Triumph Spitfire should be the OEM. Also I think it was used on the Triumph Herald. Plenty of suppliers of those with a google. Moss Motors, Northwest, etc Also some race specialists have them for sale - e.g. here: Lotus 7 (leechapmanracing.com)

Steering racks on the Stalkers were more of a personal preference type of thing. I have heard of S10, Volvo, after market custom, etc steering being used on Stalkers. I looked at the photos of the car and think your steering effort is likely because it looks to be a 11 inch or 12 inch steering wheel. If that has been combined with a quick ratio steering rack then it will be worse again. Even a Caterham has heavy steering at slow speeds with a small steering wheel. If you mount a bigger steering wheel then the effort is reduced. There are set up options to consider as well. You can reduce toe to improve turn in responsiveness. Any car thats new to you should get a full wheel alignment to check the set up.

Could the older Stalkers be a wise purchase ?

I would also point out that the search function works quite well to filter out what you need. My recollection is you are correct on the S10 components. Shane @xcarguy - do you know the answer? Even though the Stalker business may be defunct, the family behind it are still around doing autocross in FL - calling Bob to the discussion @Anaximander -
An amazing trip up the hill; Pikes Peak that is!!

2023 - Caterham Track Day at Zandvoort and Zolder Circuits
Croc posted an article in Track Day Reports
Zandvoort and Zolder Circuit Track Days In June 2023 I had the chance to do two track days – one at Zandvoort, in The Netherlands and one at Zolder, in Belgium. The days were run by Lotus On Track UK. Their philosophy, like Lotus Cars, is to restrict participation to light, nimble, agile cars that are all about handling. They are specific in blocking heavy cars (e.g., Mustang, etc.) but allow non-Lotus cars like Caterhams, Porsche 911/Cayman, Renault Alpine. They also refuse to accept drivers with race licenses. This tones down the aggressive passing that seems to happen on UK track days when the race teams turn up for testing. This was my first time running my Caterham 420R with the Lotus on Track group and I enjoyed it. No red flags or frequent stoppages from people (or Ginettas) spraying off into the gravel traps when they run out of talent. Their calendar of track days is extensive and covers UK and Europe which helps fitting things into my calendar. The one aspect of running with this group is that several circuits they run at (e.g., Zandvoort, Spa-Francorchamps, Dijon-Prenois, etc.), require a cage be fitted to Caterhams. Given this requirement is on all the great circuits I like driving, I bought a roll cage and had it fitted to my car. Zandvoort Circuit The origins of this circuit date back to WW2 when in the immediate aftermath, the original race circuit was partly laid out on roads, built by the Germans, during their occupation. The circuit is laid out in amongst the sand dunes, allowing the track to undulate across the terrain. It has a fearsome reputation for deaths over the years and the safety has been considerably upgraded. Even so, run off is marginal in places, there are gravel traps right next to the curbing, and a lot of concrete walls to which potential for impact is close. The circuit was remodeled in 2019/20 as part of the upgrading for a new F1 contract. Several of the corners were modified to incorporate significant banking – turns 1, 3 and 14. Turn 3 is of considerable note, as it the most banking I have seen on any track anywhere. It is tight plus high (think 2 stories high). NASCAR has banking but it is not particularly tight on a corner, being a large oval. This is NASCAR oval type banking but in a very tight hairpin. It also has dual level of differing camber, like the Karussel at the Ring which creates some interesting handling effects as you dive into the banking. For sheer craziness, you can also belt into the corner and stay on the upper level which then just sweeps you around at high G’s. My neck was feeling the strain by the end of the day. Turn 14 feels like running a banked oval track but in reverse – reminding me of my time in the Mustang on Charlotte Motor Speedway where you were looking upwards to see where you were going. Call this a real old school circuit. You were conscious that if you got it wrong there would be painful and/or expensive consequences. Plenty of Lotus cars to admire in the pits. TFL Racing were doing the usual support for me, having brought my car from the UK to Europe for the two events. No official photographer but some on track photos collected from a variety of people over the course of the day. Credit to Edward Westerberg of International 7 Network for some on track photos of me. The character of the track suits a Se7en brilliantly. The undulating layout plus lots of tight turns, some with favorable camber, really suit a momentum style of driving. While the Porsche GT3s could be incredibly rapid, there really was only one decent area to put down any power advantage – along the main straight and maybe a little out the back of the circuit between turns 10 