Seven shoes for a wide foot?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

my old & trusty (but discontinued) Merrel walking shoes are almost worn out and i'm having a hard time finding new shoes that are 1) narrow enough (no sole overhang) to work well in an '01 Caterham (std chassis, 1700 XFlow), 2) comfortable enough for prolonged walking/standing (work & hikes), and 3) not too geeky or flashy.

any suggestions for a shoe make/model that others w/ wide-ish feet have found workable & walkable? preference is definitely for low key (gray/brown/green colors) and robust design (suede/mesh mix?).

regards... WM

I bought Pilotis for my medium-width feet, but found that I had real interference problems with the pedals in my Caterham Series 3. Puma Speedcats solved the problem.

The Pilotis are supposed to be "driving" shoes, but they are noticeably wider in the welt area than the Pumas.

Like others said, don't plan to do a lot of walking in dedicated Seven driving shoes. Carry a spare pair of walking shoes.

I found Pilotis' did not work with my wide clodhoppers with a narrow heel and I ended up with Pikolinos driving moccaisons (sp?) and another pair of driving moccaison from the chain Johnston & Murphy. The Pikolinos are little more than a leather slipper. Both work nicely and are decent looking enough to be ok in a business casual office.

I recently bought a pair of Merrell "Barefoot True Glove" shoes for the gym, but I find they are perfect for driving (Birkin S3 and 11.5 EEE feet). There is no sole overhang, etc.

I see that Merrell offer a leather version so you don't always need to look as though you're on the way to work out. http://www.merrell.com/US/en/Barefoot_Collection

I prefer the Onitsuka Tiger, which is the original name for the Asics shoe company, Tai Chi model martial arts shoe, which is simply a leather slipper with a thin piece of rubber attached as a sole:

...Or the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66, which has a similar upper but with a bit more sole, particularly in the heel and mid-foot area:

Both add only the thickness of the leather to the width of one's foot - no additional width from padding or sole overhang.

edit:

Here's a Merrell Tough Glove, which similar to the OT shoes above:

Check out OMP's casual driving shoes or Puma Drift Cats on Zappos.

I drive mine with a set of Puma Speed Cats: http://www.zappos.com/puma-speed-cat-sd-us-black-black-white?zlfid=111

They are comfortable, very narrow, and I like wearing them even if I'm not driving. My only issues are the white leather sides pick up aluminum from the transmission tunnel so my right shoe has some discolorations. I can get some of it off but not all of it. Also, I usually wear my jeans on the long side with athletic shoes and these Pumas being so short cause my pants to drag a little.

They are great shoe and I'll probably buy another set of Puma's, probably the Drift Cat soon.

My Speed Cats were in dire need of replacement, so based on this thread I decided to give the Merrell Trail Glove a shot. Width is about midway between the Speed Cats and Pilotis, they are washable, and appear very well made. Comfort wise, they seem on par with my Speed Cats which are fitted with gel inserts (big improvement for Speed Cat comfort). But here’s the important thing for Se7en driving: they are insanely light. So light in fact, that I had to put them on the scale. They came in at 7.8oz vs. 15.6oz for the Speed Cats with the gel insert. I took the Westfield into work this morning and I swear I could feel the weight difference when accelerating. The car is now a rocket! :jester:

install a piece of clear vinyl around the pedal area, something like clear car bra material. no one will ever see it, and no more discoloration
