Mas Du Clos Park Circuit This circuit was originally created in the 1960s by Pierre Bardinon who wanted to have a private track to drive his Ferrari collection. How significant was this collection? Well Enzo Ferrari was once asked why Ferrari did not have a museum for its cars. Enzo replied he did, it was in France at Mas Du Clos. Pierre Bardinon purchased his collection in the 1960s and 1970s when the cars were cheap. At one point he had 300 Ferraris and another 200 non-Ferraris. His most famous cars? A 335S The 1958 Le Mans winner), four 250 GTOs, a 330 P4, 290MM, a 375 Plus and so on. Pierre died in 2012 and unfortunately to pay the French government taxes, the collection was sold by the family. Reputedly only 20 cars are left in the care of his son, Patrick Bardinon. The collection resides in the family chateau on the Mas Du Clos property. The Mas Du Clos circuit adjoins the chateau. You can drive out of the garage onto the circuit - chateau is the cluster of buildings at bottom right. The circuit was closed in 2010 as upgrade in FIA track safety regulations deemed it unsafe. Mind you, the original layout did have a corner where you aimed at a building (The Restaurant) that was hard up against the Armco. So it was no surprise that some upgrades were needed. Unfortunately, the Bardinon family were not willing to pay at the time. However, those upgrades were completed by 2022 and the circuit reopened under the operation of Alexandre Bardinon – grandson of the original founder. The circuit is laid out in a valley below the chateau. You will not find a prettier circuit setting in the world. There is huge elevation change on this circuit – characteristic of all the great circuits of the world. The photo below shows turn 1 around the rocky outcrop, with the terrain dropping off steeply on the outside of the corner. This is a rare photo as it shows the new layout changes made for safety. The newer dark track surface is the new chicane layout that keeps the track well away from the chateau outbuildings. The lighter worn track surface is the original track layout that went hard up against the buildings (bottom left of photo). Like most track maps there is zero appreciation of the elevation changes. Here is the main straight leading into turn 1 – a steep uphill approach. However, then you come out around the other side of the rocky hill only to be faced with what looks like a ski jump. In real life it does not feel that wild but it is a rollercoaster 2 mile track. This is looking back along the main straight towards the chateau. The pits are period correct – cramped and sloping. There are no food facilities here. Closest food is back in Aubusson, fifteen minute drive away. Fortunately, Phill of TFL Racing had scored prime position in the top pit paddock with epic views over the circuit and the valley below. The track is so tightly laid out into its setting that there is no way to walk around the outside of the circuit. The track would throw a full course yellow flag (slow down – no passing). The photographer would then get in their SUV with hazards flashing and drive around the circuit until the next photo point. Then the on-track action would resume. Part 3 of the article continues here

