So how is the fun in Noo Joisey? Well we missed out on karting. Quite a few of us got quite wet.

 

Everything started off great. The beers in the pits were being opened. People were arriving. So far so good.

 

Then some rain arrived with a bit of thunder. So we locked the cars down and headed for the bar as no karting was ever going to happen in that weather. But then the weather turned real nasty. Biblical rain, high winds, thunder and lightning. Flooding in Millville. Seb was putting his car in the garage and both of us were quite alarmed at the clouds roiling around above us. So much so we contemplated our options for taking cover. The 20x20 tent outside the garage for Saturday's lunch was partially airborne and would have been if it were not for the fence it was attached to.

 

But everything settled down for dinner. The drinks flowed. The jokes and laughter started. The fun began. And we will just have to find another time for the karting to take place.

 

Last night I slept with six sevens. I think I pickup 2 more cars to store Saturday night.

One thing I learned last night - do not open an 18 foot high garage door with bright lights on for Roman to change wheels over. One, you get attacked by all the frogs looking to mate after the rain and two, every frigging insect comes calling to buzz the lights. It took me forever to kill enough bugs to get a quiet sleep.

So we survived Saturday. Weather was perfect - sunny, not a cloud in the sky. Track was perfect - washed clean, grippy. What could possibly go wrong?

 

Well....it certainly tested a LOT of cars. The mechanical roll call:

 

- A fair amount of carburetor tuning took place

- Fred lost a cycle wing on the back straight

- Paul has cracked two steering rods

- Steve probably punctured a left front tire - no hiss but it won't hold the air.

- Jim had coolant burping issues and quite possibly has a small head gasket issue evidenced by soot in the overflow container.

- Then there was Jeff - first lap of the first session the brakes head to the floor. Turns out it the front hubs had cracked and destroyed the bearings under it and lost a spacer in the process. So Terry who fitted out my garage took off to track down a 1966 Spitfire hub in Millville. But that failed so he then took Tom's garage door remote and went for a 3 hour drive to pick up some spares in Tom's garage. Jeff was back on track for the last session of the day!

 

There were probably other sagas going on that I missed but hey, that was half the fun!

Todd's S3 that he vintages races. He was fastest driver of the day. Absolutely blitzing everyone - even Seb with his 60hp advantage. The two had great fun playing tag around the track. Seb was eagerly learning the techniques so that he can keep ahead of Simon (his usual track tag buddy) who could not make it.

 

 

Lunch was at the condo garages with 3 units open for checking out - mine, Jerry's and the for sale unit where the buffet line was set up. Since everyone got photos of mine that will turn up on here, I will say that Jerry's had the more expensive fitout by a huge number. That wall is entirely a mural - a 50 foot by 20 foot mural on that wall. All the other sides were also using the same vintage brick mural wallpaper.

Don's BBQ on the lawn on the river was just perfect. Right temp. perfect sunset. Absolutely great food by Chef Murray. A fitting end to a great day.

hey guys! it was GREAT meeting everyone! I'm bummed that I'm currently typing this on a sunday morning and knowing that all the rest of my Sevens buddies are circulating around at NJMP (alas I was only able to schedule free one day off on Sat). we had an absolutely perfect day at the track -- a little warm but not too hot. sunny and dry and track was very fast! oh and it was very kind to say that I was fastest -- but i was def NOT fastest by the end of the day -- Seb was KILLING it by the end (he was down into the low 1:13s by the end of the day; that's 2 secs faster than I've ever gone in my car!) - he definitely learns quickly and has picked up on some of my speed secrets! that last session I was trying HARD to keep with him (I was driving full race pace when not in traffic, which, by the way, was VERY friendly and courteous to Seb and myself -- they were signaling and letting us by everywhere!) and he just gradually pulled away -- bye bye Seb!!!

 

it was so neat to be on a track populated exclusively by other Sevens -- I've never been on track even at a large vintage race with more than about three or four (the Jefferson 500 vintage races). 20+ was a TREAT!!!!!!! (can't wait to see that pic of us all lined up on the front straight btw!!!).

