My 5 mile route to work includes a 3 mile stretch of 1930's parkway, semi tree-lined, slow speed split 4 lane into and thru a city park full of 90 degree turns, off camber S's, a one way down hill road with a panoramic view of the Ohio River with back to back 10-15 mph curves followed by a roundabout (aka "the Skid Pad") which, as suggested by its name, I go round about at least 1x, maybe more depending on traffic. Around 33 degrees when I left the house, but with the addition of the side curtains it certainly makes the drive more comfortable. In fact, I don't have to wear safety goggles to keep my eyes from watering. Still no heat, so we'll see how it goes tomorrow morning when it's supposed to drop into the 20's! lowflyer Posted November 17, 2008 Share Posted November 17, 2008 My wife and I took our Stalker out on Friday for a run to our favorite local "breakfast joint". We left the house a little after 9:00 with a brisk 66 degrees showing on the patio thermometer. By the time we got back, around noon, it was 81! The restaurant is located in Totilla (Tor-tee-ya) Flats, an old mining community in the Superstition mountains. To get there we run about 30 miles on the freeway and then a glorious 20 miles over the swoopiest, turningest piece of blacktop this side of an autocross course. We generally go during the week to avoid the weekend traffic which includes lots of people towing boats out to one of the lakes in the area. The last time we went out, about 6 weeks ago, we were passed by 4 guys on "crotch rockets" only to find one of them lying on his back with his bike in a ditch about a mile later. While the road is fun and all, it does not suffer fools well. As for the temperatures you guys are suffering, we make up for the winters here when the summer temps hit 110!!! If I put a hat on and installed the heater I'm sure I could drive it down into the teens with no problem. I think some of the people at work are starting to think I'm nuts! I guess I'm just not ready for the driving season to end! So it was 22 degrees this morning and the only difference I could see was my hands felt a little cold by the time I got to work. The last two winters the weather was clear enough where I was able to drive into January, but that was in the MGB so it wasn't quite as much fun. According to Accuweather it was 19 degrees at 5 o'clock this morning so I have officially hit the teens. Definitely felt a little cooler but the insulated gloves made all the difference! 11Budlite Posted November 20, 2008 Author Share Posted November 20, 2008 Mike, Because I have a Zetec in the Birkin I've been using Mobil1, 5W-30. For my MGB I've been running 20w-50 in the summer and 10w-30 or 10w-40 in the winter (Castrol GTX because I still had cases of the old version with the higher levels of ZDDP-I might switch to Brad Penn when I run out). So far the temps are staying around 180 degrees with great oil pressure, but I should probably put in a 195 degree thermostat for the winter.
