STIMULUS PLAN: WHO WOULD GET WHAT

How proposed rebates could affect certain taxpayers, according to a statement from House Republican leader John Boehner:

A parent with two children: A man worked part of the year, earning $9,000. He has custody of two children. He owed no federal income taxes for 2007. He would be eligible for a base rebate of $300 for himself because his earned income was at least $3,000. He would also qualify for a $300 children's bonus for each of his two kids.

Rebate: $900

A couple with two children: Both worked part-time in 2007 and have two children. After taking available deductions and credits, their federal income tax liability was $500 for 2007. Because their earned income was more than $3,000, they would qualify for the $600 base rebate for a couple. They would also have enough earned income to qualify for a children's bonus of $300 for each of the two children.

Rebate: $1,200

A couple with five children: After taking available credits and deductions, their 2007 taxable income was $95,000, leaving them with a federal income tax liability of just over $16,600. Under the proposal, they would get the full base amount of $1,200. They would also qualify for a children's bonus of $1,500.

Rebate: $2,700

Retired couple: As a result of their investment income, a retired couple paid $4,000 in federal income taxes in 2007. They had no dependent children, so there is no children's bonus.

Rebate: $1,200

A couple with one child: They were able to retire young but still collect dividends and capital gains from a business they sold a few years ago. The couple paid $19,000 in federal income taxes on that income in 2007. They would qualify for the base amount of $1,200. They would also qualify for a children's bonus of $300, because they paid at least $1 of federal income tax in 2007 even though they had no earned income.

Rebate: $1,500

High-income couple with children: Both spouses are lawyers with a combined income in 2007 of $300,000. They have four children. Because their AGI is over $150,000, they are disqualified from receiving either the base amount or the children's bonus.

Rebate: $0

how much of this package will benefit the Chinese economy on its way out of Walmart?

I'm also not fond of the fact that someone who paid $0 in taxes gets a "refund" at my expense

Drug dealers and pimps are going to see a huge boost in biz

Mazda, if you want to know why they get refunds and those with higher income don't, Just do the math. Each vote still counts as one. There are way more at the low end then at the top end.

Based on this data the Bottom 50% of households make less than $30K AGI. Does this give you an idea that most Caterham owners are not going to get a refund. :cuss: :cuss: Tom

Using 2005 IRS adjusted growth income data, check this out:

Top 1% Top 5% Top 10% Top 25% Top 50%

$364,657 $145,283 $103,912 $62,068 $ 30,881

Yeah just wait until the gooberment takes over the Medical services in this country. Then you'll see a real Fubar.

:iagree:

On the positive side, this should really boost the travel industry. We'll be just like Great Britain where the the majority of overseas travel destinations are for medical care.:banghead:

Don't get me started on this....well, I think you just did

Having lived myself in Germany, Switzerland and now for a long time in the US I am still wondering which of these countries has the bigger mess, more corruption, greed and self-serving parties in the health system. Well, thinking about it more I am sure the US beats them all.

Germany has a mixed semi-public/private insurance system but at least mandates any employed worker to be insured. If you are one of the poor souls who is a self-employed minimum wage slave you are still screwed but there are somewhat affordable insurance options. The whole system is of course very inefficient, bureaucratic and a burden for the economy. However, the quality of care ranges from decent to top notch.

Here in the US I am lucky to have an employer with excellent benefits. My own contribution is similar or lower than in Germany but only because the company pays most of the cost (will probably change in the future). However, this "health system" is defying any logic, efficiency, expediency and compassion. That is not just capitalism (I could live with that) but a pathetic combination of collusion, nepotism and a spine-less political class unwilling to fix the issues. The quality of care is accordingly excellent (for the Haves) to minimal (for the Have-Nots).

i agree

Well, that won't be an issue for the US. The folks who can't afford insurance now surely can not go abroad for treatment (well maybe except the Mexicans)

I did not live in a country with a pure public health system. Not sure if I would want to but I have a real hard time to believe it can be any worse than here (for the average person)

As for the stimulus package I agree with Mazda. It is just like Methadone for the Heroine addict. Spend more on credit and sell out the country's assets to China and the Middle East. Maybe we will have American (and European) day laborers standing at the Home depot in Shanghai sometimes.

Worried,

Gert

Lets see, we spent our way into this problem and the answer is to spend our way out of it? We all are going to bite the bullet sooner or later with this mess. Seems no one wants to take financial responsibiity and take the bull by the horns.... It's not as simple as cutting taxes either. It needs a combination of sacrifice. But, oh yeah, it's an election year

Or guitars...

The National health system in the UK offers free health care to all. It's pretty good for emergencies, and used to be good for childbirth, though I hear that is slipping. The real weakness in the system is on-going care or operations for non emergency health issues. As a result, a lot of folks go private - if they can afford it - for operations, as the alternative is a long wait - up to two years in some cases. Several of the private health companies now offer 'opt in' schemes for situations such as this. Most large companies offers workers the option of private health care (at a price), or offer it as a perk. BUPA is the biggest provider - and they are a non-profit, which is what the HMO's should be here IMHO.

The other trend in the UK - as already pointed out - is folks going abroad (Eastern Europe in particular) for operations and, increasingly, dental care!

Having looked at various health care systems around the world, no system will ever satisfy everyone, you just have to find the one that works for the majority. The UK national health system is funded by the taxpayer, which is one of the reasons why gas is now close to $9 a gallon :ack:

That sums it up pretty well.

I'm voting for Ron Paul. Maryland Republicans, don't forget to vote on Tuesday!

Maybe any Se7eners who receive a check this year should pledge to spend it on uprades? :jester:

I'm already spending way more than that on my Se7en this year, way more...

Unfortunately, I'm helping Great Britain's economy more than the USA's. :flag: Ben & Cory only get a relatively small margin on all those expensive Caterham parts.

:7frog:$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
