What does the car future hold and the direction we are heading in.

Just saw BMW announce the all new G70 (7 series SUV)

 

It is... different.

 

I feel like we are at the very beginning point of crossing over into what we all thought future cars would look like but actually in practice. As I see these cars I think of iRobot car. Most have Siri type talking to capability. They are all screens. Self driving is more and more advanced.

We know that the future is heading in the electric direction overall.

 

 

So here is the question. Lets imagine it's 2050 (feel old yet?) what does the average car on the road look like?

 

Is it anything we actually want to drive or is it actually futuristic and is awesome and can get us from point A to B while we read a newspaper?

 

What's going on with our 7's? How expensive is the gas? Are parts still available for us to work on our dinosaurs?

 

New generation (Zoomers are now parents!) thinks of gasoline cars as ancient as carburetors. Carburetors in general is a foreign concept similar to lighting fire with sticks, only people that do it are "purists" as there is no need for using the primitive technology when things like lighters (even those are electric now) exist.

The 7 series is the high end luxury sedan.  It is not an SUV.  The SUV models have an X prefix, such as X7.

 

Even so it is a polarizing design.  Not sure if I like it.....

I own a Chevy truck and GM sent a survey. They want to know if I would consider an electric pickup if it went 300 miles between charges and there were plenty of places to charge the truck in half an hour. The truck performance was 0 to 60 in 5 seconds. I said no and the next question was would you consider an electric truck if it had lots of modern tech gadgets. I said no and that was the end of the survey that was supposed to take 15 minutes.  I guess it is clear where GM is going.

 I am 80. And was looking for my last auto. Looked at a porch macan and liked it, but the reliability was horrible. So next- electric and came to the conclusion that only a hybrid with a 50 mile range before the engine was needed and home solar charging capability would work for touring the country without hassles.  So found a 94 ford conversion van with the 5.0 and 80k on the clock.  room- about 20mpg with good tune- decent handling with good shocks,tires,and sway bars. residual life longer than a new porch or many other new cars for that matter.  my house is nearly "green", I can afford the gas, and the electric option is not viable, nor will it be in my life time of driving.  My 7 , glass buggy with a turbo 2010 VW and a 66 Ranchero with a 408 Windsor provide the excitement.  Am a techie, but simple is more likely to save you from walking.  And when the unavoidable war with china= no chips/no drive- in addition to the short usable lifespan that we now have.  If in my life span there is a viable made in USA electric car there will be one in my garage.       john  "part of aging is narrowing of the mind".

I'm 77 and have owned 386 cars and pickups and 16 motorcycles over the years and there will NEVER be an electric or hybrid vehicle in my garage so I'm not concerned about future vehicles as they displace the ICE.  I don't have much future left but I intend owing a few more interesting ICE cars before I leave this earth. 

 

I loved the Caterham SV I built and owned for 11 years.  Second longest time I have owned a car.  The lifespan of car ownership for me is usually measured in months, not years.  I currently own a 2019 Miata 30AE, 2021 Honda Accord Sport and a 2021 C8 Corvette.  I'm on three waiting lists for a Z06 which I hope to obtain in a year or less. I'm also on the waiting list for a 2023 Honda Civic SE which only comes with a manual transmission.  When it comes the Accord Sport which only comes with a 10 speed torque converter type automatic will move on to a new owner.

 

Its unlikely I will own a project car at this stage of my life.
