where do i get replacement front brake pads for a live axle caterham
danilo replied to twobone's topic in General Tech
Try here for an '80 Spitfire . I typically prefer PBR/axxis Metalmasters Or Ceramics as daily driver 'good' pads.. But it's a Light car, so even the Triumph OEM ones work passably. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php Prices vary from $8 to $24 :-) -
Possibly the master cyl and the slave have a Missmatched Ratio?? Wouldn't be the first ones to make this basic mistake. Might also not be fully releasing? As a decades long Saab owner, I've a love hate relationship with Annular Slaves. Often wishing for the simplicity of a normal, laughably easy to replace advantages of an external slave with lever arm.

Your overall favorite engine for a Lotus 7 variant.
danilo replied to Ruadhd2's topic in General Tech
turbo kent is just a joke.. been there done that... 30 yrs ago. Unreliable and fragile 180 hp is Pure Delusion.. 'nuff said. S2000 car is easily left fer dead buy a Saab 2.0 (let alone the 2.3 version) turbo engine in a Saab 4 door sedan car . Imagine the perf differential in a Seven transplant ...at 1/4 the Honda's wrecker cost... just to add insult to injury. Sadly the Saab 3 cyl 750cc 2 stroke was 65(?) HP in factory race trim 40/50 'stock', back when it was current. Certainly an Interesting Gizmo but only genuinely competitive against the horrid waste of metal A series engines from BMC. 'Busa engine unit at the typ $3k wrecker price remains as the Best "go fast" choice IMO.. albeit more than a bit frenetic in use, taking some getting used to. But Absolutely thrilling to use. Test Drive one and see for yourselves ?? -
Along that line of thought My Lotus S2 had a painted stick (like one of those free wooden paint stir sticks but longer) as Supplied.. oem by Lotus with the Seven. Undo tank cap... Insert stick .. Read fuel level contained. Primitive as a stone axe.. But 100% accurate. Make one and carry it as backup ?

Been 'fooling' with turbos on my pore old Saabs since '84. In truth I ..Have.. bungled a lot of setups over the past 25+ years..but have also learned along the way that a LOT of Boost claims are simply BS. Be Absolutely sure that what you are buying .. actually.. delivers what the Brochure Babble claims... before.. handing over your hard borrowed $$. There's More than a lot of unsubstantiated claims tossed about.. Caveat Emptor genuinely applies. Just My 2 cents :-)

My direct experiences with Bosch "blue" coils of semi recent manufacture is that they are of abysmal quality. Perhaps this Info on ballasted vs non ballasted coils may be of use? http://www.vtr.org/maintain/ballast.shtml
-
Replace the Coil ?? Typical symptom of a crapped one is Not revving past 3k.
-
Hopefully you've sorted it? Don't discount the possibility of a bad coil, especially the Bosch 'blue' type. I've had 2 of the excreable things die within a few months of install... right out of their Bosch boxes.. which said 'Made in Brazil (in a corner :-). Distributor of the things suggested reverting to the OEM coil, which I did and subsequently never looked back. OEM Bosch seems to be of a much higher standard.

Unfortunate experience.. I hope it didn't dissuade you?. Did you scroll down (first hyper link I posted) to the list of downloads (gold coloured Cat logos as buttons ;-) The screen saver download link is the last one on the list . As reference these are just above the photo of the seven with snow falling on it. I checked it again .. just now .. and it worked 'perfectly' ...for me at least. Hope it will work for you... I enjoy it 'popping up' on my screen ..unexpectedly :-) On faith and small experiences I presume that Steve Carter's images /files are clean and competently done. Clearly he has proven and genuine skills in this area. Unlike me :-)

Steve Carter is a damned good Photographer and has made a 70 pics (8mb download ) "Super Seven' Screen saver. I've been enjoying it for 5/7 years. Happily it's Still available... If you don't yet have it. http://www.stevecarter.com/cat1.htm IF you like that look at the rest of his work examples ..nice bit on his 'owned' cars too.. search around, also found as Sadgit.net http://www.stevecarter.com/Home.html

In my 40 + years of observations Small shop dynos are sold as 'profit centres' inaccuacy/inconsistency is expected. Don't put much credence in dyno sheets. You really wanna Turbo? I just tripped over an interesting factoid (presumably it's accurate ?) A Saab 2.3 engine (94 to 98 Only!) is a whopping 20 lbs Heavier than an S2000 engine. Odd as it's Block is cast Steel (neither Iron Nor Ali with liners) Clever Swedes . The Saab being complete with turbo and ALL ancillaries.. I was amazed. Saab engine, oem is at the bottom of it's potential Performance curve however. It has massive inherent strength reserves, clearly Swedes were Very conservative engineers. Honda is highly tuned oem... Not a lot of reserve left at all imo. Used Saab engines are worth Beer money to buy outright.. true. Yes I own a couple, so there is some bias :-) No dissing Hondas', I also have a new Honda 600RR and an Acura in the garage :-) The ECU setup on a Saab is absolute Genuis.. true. They have No Air mass meter, the ECU uses the Sparkplugs as Sensors, analysing after EACH spark event on each plug and adjusting for timing and fuel delivery and boost on each cylinder ..constantly. Swede overkill basically but V effective. Not likely you will find this on some goofy aftermarket ECU, that isn't worth more than your car to buy . A simple DIY ECU tune (there is even a "wizard' pgm to do this' ) brings power up to 280 hp with no hardware upgrades required. That's 20/22psi boost by the way. Low boost high HP numbers are always erm 'suspect' IMO as are TQ numbers that are lower than Hp ones. That's also well over 320 ft lbs. Frankly dunno if the Honda box can absorb double, let alone triple it's oem Torque.. But then a seven has lowish intertial mass and some fit Bike engine units with some although imo frenetic success. 400 hp is for the taking , requiring only a larger (ie: Holset ) turbo and higher rate Siemens injectors... 25/28psi boost levels though. Approx $1k in brand new bits, plus a bespoke Intercooler may be needed to fit in the seven I would expect. Dunno HOW one would get a competently sized one in Any Seven in any event.. but that applies to any turbo setup in any seven. Lunatics have reached 600 hp and one tuner is claiming to running this on the street.. that I find dubious, but not the hp achieved. Long babble :-) Just saying that there are; as always, Alternates sometimes Very good ones, often overlooked.

