The production run is limited so not enough for Ford and Caterham. The per unit engine cost is roughly double a 620R Duratec unit set up (incl. the roots supercharger). Obviously this comparison is flawed as it does not cost in changeover in ancillaries and installation elements needed if you were to productionize the engine in situ in a Caterham - so cost differential would be higher in reality. The 2L Duratec with supercharger is slightly heavier but it can reliably produce 350hp at 8000rpm in a track setting (when using the Partridge Green Motorsport modification package that unlocks the Caterham ECU and fixes the TPS and other design issues unaddressed by Caterham). A lot of work - the current Millington engine is a LONG way from being a YB Cosworth engine. The Millington engine is designed for competition so it has a refresh life that is shorter than what is accepted for road going production cars. I thought long and hard about using one in a Caterham and visited Millington twice. Its a tall engine - using one in a Caterham SV was always going to be a challenge. Weight is about the same as an equivalent Duratec package. Refreshes would have needed to send the engine back to the UK - something that is fraught given EPA restrictions on engine imports for cars. 3
CarlB Posted January 4 Posted January 4 If you want to see a domestic engine that could make similar power, look at the Polaris Slingshot engine. It has 3.5 inch bore and would be capable of the engine speeds in a racing application. I might suggest a slower speed for something on the street.
