coffee break Posted May 21, 2019 Share Posted May 21, 2019 I made an recon trip to http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=15381&stc=1in my Miata to see what it was like and what I need to take into account to do it in my 7. It took 3.5 hours to get there. It was last Friday and I got there half past noon. There was lots of activity but not completely jammed up. On my run going north I had a clear path, but on the return I found some slow ones. I used the pull-offs to wait but caught them again. After the third pull-off a highspeed train came thru ( 3 bikes followed 6 quick moving sporty cars) and I followed them. The slow moving Tesla Series 3 used a pull-off to let the train blow thru. http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=15382&stc=1 I got caught in some rain on my return trip. I think that event set the record for the highest number of se7ens in any one spot in the U.S. to date. As I recall we had around 50 7's of every stripe and mfg. Not sure who else is still around who may have attended. All of the nearby roads, not just the Tail, were awesome. And I never saw a cop car.Zoom, zoom. After photo was over everyone left but me. I had an mysterious electrical short that grounded me (pun intended) for an hour.I barely made it to the banquet 1-2 hours later, after the car spontaneously healed itself, independent of my futile efforts to problem solve it. The 2007 car was a crossflow Caterham classic - nicknamed the "Blue Enema" because he would be that far up your a** on track. He had a red Birkin for a while that set records for spins in a single day on track (you are a rookie by comparison). Then he bought his current ex-24 hour race car which he managed to break .... Dodge me? The world's slowest spin by me - it was like turning a cargo ship but still Kitcat locked up in a straight line, dinner plate eyes and a prominent ridge in his carbon fiber seat from his butt clench while not even trying to turn the steering wheel! :rofl: Edited May 21, 2019 by Croc Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Croc: When your behemoth decided enough was enough and it just wasn't going to turn, and so signaled by starting a lurid, slow-motion slide in protest of your abuse, I was frozen: time stood still, my life passed before me..... I tried to remember where I'd put my will and if I had thought to kiss my wife good bye the day before:). It was esp thrilling since I had no earthly idea where your car was going next: would it veer back on track and wipe me out, would it put a wheel off and roll, would it ever stop, in my ever shortening lifetime? Nothing was obvious, so the term "panic stop" took on new meaning for me (as did flat-spotted tires). And in the process, another great memory was made:)! It happened to be late at night and I was solo on a twisty road with no service after already putting on ~2600 miles. I didn't push it but I certainly enjoyed it http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=15392&stc=1 Second time was in a Nissan Versa (6spd) out of all things. Friend had a wedding in Asheville and it was one of those "when in town..." scenarios. The last space shuttle was taking off (Atlantis in 2011 - STS135) so I packed up and took off with only that mission in mind. I've never left North East prior to that. It was well worth it http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=15394&stc=1 After that I thought to myself "I'm already here, when's the next time I'll be this close to Miami to check it out?" A few hours later when I'm in Miami I had a thought "I'm already here, when's the next time I'll be this close to Key West check it out" After many hours of riding and enjoying Key West catch of the day I started my voyage back. Naturally since I was in a near vicinity of Tail of the Dragon I had a though "It's not too far away, when's the next time I'll have a chance to ride it?" So naturally I took that detour.
