7 S4 Air Filter

Recommended Posts

I’m on the hunt for an air filter for my S4. It’s a BV TC running Dellorto DHLA carbs.

I’ve been unsuccessful finding a replacement, and thought it was a K&N based on the sticker, but no joy there.

The assembly covers both carbs showing measurements, and installed on the car. I don’t want to cut into the Bonnet.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've never seen the pleated style that covers both carbs, so can't help with a direct replacement. However, if no one recognizes it and you are open to similar filters that use one per carb, both the Dellorto Shop and Redline have some options that should work:

Another, albeit more modern looking option, is the ITG JC40/25.  It's the same height as your current filter, about 1/2" longer and 1" wider.  They also do a sausage version in that size (JC40S/25) and sell blank baseplates that you can drill to fit:  https://www.itgairfilters.com/products/jc40-small-twin-carburettor-filter-black-framed

Thanks for your feedback and insight @JohnCh, I agree the others may work out. I’ll also look at the ITG. I was hoping someone would recognize it.

part of the issue may be the car was originally made in NZ (Steel Bro) so it might have been a somewhat custom part. Thanks again

Looking at the pleating, it certainly appears to be a K&N filter, have you thought to send  pictures of the filter  (pull it out of the car, lay it out flat and take shots showing the dimensions and the general overall filter itself)  to K&N's tech support division?

@JohnChthanks for the recommendation to the OZ Club, I’ve also found the NZ Club, so maybe one of the will recognize it. @mrmustang the KN Tech was my first try. I agree it certainly looks like a KN filter, but they didn’t have any details. I never thought it would be a challenge finding a filter, but worst case I’ll install a couple of low profile KN. Thanks both for your help.

K&N offered a huge variety of filters at the beginning but have narrowed it down greatly. You could fit a round filter that is about 13-14 inches x 2 inches and bend it to fit the assembly.

I don't know why you need to replace what you have. The  filter can be straighten and sealed if there are any damaged areas. It is just window screen and cotton gauze.

Short of adapting a round filter, you might as well add individual assemblies that are common and come in different heights.

@MV8thanks for your thoughts. I may try to repurpose a round and see what luck I have shaping a filter. I’m also going try and straighten and reseal where needed as you recommended. I was a little concerned with the bent areas, but overall the other side is much better.

You've probably heard this before but you are likely giving up some performance with an air cleaner that shallow. There can't be much in the way of velocity stacks under there, and what stacks there are will be very close to the outer cover. I'd be tempted to find a domed unit that would allow air in over a larger surface area, particularly directly in front of the carb throats.

@wdb, that’s an interesting thought. The S4 manual show a box type unit, but with an air inlet in the front of the unit, which is different than the pancake style installed. I need to see how much space exists between the filter and Bonnet to see what I can fit. Thanks for your insight.

This is also how Lotus did it in the Elan.  It wouldn't surprise me if the parts are the same to save money.  There are a few people here with Elans that might be able to take measurements for you. I'm happy to measure mine, but my Elan is a Stromberg car, which may have different dimensions than the DCOE airbox.
