PalaceOfFun
Greetings all, I just bought a Birkin built around 2010 by Texas Motor Works. It has a Duratec and a type 9 trans with close ratio gears. The transmission needs refreshing which I am happy to perform myself, but I wonder what the best source of parts is. Should I call TMW and buy from them, assuming they even sell trans parts? Or is there a 3rd party that makes/sells the gears and such for the trans that TMW sold with the car? In case it might matter, I am in southern California. Thank you for any advice. Regards, Robert Edited March 29, 2019 by PalaceOfFun typo
Croc
British American Transfer (BAT) in FL usually has all those parts imported from the UK. THe T9 was used in the Ford Merkur here. Assuming you are not touching the non-standard(?) close ratio gearsets you may have then this should work. http://www.batinc.net/merkur.htm If you are thinking upgrading internals, ratios, etc then look at Burton Power in the UK (great catalog to print out and browse) https://www.burtonpower.com/parts-by-fitment-type/parts-by-gearbox-all/ford-type-9-gearbox.html Tracsport offer upgraded T9 bits and ratios for motorsport applications. Depends on what you want to upgrade. They are very familiar with Caterhams so will know your Birkin needs well. https://www.tracsport.com/ If you want pure transmission specialists then Quantum Mechanics in the UK know their stuff and have rebuild kits plus ratio options and upgrades. http://www.quantumechanics.com/ UK contacts are happy to deal with us in the US. Just call them early morning our time to catch them with the time difference. Edited March 29, 2019 by Croc
11Budlite
Just to add to what Mike said: Quantum Mechanics is actually located in CT not too far from my house. I bought the T9 kit for my '64 MGB from John. I also had good luck with BGH in the UK when I put a "2.8 Sporting Close" gearkit in my old Birkin with a T9. Nicest transmission I've ever used. JeffersonRaley
I don't recommend buying from TMW. I've had pretty terrible experiences with them.
papak
I would second the recommendation for John at Quantum. Great guy, a straight shooter.

simon450
I have a BGH gearbox in my Caterham, which I’ve tracked enthusiastically for the last 3 years and it’s been great. They have their own alumminium (spelt correctly) casings, which are a nice upgrade to the standard box. Highly recommend Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Kitcat
What JeffersonRaley said: there is a reason TMW is no longer Birkin's USA distributor (IMHO, as the purchaser of an '09 Birkin assembled by TMW, and as other TMW purchasers on this Forum have reported). xcarguy
I don't recommend buying from TMW. I've had pretty terrible experiences with them. Ditto. Several here who have had a ‘less than stellar ‘ experience with TMW.
