Hot Rod Fellowship?

Recommended Posts

Took the Seven out for a shake down cruise. It seemed odd but the hot rod (think T-bucket and 32 Ford) guys always waved. Normally they don't seem to acknowledge English sports cars.

Sevens have this sort of universal popularity / respect. In addition to the brit car guys, you tend to get waves from the bikes, the muscle cars, and the hot rods.

I can honestly say you will get more attention in a 7 than just about any car out there.

The first year 7 and I did the One Lap I felt like a rock star. Everywere we went we were getting our picture taken. You would drive by 18 wheelers they would have a camera sticking out the window to take pictures. We would pass folks and they would catch up and be taking our picture while traveling 85mph. We got hung up in the toll both in Chicago late one evening. We had people getting out of their cars and walking back to take our picture. I bet it happened 20 times the 40 min we were there.

I know another guy that has an Ultralite that owns Porsche, Ferrari and Lambos and says he gets way more attention in his Ultralite. They just draw people in. Everyone knows when you stop to fill up with gas at least 1 person will come up and start asking questions.

I had a UPS driver pull into a gas station about 10PM and walk up to my car while I was filling up. His first words "Now you know you can't stop for gas and expect no one to start asking questions". We talked for about 10 minutes beyond the time it took to fill up the car and had 4 or 5 others join us before I could get away.

Nearly everyone loves these cars and wants to know what it is, etc. Several times I have offered rides to strangers who obviously wanted to ask for one but were too polite to do it. Every one has taken me up on it so far. None of them had a clue that any car could accelerate, turn and brake like the Cat.

A 20 something woman asked for a ride as I was leaving a cruise in and when I ran it through 1st, 2nd and into 3rd she started screaming. I slowed down and brought her back, screaming all the way. She was helped out of the car and started hyper-ventilating. Her boyfriend got her calmed down but I thought for a moment we were going to have to call the EMTs.

The "wow" effect is a bit limited here in LA where a bunch of real fancy cars are around. But you can see smiling faces, thumbs-up, a lot of dumb and a few smart questions quite often.

Once a while I take the Seven to work and usually take one of the guys in my department as a passenger to the chosen lunch place. At one time I had the new compliance engineer as passenger. That drew some strange looks on the freeway. Me (mid fifties) in a fancy car of sorts, with a good looking Asian chick (mid twenties) as a passenger. Oh well, all for a good purpose....

A couple of weeks ago I met about 10 Chinese college administrators who were here at the local college. My car was parked on Main St., they asked if the could sit in it. One at a time they sat in the car with tons of flashes going off. Smiling making peace signs. Business suits with cameras around their necks. If I only had my camera! Would have made a great avatar. Hopefully one of them will post it on the internet so I can get a copy. It was awsome.

Well, the lunch of course!

BTW, we have annual mandatory training in the California harassment legal stuff so I guess I know what not to do as her manager.......

I took my car out for a spin the other day with my bullet cam strapped to the roll bar on the way back from a nice drive around the hills above Christchurch city, my wife wanted some thing from one of the malls we pulled in and we went shopping for about 1 hour, on our return I noticed I had forgot the camera was attached and it was still running when we got home i download the file and started to watch it when it got to the mall part over that 1 hour 7 people jumped into my car and had there picture taken by a mate all while I wasn't there the bullet can caught them :). I wasnt pissed off as they all took there time to enter the car and looked to be most carefull in getting in and out.

My wife has even had to come up to speed on what the car is and what its running as she often gets asked at petrol stations when i'm paying the bill, the other day I came out of a petrol station and she had even taken the hood off and was given a guy a guided tour of the engine bay and the worked we had done to the car since having it.

I'd be a little upset if someone sat in my car without asking. If they ask, I'd be happy to let them. Something about respecting people's property.

I agree. I'd be more than a little upset. Maybe that is where the mysterious small dimples in the ali by the cockpit are coming from. Anyone getting into my car gets instructions on how to do it and if they do it right there is no chance of dents in the ali.

Someone getting in on their own would most likely grab the windscreen for support and that is not allowed with my car. I rarely leave the car in a public place and never in a large parking lot.

Kiwi: Anything interesting in that video from the drive part to show us?

Skip - I love your technique with women - the harder you go the more they scream! :D

Still my biggest problem with the 7, the attention and its acceptance. I been invited to join brit car clubs, sportscar clubs, antique car clubs, now even the local exotic car club wants me in. They all feel the car fits, plus they think I am a nice guy. I keep wanting to sell the car and move on to something else, but what else can give me so much attention, pleasure for this kind of money (heck i am having trouble with findind a replacement for any kind of money).

As far as sitting in the car, happens here at the museum all the time with our cars and bikes. Even this weekend at a club meeting and while we were eating guy walks up a friend of mine's Lambo, opens the door looks in and takes pictures then shuts it. All without asking. Like I say I hate stupid people.

I think the worst I've seen is someone popping the hood on someone else's car at the track. When they got up to speed next session out, the hood flew back cracking the CF hood, windsheild and damaging the roof.

I was busy making a Youtube video from the footage Scannon when I had a hard drive fail on me and lost the footage, im hopeing if my wheels are painted by the end of the week to get out again with the bullet cam up to the Southern Alps as we have just had a massive dump of snow here 4 weeks earlier than normal and I should be able to get some good footage up there,

Hi KiwiBirkin,

Sorry to hijack the post but you are making me envious as I miss living in Christchurch. Spent 4 years at NSFA (VXE-6) at the airport coming and going to the ICE and loved every day that I was able to spend on the South Island between 1986 and 1990. Looking forward to see those mountain passes again.