Last week I had my long overdue trip to France to revisit Circuit Dijon-Prenois plus sample Mas Du Clos Park Circuit for the first time. For those geographically challenged, Dijon is in the rough center of France. About a 3.5 to 4 hour drive south of Paris or the same distance west of Geneva. Switzerland. Mas Du Clos is a further 3.5 hour drive west of Dijon. I last did a track day in France back in 2015 – link to article below. While I got to try out Magny-Cours Circuit, I would not recommend it much. Too much zig zagging back and forth across a small piece of acreage. By contrast, Dijon Circuit was a gem. A flowing piece of asphalt that utilized significant elevation change with fast momentum style sweepers. It is an epic drive in a Caterham. First opened in 1972, the circuit has hosted the French Grand Prix five times and the Swiss Grand Prix once in 1982. Now the obvious question arises here – why would a Swiss Grand Prix be held in the country of France? That is because the Swiss Government banned motor racing following the catastrophe of the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans where 83 people died after a race car crashed and vaulted into the pit straight grandstand. Today the track is still used for many first class events, including FIA GT racing. So why would I ever want to come to Circuit Dijon-Prenois? That’s because in 1979 I watched the French Grand Prix which was a thriller for the intense battle in the closing laps between Gilles Villeneuve and Rene Arnoux where they swapped positions several times and did a lot of wheel banging as they fought for second place (as the race was ultimately won by Jean-Pierre Jabouille in a Renault). It took 8 years but I was back at Dijon. If you are thinking of coming to this circuit, then the most important thing to keep in mind is it is in the middle of the Burgundy wine region. Dijon is largish industrial city and while it has some charm, you would be better served to find a little village in the wine region and enjoy some time sampling the wine. Beaune, France So that is what I did – staying in Beaune – roughly 40 minutes south of Circuit Dijon. Beaune is the wine capital of Burgundy. The town is a walled city with roughly half of the walls still intact plus some of the moat. The old town within dating back to the 15th century is well preserved. Circuit Dijon-Prenois The circuit is laid out into the hills about Dijon. It has elevation in spades which is the key to why I like it so much. Do not look at the track map and think that looks boring – its most definitely not. The day was being organized by Lotus On Track Club. They specialize in track days for smaller, lighter cars with an emphasis on handling. The cars that turn up are your class Lotus Elige types, but you also see a healthy dose of se7ens and Alpine A110s. A nicely prepared Duratec Westfield with the FX body style. TFL Racing was again supporting me on this trip. They had four Caterhams running the Dijon and Mas Du Clos days. But they also had two other race cars (one being the hire Caterham 420 race car) in the truck as they were heading on after Mas Du Clos to Paul Ricard Circuit in the south of France to support a TFL customer who was running in a Caterham race that weekend. Having the hire car along as a spare was later to prove very fortunate for one TFL customer as it was raided for spares to keep that customer on track. TFL Racing is a sizable operation run by Phill and Sarah, who I have known for over 10 years dating back to their earlier Bookatrack UK involvement. They are now one of the largest Caterham support operators in the UK with something like 30 odd cars being supported for either track days or Caterham race series. They even support Atoms and Radicals although Phill is partial to his preferred racing fix – VW Fun Cup race cars – each to their own I suppose! If you want to try something like this then they have the Caterham 420 race car for hire for track days. A few USA7s club members have rented it over the last few years to tick off their European circuit bucket list must-dos. I had my 2018 Caterham 420R trucked out by TFL. An SV road car with the 2L Duratec with 210hp paired with the Mazda Miata/MX5 five speed gearbox. Not ideal for track work as the road car chassis is 85kg/187 pounds heavier than a pure Caterham race chassis. Further, the 5-speed gearbox is not ideal for ratios compared with the 6 speed Sadev sequential you find in the race cars. On these French tracks I was mostly third and fourth gear with one use of second gear on one corner. At Dijon I could go for fifth gear on the long straight, but it only added a little extra top end given it is an overdrive fifth. There was also a Caterham Superlight R present – one of the numbered limited edition series. Loved the number plate on that one! Unfortunately, the weather was not cooperative. Rain most of the day. Brief breaks of overcast with damp track interspersed with monsoonal rain. Fortunately, the pits provided some shelter. The photos show it well – standing water in many of the on-track photos. This Porsche 356 was a true survivor. Used for historical racing, they were doing a test day. However, it was slow. I misjudged how slow by coming up behind it on the straight and was astounded when I went past at warp speed. Lovely car though. Given the cold wet conditions I stayed on Avon ZZS tires for the day as that was my intermediate wet solution. One other TFL customer tried his full wet solution out (race wets), but he found himself steering towards standing water to prevent the tires from overheating. Fortunately, TFL Racing kept us well supplied with tea and biscuits and fuel. No photos of me on track as I was huddling in the pits when the photographer was out in the monsoon. However, one short video of the car coming along the main straight is below. Dijon main straight.mp4 The day was not a complete bust. At 3.30pm the track was dry and the sky cleared. I had 45 minutes of having a proper go of it. A great finish to the day. Aubusson Next day it was a transit day to drive over to Aubusson, the closest town to Mas Du Clos. Home of tapestry apparently. Lots of matronly women wandering around obviously enjoying things. Nice town although lacking in the quality restaurant area – the town felt very quiet after dark. Transit Day Repairs One advantage of coming on a trip like this with TFL Racing is the support you get. One TFL customer with a 620R lost drive at Dijon and was towed back in late in the day. Phill of TFL took the truck to the Mas Du Clos pits and proceeded to diagnose the problem – broken clutch. He used the hydraulic tailgate on the truck to lift the engine and gearbox out of the car, replace the clutch with one scavenged from the hire Caterham and put it all back together so the customer could have his day of fun at Mas Du Clos. This is harder than it sounds as the controls for the tailgate were at one end of the tailgate and the hauling point for the engine was at the other – one person doing this remember. Assume the Lotus position I suppose! Worst case the hire car could have been rolled out for the customer to have a drive. This is why I like the support you get on a long trip. There are no guarantees it won’t all go wrong on a long trip from the UK to the continent but at least you have stacked some odds in your favor with a quality operator. Fortunately, my car was trouble free, but it is reassuring to see things like this happen and get resolved. Part 2 of the article continues here:

I can say the beige leather Caterham seats in the Rotus came out of a 2004 Caterham SV I used to own - I sold him the seats. They do look good in that Rotus. -
There is a small Caterham racing series in the PNW organized by Beachman Racing. Not sure on rules but somewhat based around 420 race spec. I don’t think they have had to consider a non-Caterham joining them to date.

Yet the entire fields of Caterham UK race series competitors are doing exactly that when running this tire. A lot of people are wrong - its not going to be you or I to say which ones are. Logic to me says go down a size but then I see some very fast drivers who I am on track with say its not the right way. A conundrum eh? But it misses the point - the correct decision is to choose a different tire

I don't think it changes the end result to be honest. The size choice on front might improve the sidewall flex which is a clearly something to be considered for front end grip but it would have zero impact on the grip degradation over time as that is a rubber compound issue. The fact that everyone is doing the same thing for the race series in the UK tells me that it is likely the best option. TFL are supporting 40 something Caterhams in race and track days and the do talk with the other support outfits, McMillian being the next biggest. What I was given is the best consensus in UK Caterhams right now. Not really a great answer for you tbh but I did not have unlimited time to experiment.

I used 3 sets of tires this week on track in France. 1) Avon ZZR extreme compound - the last runs of my last set of these 2) Avon ZZS - I use these as my intermediate/wet 3) Toyo R888R - my first time using these. I am going to focus on the Toyo R888R with points of comparison to each of the ZZR and ZZS as these tires are no longer readily available. The Caterham for this exercise was a 2018 420R SV. The Toyo R888R were 205/60/13 used on all four corners. Interestingly, I have a stagger wheel set up - 6x13 on the front and 8x13 on the rear. The same Toyo tire size was used on both wheels. The end width result looks like this. I was running at cold pressures of 17psi with the objective of 22-23psi hot. I did not get the opportunity to experiment much with pressures to see if they responded better with variations. I strongly suspect (when you read my impressions below) that a lower front pressure will work better. I don't have a set of final suspension set up numbers. I was running the traditional ZZR set up with a little more neg camber than what Caterham publish in their build manuals. I think that is too much when it comes to the Avon ZZS use and for the Toyos as well. I have asked for my car to have its suspension reset to standard Caterham manual track use when it gets back to the UK from France. My impressions: Very little scrub in needed on the Toyos compared with both Avons. The Toyos feel fairly grippy out of the box whereas the Avons used to have a greasy feel until you scrubbing them in somewhat. For the first 1 hour on track the Toyos feel almost as good as the ZZRs - within a second a lap. They are close to equal the ZZR on lateral grip - not quite as good but not that far off. Where they are some off on the ZZR is in-line grip - braking distances are not as short - I was surprised as to the difference. Its not as if the wheels are locking - I am ensuring that does not happen - but you have to be thinking braking slightly earlier, particularly downhill braking. This change is what accounts for 90% of the slower lap time by the R888 versus the ZZR. The R888 transition from braking to cornering is not as adept as the ZZR - you have to be far more precise in your driving whereas the ZZR is more forgiving of hard driving. I think that is driven by the tread pattern difference between the two. After the first 1 hour on track the R888R goes off. There is plenty of tread. The tire looks fine. But it is a very different tire in grip feel. Loses a modest amount of lateral grip and a really noticeable amount of in-line grip. Stopping distances increase slightly on the level and a noticeable amount on the downhill braking - felt like 1-2 car lengths over the ZZR and ZZS. Turn in grip is noticeably weaker in this second phase of the R888. I would have liked more time to see if dropping front pressures more helped the situation - I suspect it would have assisted somewhat but not a lot. The Avon ZZR and ZZS are great