and 11. A Caterham 620R driver noted that he found it challenging to haul in my Caterham 420R anywhere other than along the main straight, which really speaks to how hard it is to put the power down as the car is never really moving in a straight line at any point. My overall assessment is that this is one of my top five racetracks I have run at, the others being Spa-Francorchamps, Mt Panorama, Portimao and Dijon-Prenois. I will be coming back to Zandvoort in 2024. At the end of the Zandvoort day, it was on to Zolder Circuit in Belgium. A quick overnight at Hotel De Pits (recommended), located right next to the circuit, then day 2 of the track day adventure began. Zolder Circuit This hosted the Belgian F1 GP for ten years when Spa-Francorchamps was out of action. It is sadly known for where Gilles Villeneuve lost his life in a crash. The track dates to the 1960s and is very much out of the spotlight today although it remains a well-known track for GT, DTM, and Touring Car events. It has an unusual technical character. First half is fast and free flowing. The second half is highly technical with three lots of chicanes and a hairpin. There are a lot of subtleties to learn to be quick on this circuit. Minor tweaks to your line can have a big difference to lap time over the course of a lap. For example, getting turn 1 wrong will impact your speed all the way until the braking zone for turn 5. Some images of the circuit to help visualize some of the corners. This is turn 1 - a fast 90 degree left. This presented me with a challenge. My 420R has the 5 speed Miata/MX5 gearbox. I found the ratios were just not compatible with the corners. Third was too high - select it and you ran out of revs by turn 3 with no place to shift or short shift. I ended up going into turn 1 with 4th gear and holding it all the way through to braking zone at turn 5. Not ideal as it felt like I was lugging it at 4-5000rpm. Chatting with a local expert validated that this was the right choice. This is the hump immediately after the turn 5 chicane. Last chicane leading onto the pit straight plus a piece of the pit entry road. The main straight along the front of the pits. The catch with this circuit is it is very strict on noise. Each car had to have a transponder mounted in the car so that the monitoring system could identify the offending car. First is a warning. Second is you are going home for the day. Measurement is 98db drive by with sensors at four points around the circuit. If you are within a second of another car, then the system cannot work out which car caused the noise break. Cars were being black flagged for noise all the time forcing them to come in for a chat. One Caterham 620R that I was running with was thrown off with a 98.1db reading. Another 420R with the 6-speed gear box was black flagged. This is somewhat concerning as all the Caterhams I run with have the additional track day silencer package. Standard muffler unit down the side of the Caterham. The pipe then extends through the wheel arch to under the rear end where a second silencer is installed. I have the same set up and this allows me to do 92db days at a variety of UK tracks. It’s a bit hard to understand the Zolder 15-foot distant drive-by noise failures at 98db when you pass 92db static tail pipe test at 4 or 5000rpm at UK circuits. However, there is no arguing or appeals if you are called out. I was being supported again by TFL Racing. Everyone who was at Zandvoort made the trek down to Zolder to make it a two day event. The track suited a se7en or for that matter a Lotus as it put a premium on nimbleness. I had the chance to follow a locally based pro, Cameron Hawes, in a Caterham for a few laps as he was instructing one of the TFL-supported cars. It was interesting to feel how seemingly minor adjustments in your driving lines could have magnified results on corner exit speed. One of the Caterham 620Rs took aggressively to cutting the corners and going over some curbs. The predictable result saw him loose his second silencer. In his words "the car got really loud all of a sudden!". Naturally he had a noise problem pretty quickly. Great race circuit and worth driving. I loved the series of first 4 corners as it provided a great challenge to get the sequence right to maximize speed. @BlakeJ @sf4018 Update on my Snetterton experience. I destroyed my set of these at Zandvoort and Zolder this week (also destroyed me but thats another story). These will be my "dry" tire of choice for the 420R UK track day car. They are very good plus get around where some operators have track day rules of "no slicks/road tires only". A slick tire might have an extra second a lap in it but in a non-race environment its not worth the effort. i think the new ZZR transmit a better feel for what the wheels are doing in a corner than the Hoosier slicks I use on my US CSR. I find they are mostly up to temp in 1-2 laps. Maybe a little more grip occurs by lap 3-4 with additional warming but you have enough by lap 2 to be starting to push on. Thinking of using them on the CSR now instead of the Hoosiers. They don't last long - 5 days usage on track since new - but they are very good.

