The recent California fires took a fellow 7 owners home and car.  He recently posted the following:

 

“Like many I lost my home and stuff in Topanga to the fire on 1/7 

Offering this to my VARA family, hopefully this is worth something to someone
It was a 1962 Lotus 7 series 2, # 1636

1600 ford motor .040 over, lightened and balanced with an Ivy head

Never installed correct series 2 rear fenders and clamshell fronts.  Original side curtains

Please make me an offer and it haul away“

My condolences. I'm sure it would have blown if the tank or cap had been aluminum. All the ferrous metal and drivetrain are reusable with a little work. I would have made an offer but it was sold before I saw it. Depending on how it is filed with insurance may determine if the vin is still good. I don't know the rules out there.

Seeing as it was hot enough to melt all the aluminum (even those nice Cosmic wheels :classic_sad:), I was wondering if the brazed frame joints would be compromised in any way that wouldn't be obvious from a visual inspection. Thoughts?

I'll be curious to see what is left of the frame after an acid dip and wash to neutralize the corrosion both inside and out. Forget about brazing the melted welds, I'm actually more concerned how brittle the frame has become since the fire was hot enough to melt the aluminum body panels. I suspect the VIN, if not marked in the California DMV/MVS as salvage, might end up on a donor chassis for it's phoenix like rise from the ashes.

Aluminum puddles at a much lower temp than steel, which is probably low carbon. Very much like what's left of a small plane after a crash.