for grip consistency over their entire life. The Toyo is not like that. You get an hour and then the grip degrades a notch down. I have not driven on a track tire like that since the late 80s/early 90s when tires going off was a fairly normal part of car racing. Since then a lot of work has been put into tire compounds to make them more reliably consistent for grip over the full life - however, the R888R does not do that. Its a remarkably quick transition too - I felt it happening over 1-2 laps My experience with the R888 matches what the race guys are doing. They are using fresh Toyos for qualifying and then going to fresh Toyos for the race. This way they get the best grip phase of the tire for their competition but then throw the virtually unused R888s away afterwards. This explains why the race support guys have a huge store of 1 hour old tires lurking. Fortunately the R888 are half the price of the ZZR (when it was available - UK retail) but this is an expensive exercise for us just having some track day fun. To get the best out of the R888 then a precise driving style is required. Both the ZZR and ZZS were very forgiving of driving styles on the edge when things could be pressured or sloppy. For the pro driver this is not an issue but its a major issue for those on this thread as I bet none of us are driving with that level of precision lap in and lap out. If I had to rank the tires - clearly the ZZR are at the top with high consistent grip levels. In teh first hour then the R888 is a second place to ZZR, a clear notch below. The ZZS would be in third place at this point but its not by much. After the first hour then the R888 is worse than the ZZS - a clear big notch below. If the ZZR was ignored, then the R888 vs ZZS clear choice would easily be ZZS for me - consistency of grip over time, better stopping distances and roughly equivalent lateral grip plus its tread pattern makes it a good intermediate/light wet whereas the R888 suffers like the ZZR did in the wet. For my next set of dry track tires the plan is to follow the Roger Krause suggestion (USA - take a Formula Continental slick) which in the UK will be an Avon Motorsport slick and then hand groove a ZZR tread pattern into them. The slicks are still available from Avon in the UK only the ZZR/ZZS have supply issues. For intermediate/moderate wets, I have one set left of the ZZS so will continue on them for now. No ZZS alternative has emerged in the UK yet as there are enough ZZS stocks at TFL Racing to continue using them. If you can get them in the USA then this is my second suggestion instead of a ZZR if the preferred hand grooved dry slick option does not appeal.

They are perfect for autocrossing. There are some committed autocrossers on here so not sure why no one has commented? For myself, I have always preferred race tracks as you get a longer time behind the wheel. Pros and cons for each way I suppose. -

Will add a reminder to my calendar. I dont think its same tire in the race 420s as most have a stagger wheel set up, including my car. The Academy is square wheel set up but I dont know what model Toyos they are running there. Oh and I will not be in the UK - Dijon and Mas Du Clos in the center of France.

I run the Hoosier R7 on the CSR on track in the USA. Love them. Definitely quicker lapping than the Avon ZZR extreme compound. Good life to them as well. I think I use them in 13x7 and 13x9 on my car - not next to it to check sorry. As for Avon ZZR extreme versus Toyo R888, I can let you know 10 days from now when I am at Dijon and Mas Du Clos. I have half a set of the Avons left and a fresh set of the Toyos to go on. The only reason I went for the Toyos as a replacement is that slicks are not allowed and the best treaded tire right now, per TFL Racing who support 40 something Caterhams for race and track, are the Toyos. However, I have been told to expect to be slower by 2+ seconds a lap over the Avons - sad but thats it for now. Edited to add I did talk with Roger Krause two weeks back about what others are doing without the Avon ZZR. His solution is to take a Formula Continental slick and have it hand grooved. Gives you the life of a slick but the appearance of DOT. I have also heard that someone else is doing this is Michelin F3 tires. Depends on whether a DOT label is checked I suppose? Roger is well plugged into the owner of Nova - he's the guy for supplies when Nova is up and running.