 

although there were a few maintenance issues (not too bad, considering really!) most everyone seemed to be smiles most all of the day. my little crossflow powered unit ran like a top; all I did was add gas and go! didn't even burn any oil all day long or require anything really. they are such good cars

 

was just a wonderful day and I'm so glad to have participated, and wanted to thank Tom and Croc and Seb and just everyone else; can't wait to do it again soon!!!!

PS if anyone would care to go to the track and do some private coaching -- I'm your man! very few of us pro coaches have experience in a Seven, and it's certainly a different kind of animal, compared to a 911 or Z06 or M3 etc etc. (a better more fun often faster animal!!!). I am frequently (3-4 times a month) at various local tracks: NJMP, Summit Point, Watkins Glen, VIR, Limerock, Pocono.

So its Monday morning. My little Roombas are hard at work downstairs cleaning up the garage while I get going. A good number of people left last night and the rest will be gone, including me this morning.

 

It was a fantastic weekend. I am tired, quite sore in some places, a little sunburned but very happy. Sunday dawned overcast and unfortunately it started to rain around 7 but that stopped around 9 and the first few sessions dried the track off for us so it was pretty much dry for our first session of 10am. And it stayed dry all day. It was a perfect driving weekend.

 

The mechanical fun continued on Sunday:

- Paul got his steering rod brackets welded up by TJ a local race mechanic who looks after Jeff and my cars. So he was back in business.

- TJ also sourced a bolt for Tom C who need one for his steering.

- Norm started having electrical problems and coasted into the pits once and was towed in once.

- Jim had a rear bearing go and despite having TJ and his assistant, Ian, work away at the problem, defeat was admitted.

- DaveH and son Ryan developed a oil pan weep which they dealt with my putting the trusty Zetec Depends diaper on and continuing to run.

- MichaelD was having gear selection issues.

 

Somehow we all kept it together for most of the day!

 

Drivers briefing was very entertaining. Fred's missing cycle wing was returned to him along with MichaelD's number plate. The story finally came out. Fred lost his cycle wing on the back straight. MichaelD was following and in trying to avoid Fred's wing managed to aim to hit it dead center tearing off his front number plate.

 

Also in the last session on Saturday, something brown and vaguely furry appeared on the exit of the bowl. I thought it was a sock. Others thought it was dead animal. Story came out last night at dinner - it was Norm's rag pile that fell off his car.

 

Driving standard was very high. At least until the 3rd session on Sunday when all hell broke loose. I come around turn 1 to find debris flags and a rock/boulder on the track between turn 1 and 2. WTF? Turns out Kitcat (figures eh?) had been "landscaping" with an off track excursion. The I come around to turn 7 and after exiting I discover rutted grass, dirt, earth moving activities. Turns out Ryan had a big moment, luckily recorded on video and happily shared at dinner with everyone by DaveH, his father.

Stewart turned up with Colleen and the kids for a visit. Despite wheeling in to lunch in a wheelchair, he was showing off his rehab progress in the pits by demonstrating how he can stand for short periods as he works his way back from his paragliding crash. Inspirational stuff. He has not sold his seven and is using it as his goal to get driving again. I bet he will make it too.

The "prestigious" award ceremony to highlight the good natured fun we all had was the end of the evening. Someone else will have the photos of that to post I hope!

 

Mechanical Sympathy Award: 3/4s of the group could have qualified for this. Even DaveD made a late effort at winning when he demonstrated gorilla strength to snap his gear level in half. But the worthy winner was Norm. Only one to be towed back to the pits with electrical gremlins.

 

Greenpeace Award for Gas Guzzling: Normally v8 Storkers are the winners of this with their horrific fuel consumption of 3 mpg on track. However TomC wins this one for his 1900 mile one way drive from Eagle CO to Millville NJ. We love having you Tom!

 

Golden Skidmarks Award: Ryan for his tearing up the grass just after turn 7

 

Gorgeous Car Pity About the Driver Award (a female beauty pageant trophy): This went to Dan3030 as he came and showed off his new (to him) Westfield Miata. A great addition to the group!

 

Polisher Award: This valuable trophy was a steering wheel cover in baby poo brown faux polyester fur. Naturally this went to Roman who 'made me' help him chamois his car off after it got wet Friday night.