Not sure I agree on the Mk15 comment. The body aero was far more advanced on the 15 than the 11. I always thought yours was a Mk 12? Yes the dealer has a very interesting reputation. But most people here are smart buyers and google the seller to check things and reach the right conclusions. -

Thunderbolt circuit will be a zoo. You will have access controls on the bridge leading to the paddock. Do you just want to get accommodation offsite in Millville or Vineland and borrow my garage loft for the day? I will be over at the Lightning circuit. Air con will be on. TV and wifi will be working. There is a bathroom. Only catch is the stairs but no worse than the villas. -

Yes the Thunderbolt Circuit is hosting FuelFest FuelFest - NEW JERSEY You would not want to stay over there anyway even if it was available as it will be a madhouse. There is something else booked on the Sunday. Offsite will be the sensible option. -
Not surprising - the EPA have been gradually taking out all the sellers of performance tuning products and it follows that dyno shops would be next given their connection to that market.

Damn good circuit. Reminds me a lot of the Slovakia Ring but better. Three hours with just Caterhams on the track with me. Sadly, I gave it away at 4pm when a few decided for a track orgy under the bridge on the back straight - much debris and unfortunate fluids sprayed everywhere. I had fun on the new ZZR compound. Felt stickier than the old ZZR compound I last tried on my CSR here in the USA. Much much sticker than the ZZS. The ZZR gave me a nice predictable breakaway on throttle when I needed extra rotation in the tighter corners - it took a lot for it to release. But gripped exceptionally well on the high speed corner stuff. Comparing them to a set of fresh Hoosiers like I run on the CSR here, the Hoosiers win every time. However, Hoosiers are not readily available in the UK. Compared with the Avon or Michelin slicks which I have run on the 420R before (and cost a LOT more than the ZZR/ZZS in the UK), then ZZR wins as my preferred dry tire and ZZS as my cold/wet tire. Taking both the new ZZR and ZZS to Zandvoort and Zolder next week and will probably get a chance to try them both again since the weather is looking somewhat uncertain.

The first one, the fastback, looks like a Ford Falcon XA or XB Coupe - 1975 John Goss Special Edition with the 302 Windsor and either a 4 speed T10 or a 3 speed automatic. It is the rarer Apollo Blue Metallic highlight paint version. That is worth serious money even in that state. Figure $80K+ as is. Its been modified in the rear suspension - looks like they were drag racing. These Coupes are seriously in demand now. I have seen bigger basket cases go for huge money. John Goss Special - Wikipedia There is money to be made in that car. But only if you ship it to Australia. The other is the Ford Falcon XB or XC sedan. Its a V8, assume a 302 Windsor or maybe the 351 Cleveland. Cannot tell much beyond that. Not as valuable as they were sold in the hundreds of thousands. Wonder how they ended up over here? Not sure I need another Australian basket case project - already have two of them.

Greetings and a Few Questions From a Wannabe Seven Driver
Croc replied to rider's topic in General Sevens Discussion
A frame went snap (at the 3 yo mark) and then I went for a very big ride. Thats how I learned A frames are to be considered a consumable on Caterhams, especially those that are doing a lot of track work. The way they operate to flex with the suspension makes them very susceptible to ail through metal fatigue, although mine likely had a small rock impact it at some point. A road car may go through its entire life without an issue but some of the frequent Caterham racers in the UK go through one or more A frames every year. Its an annual inspection item at the very least. The write up is here: Really this just reinforces the point, a Caterham is a a lightweight high performance car and not a Toyota Corolla. It requires a little more attention to ensure it is tip top. Regular checks of it are all thats required although some anticipation of parts failure points will serve you well. After 6 of these cars I am still learning things. -
Sure - we will survive an exocet invasion. The laughs will be great at dinner.

