost - was not memorizing it since you cannot buy them from anyone else and the Toyo 888R does not fit on my 13" wheel on the rears. Just give Roger Krause a call - I find they are fairly competitive.

  16. I think your best choices will be between the Avon ZZR or ZZS. They really seem purpose designed for the Caterham. The Avon ZZS was the partial replacement for the CR500 which used to be standard equipment on a Caterham. The ZZR is more track focused. It can be purchased in two grades of compound. For me the less sticky ZZR compound it was worth about 2-2.5 seconds a lap over the CR500 on the same track with the CSR going from 15 inch wheels to 13 inc wheels plus the change in tire. I think Seb had the stickier compound of ZZR and I lost sight of him. However, the ZZR has minimal tread. I would be concerned if you were on road and found rain or a wet road. So depending on your mix of driving then the ZZS may be a better option. I think this is the standard Caterham equipment tire for new kits now? I run these on my UK based Caterham and they are good. They definitely slide earlier than ZZR but they are a performance tire and breakaway progressively allowing you to anticipate and catch it. I tend to stick with the Avons as treaded tires for a Caterham as they have a lighter design which works well with our cars. They are always in stock at Roger Krause and they ship them east at a reasonable cost. I know others have use Bridgestones or Yokohamas so hopefully they chime in here with their views.
  17. I agree it would be entertaining. But isn’t this the job of the US importer/dealers?

  23. You do seem to be describing a light flywheel. I have driven Caterhams with the various flywheel weights and the lighter two versions can be tricky to get away smoothly. I am a little surprised the gearbox is notchy - how many miles on it? 2016 or later? The 6 speed initially starts off a little stiff and gradually eases up as it wears in. Does it feel vague like you cannot locate the next gear? If so then there is a little plastic clip that frequently breaks and can be sourced from the UK and replaced by removing the gear stick. If you have a standard CSR then you can order your clutch easily through Caterham UK by phone or by calling Raceline UK. For the record my CSR clutch is very light but I have a regular flywheel. It still has kangaroo moments if I am distracted and don't have enough throttle. Just a thought - Are you getting kangaroo hopping/stuttering when you pull away? There was a known CSR fault related to the throttle return spring needing to be beefed up on pre-2010 cars. For your question 6) the windscreen is actually a counter sunk bolt - 2 each side. Behind the scuttle there is usually individual nuts for each windscreen bolt OR there was an extra captive nut attachment (one each side) for both bolts that gets mounted. By your description you have the captive nut kit installed - thats a good thing. It actually makes changing between aeroscreen and windscreen really easy.
  24. For the bonnet, keep an eye on Ebay. Periodically a new unpainted Caterham S3 bonnet gets listed for sale. Not there right now but keep checking once a week regularly
