t walgamuth Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I am looking for a seven to autocross. I'd like an S2K motor and IRS. I also would like to keep the investment as close to the 15K I have in cash as possible. I am not too hung up on cosmetics but want light and fast and ready to autocross if possible. Tom Walgamuth 765 49zero zero275 Lafayette In. I'd like to purchase from east of the Rockies if possible but will consider any reasonable car.
t walgamuth Posted February 26, 2015 Author Posted February 26, 2015 I have made a deposit on a D mod car from Milwaukee. So it looks like I am all set with a 7 to autocross. Thanks very much!
Croc Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Good luck with it - of course I know you will win - you have a Seven!
Anaximander Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Wow Walgamuth, that was a pretty fast acquisition from general query to purchase. What did you end up getting in the D Mod class? Did it come with a set of slicks for xcrossing?
t walgamuth Posted February 26, 2015 Author Posted February 26, 2015 It was fast. I did a lot of looking and researching in the time though. This car has been on the market for a while on the SCCA forum but I had not seen it before I placed my want to buy ad. It is an excellent car with a great history and I am in a position to make the purchase, so I jumped on it. It has an Accura 2 liter motor with hot cams, a quick change rear end and dry sump. Its been dynoed and shows 230 hp with a nearly flat torque curve, ideal for autocrossing. It comes with three extra sets of wheels including rains, hoosier slicks and goodyear slicks. It is near the weight limit but because I weigh 25# more than the current ownerr I'll be doing some weight reduction on it and there is some low hanging fruit available to do that. It has a rocker front end but a live rear axle. It has been a race car for years and had many podium finishes and victories at the national level. Its the only really autocross ready car I ran across and it was no more than many on offer that were really street cars and would have required extensive preparation on my part. I feel got very lucky. Thanks for the kind comments. I'll be around.
Robert O. Urfer Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Here is what he bought. http://www.sccaforums.com/forums/aft/446421
xcarguy Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 t walgamuth, Congradulations and welcome to the club. How about a photo or two? :seeya:
yellowss7 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 (edited) WOW!!! If I remember correctly, that car is a multi National SCCA Championship winning car. You certainly are going to be a player in the DMod scene if you can drive a little. :jester: Best of Luck with it and the autoxing. Tom Edited February 26, 2015 by yellowss7
t walgamuth Posted February 26, 2015 Author Posted February 26, 2015 You are right about the car. I'm not so fast but I'm gonna give it my best try. I tried to download pics earlier today but got stymied with some sort of software issue...or something. I'm gonna write a book about the season and call it "Fast car, slow driver";)
Croc Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 You will have to find a new title. Yellowss7 has already written that book!
t walgamuth Posted February 26, 2015 Author Posted February 26, 2015 How about "very fast car, very slow driver!";)
xcarguy Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 You will have to find a new title. Yellowss7 has already written that book! I thought Tom's book title was 'The Not-so Good, The Really, Really Bad and The Fugly'. And Mike, why are you on the cover holding a HILLARY FOR PRESIDENT sticker? :jester:
panamericano Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 So, another site to bookmark. Must not be on Croc's webb crawler's radar. Nice tip, Mr. Urfer.
t walgamuth Posted February 27, 2015 Author Posted February 27, 2015 (edited) Here is a picture of the car at speed with Jeff Cashmore driving. I dig the tractor flapper on the exhaust. Edited February 27, 2015 by t walgamuth
Mondo Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 I think there's a lot of us with cars that are better than their owner/drivers
t walgamuth Posted April 25, 2015 Author Posted April 25, 2015 Here are the pics. I came here today to look at weights for cycle fenders. I have run two events now. The car is explosively fast. You do a lot of steering with the throttle. The handling is very benign and you can get further sideways in it and still catch it than any car I have driven. Woooo Hoooooo! Its a gas. That's the PO driving. I don't have any yet with me driving.
t walgamuth Posted April 28, 2015 Author Posted April 28, 2015 So anybody have a weight including brackets for the cycle fenders?
t walgamuth Posted May 8, 2015 Author Posted May 8, 2015 Ran another event on Sunday. this time had two other drivers sharing a pretty fast D mod with Honda s2000 motor....both experienced autocrossers (20 years plus). Both have a lot more experience in their car than I in mine. The faster of them started out with a 36.9 and on his sixth run got it down to a 36.1. I started with two over 40 then reduced each run until I got it down to nip them at the end with a 35.773. Its lots more fun when you have d mod competition! Yep...having fun!
DaveD Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 How about "very fast car, very slow driver!";) Tom, Sounds to me like "SUPERCAR and Not So Bad Driver". That's a great accomplishment with just a few runs on a new to you car!!! Congrats. Dave
t walgamuth Posted May 16, 2015 Author Posted May 16, 2015 Thanks very much! Today went to a test and tune and got in about 20 runs. A very fast Lotus Elan D mod car was there and schooled me. I got a lot of practice in in the new car though and am gaining competence in driving it. I am pushing harder now and managed to spin out twice without knocking any cones over (not as if I really had anything to do with not knocking over cones). Started left foot braking too. That seems to be working well.