The major insurance companies track that shit to pre-populate your quote next time you come to buy and you do not want to be checking price options on answers that only have one correct legal answer. No idea if Hagerty does that but don't take the risk. -

Hagerty offer track days and offer track day insurance. Their standard insurance policy does not cover you on track. Be careful with insurance comparisons. Insurance is state based. Premiums are based on a bunch of location stats plus your individual driving record. The standard mileage for Hagerty is usually 3K per year. They have checked me once in 20 years. The agreed value is a fair point of comparison. Hagerty historically was a Managing General Agent and relied on other insurance companies to provide the state-admitted insurance policy paper (with the Hagerty branding. While they have now bought their own licensed carrier it did not cover all states and they were still working through the regulatory stuff to get their own admitted insurance policy paper which takes a long time. I think for Oregon, Hagerty was using Essentia Insurance which is owned by Markel out of Bermuda (they are good don't worry). The thing you need to check is what limits for liability and property damage Hagerty have given you and whether they match where your umbrella personal liability policy starts at. If it does not match then you have just exposed yourself to potential liability. Its not an investment. No guarantees but if the future holds true to how its played out over the last 10-15 years then I would expect that the value initially declines in the 0-5 year mark - call it $10K worst case over that time. The value then continues to very slowly decline to reaching a plateau from 10-20 years - it reaches its floor around 20-25 years. Specialist cars are usually inflating at the inflation rate (or more if really collectible) by their 25 year age mark. Caterhams that are early 2000s are bringing $30-40K today 20 years on - depending on condition, spec level, etc. They were were being sold at $40-50K+ original price then. Your $10-15K value loss/depreciation estimate is fairly good. However, you are quoting nominal prices. Over time the real value (i.e. inflation adjusted) has declined. So a dollar today will be worth roughly 15-20% less 10 years from now than it is today. Add that to your nominal depreciation for a true value check. So its not an investment but it is a fairly decent proposition in having automotive fun with far less of a dent to the wallet than say buying a new sports car like a Miata or Nissan or Toyota or BMW. Keeps it in a better proportion. The two wild cards in all of this are: 1) politicians talking about phasing out internal combustion. It is possible with their stupid logic that they jack up emissions testing retroactively and then we end up with what is known as "stranded assets" I doubt it but its possible. But you should still be able to use a Caterham on track. 2) The aging out of the population. We tend to desire the cars of our early teenage years. Roll forward to when us folks have money to acquire these cars - usually at the 20-25 year mark, thats when the cars start to boom in value. Pre-war cars used to bring top dollars but they do not now as their population has mostly aged out. You are starting to see relative declines in 1950s-60s car values now but it will take a lot of time for the boomers to roll off. You are also seeing the rise in values of 1980s-90s classics as that population cohort ages into their prime. Most people who got into se7ens have some recollection of the Lotus seven who are an aging cohort. The later folks got hooked some other way. Is the population of se7en buyers aging out in net head count or holding static? Gut feel with numbers tells me its aging out very slowly. Ask me again in 10 years! The other way to consider value - its cheaper than a divorce and about half the price of what you pay for a kitchen renovation in Manhattan and you get to put a smile on your face and keep you sanity. I sound like a Mastercard commercial eh? -

I think this is a Europe only thing. Read between the lines in the press release - usual cute language that I am used to seeing. They have enough Duratecs for two or more years of orders. I expect the real reason for phase out is regulatory - need to meet a lower emissions standard that is being phased in at the end of this year in the EU. It will be interesting to see what the replacement powerplant is for Europe as that will preview what the civilized world gets eventually in their Caterhams.
