My new nose cone and rear guards have arrived from my insurance claim for damage to my car while moving it from NZ to OZ, I had to fettle the nose cone a small bit as they had made a slight change to it, nothing major though and the new one fits much better than the one on the car now. The rear guards just need bolting up to check that they fit OK and then I will remove the front guards as well and take them to all be painted. I'm thinking a new color but I'm really having a hard time finding a nice color that goes with a all ali car, blue really does suit Aluminum.

Also I have been testing out a small Bimi top this week which was kindly loaned to me by a Birkin owner on OZ Clubbies, we went out on Sat with it on and it really helped cut the sun and heat off us while in the car and even kept the seats cool while we were having a coffee, its very simply made and I have had a price of $100 to make one with a couple of modifications I want to make.

Some pictures of the top (hard to believe the grass in the background was crispy brown 4 weeks ago, we have had a lot of rain)

Hi Stephen,

A couple of suggestions, you can get a combination male/female press clip that would replace your boot cover clips where the Bimi straps attach, this would look neater and remove the need to unclip your boot cover to attach the Bimi straps.

Have you thought about using two straps each side with a tensioner buckle, each side can come down to the same clip on the body.

Good price and mine came in very handy yesterday on the way home from work.

Nice video you posted on ozclubbies, I bet the coffee was not as good as you would have got from me!!!

Cheers

Maurice

Hi Maurice

The changes I want to make are exactly what you have suggested, I intend to leave 2 small pieces of strap with a click in buckle in the boot attached to where the roll bar mounts when I pout the top on these will click into the straps from the roof and I can tension it from there.

We must have a coffee with you sometime then. :):auto:

Hi Carl

I have wind deflectors on my Birkin and with the Bimi/Birkini roof the buffeting is reduced, still get an flow of air coming in from the rear but this is not too bad. It beats getting cooked by the sun or saturated by the rain as this roof is all I have. I don't have the Birkin roof/doors set.

I don't use it on normal driving usually only when it rains as the Birkin is my daily driver.

Cheers

Maurice

How does the Bimi top change the wind buffetting compared to not using it. Also any wind deflectors used?

Thanks,

Carl

For summer road driving I use the Soft Bits for Sevens half hood together with my modified Caterham perspex side wings off the windscreen. Together the buffetting is much reduced and you do not get fried in summer. The side wings were modified with a pot of boiling water to accentuate their curve and make them stand out from the body more. Easy upgrade for your car and makes it more usable in summer.

Time for the new guards and nose cone to be put on.

Up on stands ready for the guards to come off

New guard on, was a bit of a mission as the new guards seems narrower across the dia but I managed to pull them out and get them bolted on.

Wheels on, new guards have a much better shape to them than the older ones

Finished the car on Thursday evening and we went out for a spin in her on Sunday afternoon around the Hinterland, it was great to be back on the road in Grace. Drove to work this morning and had to put a jersey on :o.

The guys who painter Grace did a great job and also did the underside of the guards with rubberised ute liner to stop stone chips.

Some pics of it sitting in my workshop
