Detroiter Posted March 1 Posted March 1 Looking to install 4pt harnesses and wondering if there are any recommendations? I can find loads online but worried about length issues (if if they are too long can the adjust easy or does straps flap around in the wind). Hoping to know what people are using

I can find loads online but worried about length issues (if if they are too long can the adjust easy or does straps flap around in the wind). Hoping to know what people are using I plan to upgrade from my standard 3 point to the Caterham 4 point I got from Rocky Mountain Caterham. Did this in my 2014 Caterham without any issues. No flapping in the wind, if they did, they make strap holders for this.
JohnCh Posted March 1 Posted March 1 Although expensive, I'm a fan of the Schroth Profi II with ASM. A danger of running a standard 4-point is that in a collision, the lap belt rides up the abdomen and can crush internal organs. Mounting the lap belt at the correct angle and using a crotch strap (5 or 6 point) keeps the lap belt in the correct position at the pelvis and minimizes this type of trauma. Schroth is the exception. Their ASM technology has a stitched fold on the inside shoulder belt that breaks in a collision, instantly lengthening that side and causing the lower body to slightly rotate. That rotation ensures the pelvis catches on top of the lap belt and prevents the belt from riding up to the soft tissue. They have crash test dummy videos that illustrate the difference. The Schroths also have a lot of flexibility in mounting; you can configure the lap belts as pull-up, or pull-down, or some combination, and there is also a decent amount of flexibility when placing the adjusting buckle location on the lap belt. This comes in handy if using one-piece seats like Tillets where the lap belt must thread through a hole in the side of the seat. I have them in the Caterham, Westfield, and Miata. No issues with fit in any of them. 3
bball7754 Posted March 1 Posted March 1 Agree with John. I have Schroth 6 point drivers side, and the ASM for the passenger. They both are pull-up for the lap belts.
Vovchandr Posted March 1 Posted March 1 Options are limited if you want to be FIA In date for track days and dont like yellow. If you don't care for date this guy has been trying to get rid of his expired OEM for sometime in NH
CBuff Posted March 1 Posted March 1 Agree with John. I installed the Schroth profi ii. https://www.schrothracing.com/item/profi-ii-asm/fia-4-point-asm I thought I would use them as 4 pts on the road but have the crutch 6pt for track. But I run with the 6pts all the time. Don’t love the yellow tags. So I got the harness pads that are black with grey tags that match my car. Precious I know. they are a bit pricey but well made You can take the pads off and even the 3” shoulders work with Han’s.
JohnCh Posted March 1 Posted March 1 @CBuff I rotated your last photo. If you intended it to be upside down to highlight the effectiveness of the Schroths, please let me know and I'll return it to the original orientation 1 1 2
Christopher smith Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Being involved in racing for decades I got the impression that 5 point and 6 point harnesses were the way to go even before they were required since they keep the belt from riding up and also prevent "submarining" in a serious shunt if the seating position is laid back. Driving our small cars on the street may be less dangerous than on the track but competing with trucks and giant SUVs with stupid drivers doesn't seem all that safe either. Maybe keep that anti-submarine belt buckled. Also, I thought the early nylon webbing was more of a problem with UV degradation. Maybe not now so much? A street driven car that is usually in a garage may not get that much UV?
jbcollier Posted March 2 Posted March 2 +204, do not use 4 point belts. People have been killed using them. 1
Vovchandr Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Just so we are all on the same page many 4 points have the extra one or two points that can be added, a la, Caterham On the street I never use the 6pts
jbcollier Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Then use a three point on the street where it far more likely to have a front collision. There aren't buildings, poles, curbs, trees, or nuts coming at you on the track.
Christopher smith Posted March 2 Posted March 2 I like the five and six point for all uses. It just gives me a much more secure feeling
JohnCh Posted March 2 Posted March 2 @Vovchandr the point many of us are making is not that 4-points can't also accommodate a sub belt, but that being in a collision with only the lap and shoulder belts attached isn't as safe as it appears. This very old Schroth video uses crash test dummies to illustrate the difference between normal 4-points and 4-points with ASM, which more closely mirror the effect of using sub belts. 1