Time for another car of mine - 1972 Lamborghini Espada. I am the second owner. I eventually acquired it after it failed at auction in 2020. 33K on the odo. 4.4L V12. It has the special VIP Bertone interior - only 12 ever produced, 1 of 9 left and supposedly mine is the most original of those cars. The idea was to fix some deferred maintenance and then drive cross country from Seattle at Christmas 2020. It was winter, middle of Covid, a 50 year old car with deferred maintenance, what could possibly go wrong? As it turns out quite a lot. First day out I broke one of the voltage regulators and blew up the battery and one of the generators. After a somewhat desperate bodge of hooking two batteries in tandem and running on one generator and one voltage regulator I could survive easily if cruising above 25mph but was a bit iffy below that when needing headlights and wipers and heater at the same time. Eventually failed to break through east at Lake Tahoe with snow despite having snow chains (yes for an Espada!). Eventually turned around and headed back up the CA, OR and WA coast to Olympic National Forest. Did some touring and called in on @JohnCh Eventually stored the car back in Redmond WA until it warmed up plus to fix the electrical system. Then May 2021, I tried again. This time I headed east via Idaho, down into UT, AZ, NM, CO. It was a case of being hit by a drunk driver in ID. Seeing @kayentaskier in UT. Lost in Monument Valley on dirt roads. Tornado in Moab. Hailstorm in Santa Fe. Maxing the car in Mexico. Crossing snowy passes on the Million Dollar Highway in CO. Eventually, after 9000 miles I broke down conveniently in the workshop of Tom Carlin at Birkin America - clutch slave plus an oil leak at the water pump that was getting worse and could not be fixed without dismantling most of the front end. It is now at the workshop of a gentleman who has a vast collection of Lamborghinis and Lotus (Loti?), including an Espada. Getting the parts to fix things has taken over a year - thank you Italian part supply chains! Then it will be back on the road. Will stay out there in CO for a while as I have plans to road trip WY, MT, SD and more of CO Rockies - always wanted to drive up Pikes Peak in a classic car. It will be a multiyear drive east touching on most states - no rush as I always wanted to road trip the USA. This is the only way I can do it while working full time. Photo 1 - Morning of its meltdown. Just 4 miles to Birkin America workshop - no leaks here! Photo 2 - Still in Pacific North West here. Photo 3 - Monument Valley Photo 4 - Italian ergonomics in full display - someone vomited dials and switches over the dash. The siting of the radio was intentional to prevent women passengers from changing it. The gear stick boot is made out of real rhinoceros foreskin. Photo 5 - The car's forte. Sitting in the fast lane, cruising in 5th, crushing continental travel. I did 700 miles one day (5 fuel fills!) and popped out feeling quite fresh.

Too late - I discovered that trick in another of my cars - one I have not listed on this thread yet. Calling @xcarguy You are not alone with an Exo. @11Budlite Are we going to see you at NJMP this year with your Caterham? Exocets are allowed as well!

Sevens are reliable! Mine are anyway as I go through them end to end and make sure they are sorted. Yes they do have problems from time to time as the application is a performance car. You do have to be on top of monitoring things and your regular maintenance checks. Do that and all will be well. If I think of the various maintenance items on my various Caterhams over the last 15 years that required a bit of effort beyond the basics - oil, coolant, etc, then you have: 2004 Yellow Roadsport - clutch, fuel hose, coolant hoses, suspension bushes 2003 Red Roadsport - new shocks, clutch, fuel hose replacement, coolant hoses, suspension bushes, wheel bearings 2018 Silver 420R - new A frame (and a bucket of disinfectant to clean up the poo when it let go at 100mph on a fast sweeper at Croft Circuit) 2010 Silver CSR - new rear damper mount, clutch, battery, some alternator wiring, wheel bearings, change in oil catch tank solution, suspension bushes (x2), fuel pump, fuel pump seal (x2) Given the use I give them, I consider that a fairly respectable list of items requiring some work beyond the normal maintenance. Build it right day 1 and it is going to work well out of the box. -

Essentially cost of production. Its produced by Arch and not Caterham's normal chassis production line. The complexity of the chassis requires that level of jig precision that an increased production line could not handle. That prevented them from scaling up production numbers and so cost remained high. -
I promise I will shut up now but you presented such a wonderful opportunity for some sport!
