  1. My old Birkin came with a rear-exit exhaust, which was the worst. The fumes would be pulled up over the boot from the rear and into the cockpit. The smell settled in my hair/hat and jacket/shirt around my neck and shoulders. You want to direct the exhaust both down and out, to prevent it from coming up over the rear wing from the side, or beneath the car and up over the boot from the rear.
  2. Was it like this? I would also like to see one up close.
  3. A moment of Zen. Much appreciated.
  4. Conveniently I don't have a photo showing the rears, it is indeed ugly... Like socks and sandals... :ack: I have standard Caterham rear wings to cover Toyo R888 185/60 on Panasports for the track. I don't swap for narrow S2 wings when I put the steelies on for show and street, that would be too much trouble for me. I can tell you that it is much more fun to drive on the street with skinny tires. The steering becomes light as a feather and it drifts around every turn. Really, folks don't notice how nerdy it looks. Really. They don't. :leaving:
  5. I believe that the original fitment was 132 (!) but I might be wrong. http://www.automobile-catalog.com/tire/1962/1432010/lotus_seven_a.html I have the 145's on an original set of the optional wheels with elan-style cutouts; but I don't recall that makes a difference in tire size.
  6. There is more to this story: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turboencabulator There used to be a detailed Wikipedia article about Bud Haggart, but the morons deleted it. Most of the video versions mentioned are still on YouTube/Vimeo.
  7. Pumas are sized funny, but my experience is that they are consistent. If your local stores don't have the style you want (like Drift Cat III or whatever) then try on whatever they happen to have. Once you know the "puma" size, then order what you want online in that size.
  8. I'm taking my '66 Super Seven to Putnam Park on Sunday. I've got some new Toyo R888's 'cause that's all I could find in 185/60-13. I'd like to know a good tire pressure to start with on the track. What do you guys run with this tire?
  9. Caterham 7: the Big Project a.k.a Caterham:Survival of the Fastest from 2003 is out-of-date but gives a clearer impression of the company.
  10. Webers are going to smell, but if it is permeating into your home then something is wrong. While you are at it, also check the soft mounts. These won't cause the problem; but if they aren't sealing well, then they might contribute to making it worse.
  11. Q: What's the difference between a Car Salesman and a Politician? A: At least the Car Salesman usually knows when he is lying to you! :smilielol5:
  12. Here's a bit more... http://theoatmeal.com/comics/tesla :conehead:
  13. I had a similar issue once on my Birkin. A hairline crack had formed through the body of one of my Weber DCOE 45 carbs. The mechanic who found it said he had seen this type of failure several times before. It was always on twin carb setups. He said the cracked carb was always in the same position, but I can't remember if it was the front or the rear carb. (Too many years ago.) He was able to repair the cracked body, so I did not need to replace it. Again, I don't remember how he fixed it. http://www.beltfedshooters.com/forum/images/smilies/oldman.gif
  14. Happy Christmas! Happy (Seven) Christmas! Does anyone know these folks, or are they on this forum? I found this one several years ago. I still think its a riot! Notice that St. Nick never puts down his cigarette! :smilielol5:
  15. I owned an early version of Brunton's trailer. They built it narrow enough to fit through my garage door. It was great.
  16. Rotus was an American Lotus clone from years gone by. They were larger than the original, like the Stalker. http://usa7s.com/vb/picture.php?albumid=66&pictureid=457

  19. My old Birkin had the SPC gearbox and a 2L Zetec on Jenvey throttle bodies. I thought it was fantastic. Some folks complained that 1st was a bit tall for street driving. My Birkin had the 4.11 rear end and I didn't think it was uncomfortable at all; however, I never drove it in stop-and-go traffic.
  20. I had one and it was very jumpy. I believe the problem was how my exhaust was configured. There just wasn't a good place to mount the lambda sensor.
  21. I towed my Birkin behind my Saab 9-5 wagon. If memory serves me, it has a tow rating of 3000 lb. I do remember that the Birkin and trailer were so light that I hardly noticed.
  22. I have noticed that animals and children are not cautious when I approach, and I have to be especially careful. :auto: Once, before I learned this lesson, I was motoring along and came upon a duck sitting in the middle of the road. It turned its head and watched as I came closer, and finally decided to move out of my way at the last moment. It look flight TOWARDS me! It came straight at my windshield, and barely cleared my head and roll bar. I felt it pass over. I don't know if it was the disturbed airflow I felt, but I swear it was the webbed feet dragging across my cap!
