Getting My 7 Tomorrow!

Lucky-7

Recommended Posts

Well I ran into an issue with my car. I put on about 85 miles so far and while washing it yesterday I notice a tiny dimple on the nose cone. It was coming from the inside out! So I pulled out in the shop and removed the hood. I peeked under the nose cone and it appears the nut on the top of the radiator has been rubbing on the nose cone. That's not good for either part.

I pulled the nose off and tried to adjust the radiator more toward the passenger side. The mounting flanges on the rad have slots in them, so I moved the rad as far as I could...about a 1/2", but that wasn't going to do it. It's still dangerously close.

I wound up drilling new holes just above the slots on the radiator flanges and lowered the rad about 3/8" on the drivers side. That did the trick. I couldn't lower the passenger side because the lower radiator hose would be dangerously close to hitting the frame.

All is well...for now.:)

How was the trip to NJMP? Got any pics up yet?

Kenny - Glad to see you got your car registered and on the road. I'm sure there's always minor adjustments to be made on a low-volume hand built car, but I'm sure it's disappointing if the damage is noticeable. When I built my Birkin there were always little things that required attention that you'd never see in a normal production vehicle. Thanks for the update, it'll be one more thing for me to check out when I start my build!

How do you like driving it so far?

It's barely noticeable and seems to be going away now that the pressure is off of it. Or it's just wishful thinking... LOL. I'll get a pic.

Love it! My wife and I just went for a nice tour. About 60 miles. Wellsboro to a little town called Slate Run. Great restaurant there over looks Pine Creek. Route 414. Beautiful twisty run that follows Pine Creek from the Wellsboro area down to Jersey Shore, PA. Slate Run is not quite halfway.

Puma shoes are working fantastic. No more aggravation with the pedals.

Noticed a small clunk you hit the throttle, in gear, after coasting a lit. Sounds like suspension clunk. Comes after a glide then hitting the throttle.

I'll get it on the lift and check her over. If anyone has any thoughts please chime in.

Thanks!

Happy Motoring

Well... Time for an update. After a very frustrating month and a half, I finally got my plate, title and registration. I was denied the first time around because of "no license plate frame" Really? Perhaps if I had a plate I would put it in a frame! Also they circled the exhaust pipe in between the muffler and the cat, along with our super cool exhaust headers that feed into the collector on the cat. They said that they need to be "shielded" WTF.

Soooo of to Lowes to get some 6" aluminum corrugated ducting and this is what I came up with.

Is any of this cited in law or is bubba the inspector free to call the shots as he sees fit? Did you read the motor vehicle requirements for your state beforehand?

Glad you're enjoying the ride!

As far as the clunk, you might want to check out the rear differential too. I did a quick google search: https://www.google.com/search?q=caterham+differential+noise&rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS838US838&oq=caterham+differential+noise&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i64.6050j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&safe=active&ssui=on

I'm assuming you have the BMW diff?

The laws are very vague. The inspector that certified it never even questioned it. All the paperwork was filed and sent to the state. Apparently it landed on the desk of someone who must have been having a bad hair day. The state is the one who interpreted the law their own way.

Over and done with, i found my own way of dealing with them.

Score one for the good guys!

Yes it's the BMW. I wrote to Caterham about it but they were no help. They told me it was because of the limited slip diff.... I don't have a limited slip diff. You can imagine what i thought about that...

Anyway, i rechecked the suspension in the rear, Checked the trans mount, prop shaft, DeDion tube, sway bar, re-tighened the big nuts on the rear axle, diff mounts, etc. One thing I did notice was the trunk floor was resting on the top of, or within thousandths, of the diff. I managed to pry the floor up and put a piece of rubber in between as an insulator.

Haven't driven it yet so we'll see if anything I did helped.

We're taking the Caterham to Watkins Glen for the Vintage Festival on the Friday after Labor Day. http://www.grandprixfestival.com

We'll spend the whole weekend there. Hopefully some of you might make it. We usually hang at the Seneca Lodge for drinks and dinner, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

We go every year, it's a great time.

We'll be doing a tour of the 6.6 mile original "Old Course" with the "Lotus Owners of N.Y. / LOONY's" should be a blast!

Whilemy dealer was in England visiting the factory he brought me back some stripes!

Let mestart from the beginning. When I ordered the car, I figured I would be able toget a stripe kit here in the states and save myself a few bucks. Well after Iordered it, I searched for some stripe kits that I would like or some type ofvinyl wrap. That search was a waste of time and the more I saw the factory onesthe more I liked them.

Iwrote to the dealer and told him to add on the stripe kit. He tried to get iton the order but when the car got here there were no stripes on it.

Whenhe delivered it he realized it and said he would get a kit coming. When thestripe kit it was only for the sides of the car and no hood stripes.

Asdisappointed as I was, I soldiered on and kept going on with the build. I askedhim to get me the hood stripes once again and he said they would be in ashipment that he was receiving back in Dec. of '19. I contacted him once againand he told me in January that they weren't in the container.

Hereplied that he was going to England in early March and he would personallypick them and get them to me. I'm thinking SURE HE WILL!!!!

Well, much to my surprise when he sent me the pics that I posted here of the factoryand showroom he said my stripes were in the mail!!! Just like the check is inthe mail???

Thatwas on a Saturday and Monday I got them! FINALLY!!!!!

Hereis the best part..... I wrote to him to tell him that I received them and tothank him, I asked "What do I owe you for the stripes?". He replied,"I screwed up on them from the beginning so they're on me." I wasfloored, never expected that! Its almost a $300 option! To thank him, I'm goingto send him some stuff I bought from Snap On for my customers and give it tohim for his showroom.

ThanksRick!!!!

TodayI had a chance to install the ones on the hood. I still have to do the ones onthe back, but take a look and let me know what you think...
