The dark reality of having small, hard to see, safety less little light cars without crumple zones.

I'm still fairly certain the 7 is safer than a motorcycle but between my vehicles of a CRX/Miata and the 7, I do feel a lot more comfortable safety wise in the Volvo vs the tin boxes around all the trucks and SUV's.

The article says the driver of the 7 lost control and had spun backwards into the oncoming lanebefore hitting the Polo.  The passenger in the 7 died and the driver is in an induced coma.

The cockpit is ok so I'm guessing not enough safeties being used, whatever they were. Can't see any harness at all in the pics so who knows. Most race cars I race in these days have the halo type seat to stop side-to-side whiplash, not to the level of nascar but enough to stop your head flying off. In fact it happened to a teammate last weekend at Road America, brakes failed and he sideswiped the car in front and wrote off both cars. He got out without any bruise or injury at all (except mentally of course). They always say spend as much on safety as you do on the car, they are not wrong. I've got a fuel cell coming next week and I'm looking for a halo seat to replace the tillet that'll fit the space. Turn 12 at Road Atlanta was the last straw for me a few weeks ago for me, way too dangerous not to have side impact protection.

Looks like a straight road, but wet. Its tires look new.

I agree with SF4018, perhaps the belts weren't being used as the cockpit structure looks pretty intact.

The Polo driver apparently is ok. It was clearly a huge impact, the Polo shows at least as much damage as the Caterham. And I think I'd prefer a rear impact to a front impact. So the drastic results for the Caterham occupants are a a mystery
