I have a windshield/air deflectors. Guess I feel the helmet won't help much if I get T-boned or someone pulls out in front of me. I do wear my 5 point harness. And am looking at more rollbar for side protection. Seriously, I'd be more worried about breaking my neck than hitting my head... guess I could wear a Hans Device with helmet everywhere;) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If anything it'll cover my "funny" mug as I drive by onlookers. hehe. I used to ride from 7am until dark w/ the bike for long trips. Prolonged exposure to noise is what I'm looking to avoid, so as much hearing protection (ear plugs & helmet) is what I'm after. I don't find ear muffs comfortable so I figure I'll take the ear plugs plus helmet and enjoy the added bit of safety a helmet provides. The helmet won't help w/ bodily impacts, that's true, but concussions are never fun as I recall......or don't. I also want to run with a minimal windshield to cut down on drag (higher top speed @ HPDEs and better MPG on the road) so the helmet should help greatly w/ comfort. Plus, the helmet will have an intercomm wired into it so I can speak to my passenger and play music at speed. I've never worn a Hans device, definitely good neck protection, but would it be too restrictive in your range of motion side to side such that it would be a liability? Everyone has their own balance of safety/comfort/fashion/practicality. I don't think it wld be a plus on the street for me tho, because I do a lot of scanning for distracted drivers, hidden cops, etc. With a HANS, lateral head movement is almost non-existent. Takes a ton of time to strap in with it too. Again, OK for the track but seems like a lot of work for the street. Helmet on the street is doable (tho hot). I wear ear plugs with the helmet for reduced noise. Many places make it illegal to drive a car w/helmet tho I doubt the cops will care. Never have when they have seen me. scannon Posted August 2, 2010 Share Posted August 2, 2010 I've driven my Caterham once with the Brooklands screens on and once with no windscreen at all. My observation is no windscreen is worst, regular windscreen is much better and the Brooklands is noticeably better than the windscreen as far as buffeting goes. Definitely easier on the ears. Besides needing to find the right mirrors, I am going to get some goggles and a Snoopy helmet before I start leaving the Brooklands on the car. I want some better eye and forehead protection as I'm sure some rocks will not be deflected the Brooklands. I recall getting a ride at the track in Keith Tanner's Locost with no windscreen. He had a small wind deflector in front of him and I had only the bonnet and cowl. Even with a helmet on it was brutal. When I commented on it he mentioned that I wasn't the first passenger to complain about it. I think he now has a full width aeroscreen on the car. But if ultimate protection is your goal, why not a full face helmet? BTW-why Twobone (and not three bone, for instance)? Twobone was the nickname of one of my dead dogs(Hunter). She was never satisfied with one rawhide bone. She used to steal my other dogs (Montana) treat and walk around with two bones, tail-a-wagging. twobone Posted August 16, 2010 Share Posted August 16, 2010 Hi guys. I've been trying to use the disposable foam plugs, but I find I'm left with plugged ears for a few days once I remove them.