 

Best Directions in a Moving Vehicle: This is an Oscar like trophy which went to Scott L for staying out of trouble, being fast and having no issues all weekend! Good guys win!

 

I Can Steer Award: This had to go to Paul as after 2 years as our track photographer visitor he finally was persuaded to bring his Birkin out on track. So starting ear;ly this year he did a whole bunch of introductory track days and worked his way up into the solo intermediate group. He looked good on track and had good speed all weekend.

 

 

 

 

I do want to say thank you to everyone for coming and enjoying the good time.

 

To respond to some earlier comments:

Todd - we would love to see you back. I know Seb very much valued your input to refining his driving technique and lines around NJMP. Seb had 60hp on you so he should have been quicker!

Jay - Top photos! I hope you enjoyed the visit and we loved having you. I hope it helped you get a better sense of the cars and their various specs/options/etc so that you are an informed purchaser as you go car hunting. I think you got a good sense of the amazing things these little cars can do.

Wemtd/Paul - great to see you out there on track enjoying things!

 

 

 

 

I do want to say thanks to Tom as my partner in crime for helping to make this all happen. He registered 20,000 steps on Saturday on his pedometer. I believe I probably did the same looking at my swollen sore feet this morning. I also want to thank Don Fauerbach and Carolyn Watson, without whom we would not be running under the kind invitation of NJMP Drivers Club. They allow us the privilege of having our own run group with catered hot breakfast, delicious lunches and refreshments all day. We are so spoiled and I am very grateful for them.

 

I also need to say thank you to TJ and Ian and TJ's father Terry, who saved more than one person this weekend with their mechanical issues.

I got home a few hours ago and as Mike said it was a great weekend. It was great to be out there with a bunch of other 7s and to socialize with a bunch of really nice people. I want to thank Croc for his amazing attention to detail in pulling this off. He was blindsided with the news that the lunch on Saturday was going to be held outside of his garage for the entire 80 -100 members who attended the trackday. But in spite of that curve, the event was surprisingly relaxed this year, and we felt that we did get to spend some quality time with everyone between sessions and each evening.

 

The weekend started out tough with some torrential rains that flooded the paddock and local roads on Friday afternoon and forced the cancellation of the Karting death race. But the amazing thing is that the cold front came thru and the temps and the humidity dropped, and the track and paddock were completely dry by the morning.

 

As Mike said, the mechanical issues really made for some interesting paddock time. Jeff started it off with toasting two front hubs. Then Norman had an electrical issue, Dave H and son were re jetting their weber carbs, and that was just in the morning on Saturday.

 

The good news was that all those issues were resolved and only limited track time was missed. By the end of the day on Saturday there were more issues but once again, repairs were made and all but one car made it back on track, and that one had a shot to get back on, but even a 12 ton press couldn't free the bearing from the half shaft.

 

I've never seen someone weld a repair to a suspension/steering part and take it out on track within an hour or so of the repair being done. Amazing stuff. We have a lot of talent in our group and some of them can even drive. :jester:

 

Our First timers, Dan, Matt and Todd were great additions to the group both in driving talent and socially. Hopefully we will see them again next year.

 

I have some pictures to post, and some video to edit and I hope to get to that tomorrow.

 

Thanks again to all who came out and made the event such a fun time. We really enjoy the company of everyone of you that attended. The track time is fun but the social banter is priceless.

 

Those who attended heard that The NJMP staff extended the invitation to us to return again next year. So there is now 12 months left to get your cars sorted, save up for your hotel rooms, bar bills, gas and toll money. Next year I predict we should exceed twenty Seven's at our growing gathering! I'll add my thanks to Mike & Tom for pulling this off again. In spite of not running all Sunday with the frozen wheel bearing from Hell, still had a great time with the gang. Fantastic food all weekend. Nice to meet some different people from last year. Now I actually know who Kitcat is! Thanks to all for help with the bearing especially Roman and TJ. Oh and the burping antifreeze as well (at least it looks like we solved that one!) Great to see Stewart on Sunday- Keep going with that rehab and hope you'll be back next year in your 7!

 

Off to the machine shop with the driveshaft to see if they can get the bearing off (well....after I can figure out where to obtain the bearing and seal from) We'll see if a little heat can help out. Might as well do the other side at the same time.