For an Europa?? yes H4's 'help' .. some. But in truth a pair of KC Hiliters bolted to the roof of that thing wouldn't be a misstake either. That *car* is genuinely More frightening in traffic than any Seven. Outward visibility just sucks in those. Hell you simply... cannot... see beside or behind you. Seeing further in front , while nice, will have NO impact on survivability in traffic. IMO those hideous contraptions are an accident awaiting an occaision. PS: I owned one for 12! years. Next owner Died in it within 2 weeks... true.

NOT STOCK! deduct $20K

Frankly I'd hold out for either a Genuine Lotus Seven or a Caterham. Colleague recently bought a one owner series 3 Lotus Seven with the 1600 Kent engine & down draught carb, a whopping 84 Hp.. maybe. But it's a blast to drive, despite the wee motor (which IMO is lotsa fun despite the lowly specs) and as a one owner 'genuine' (not clone of a clone) car he paid $30K for it. Likely he can sell it on for $5k more whenever he wants to. Besides, all the visual proportions are exactly right, there's No mistaking it for a Clone Or being embarassed/having to mumble when some kid asks you what is it Mister?.. ever :-).

Interesting drawing indeed, noticed that you have made the front susp mount tubes parallel. Which is very efficient for wishbone mounting But doesn't that alter the entire appearance of the front section, as the taper angle of the ali paneled bits meets the nose cone in a no longer continuous line ? Can the drawing be a bit larger? Sadly my eyesight isn't as good as it used to be :-)

Give thought to Not blocking the water circuit. Plugging a line/flow is likely not the best approach. IF you must.. then at least cross connect(shunt) the in and out flows/lines. OR if one wanted to retain the 'bit extra' rad volume of the heater core, simply block the heater's air exits into the car ?

As a teenager I had an Hillman "drophead' A convertible with Landau arms :-) It had one of those engines. It could do a MAXIMUM top speed of 55 mph God Knows I tried :-) Dunno WHY? yer enamoured with it. Cast Iron Crap is the Only adequate/honest descriptor. But Hey! IF you follow through with copious time and money..you will soon know this first hand.. just giving you a 'heads up :-) Even the worlds' cheapest man 'Colin Chapman' had to fit bespoke 'aquaplane' heads (British equivalent to Edelbrock head, except for a wee 4 cyl flathead) to the excreable things to make them get out of their own way.

C'mon.. demand and GET a healthy price correction for the RHD. Despite all claims it IS a PITA to live with. Been there done that. One can convret to LHD fairly easily. on these cars of all cars . And if there is no satisfaction re a decent price reduction Keep yer CAsh and wait.. Average tenure of these cars is 18 months.. true... just wait a bit longer for one that fills your needs

Maybe faulty Ignition (petronix are decent but hardly outstandingly reliable) ? I'd check fuel flow, either some movable obstruction in the fuel tank (once had a Gas cap gasket (in the bottom of the tank slide around and occaisionaly covering the fuel outlet. Took me weeks to find it :-) Also there is possibility of water condensing in the fuel tank.

Thank you..for the info. GAZ also '3 way' adjustable but there is 'at least' $100 shipping from the UK. So no obvious advantage/disadvantage either way as far as I can tell. Rebuilding of Shocks, has in my experiences pretty well equaled the cost of new replacements.. but they never mention 'that' in the Sales Brochure :-)
-
Certainly look nice. How will the Ali Adjuster threads wear after a few miles of pounding on them? Also what are the pricings ?' More or Less than Gaz adjustables ($600 Set with springs)

Middle East issue? Big in Bahrain?

From Memory :-) Kents were a fairly erm .'early'.. engine design. Blowby is inherently excessive by most all moderne engine standards. The things lose a portion of the combustion event past their no longer brand new rings. Increasingly so after a surprisingly few miles of use, especially If one even occaisionaly 'steps on its tail' :-) Repeated /timely rebuilds were the normal expectation with these Often knowledgeable people fitted a wee ss one way valve into the collector portion of their Exhaust header. This was then hose connected to the Engine breather. Stopped the (visible blowby smoke effects) problem Entirely. "Worked" 30 years ago.. Likely to work still :-) G'luck
