NJ Inspection for New Build CSR - Guidance Please!

Dear knowledgeable and patient USA7s members located in NJ,

After a 12 month (!) build process, I took delivery of a new CSR 260 on Wednesday. Foolishly, I had not used the prior 12 months wisely to fully understand the trials and tribulations of registering a Caterham in NJ. I knew that I would have to jump through hoops, but the more I'm reading the more concerned I'm getting...

The last guidance I could find on this forum, while excellent and detailed, was written at the end of 2009. I suspect much may have changed in the previous 5 years. Has anyone registered a new Caterham in NJ recently and are able to share their experience on how to navigate through the process? I hope you good folk can assist me and look forward to perhaps meeting at a future rally locally.

Last Caterham I owned was a 1700 Cross Flow in 1995-99, when I lived in the UK. Registration was a breeze there...

Well this is a good news and bad news type of first posting...

Firstly, welcome to the forum.

Secondly, congratulations on your new CSR. As an owner I can say it is an amazing car. I have been very happy with mine.

Thirdly, NJ registration....sigh....the difficulties that has caused.

My first recommendation is talk to the NJ MVC. There is a guy in Trenton who deals in special registrations. Talk to him by phone and talk through the registration process. There is an information packet they can send you with the relevant forms - you should get that before you start trying to title or do anything.

Then, forearmed with that knowledge, I would PM MrMustang on this forum since he has admitted himself to be the expert at getting cars through the NJ MVC special vehicle registration process. He has not put a new Caterham or any seven through the process but I defer to his superior knowledge of dealing with the NJ MVC. Hopefully he can fill in the details missing from the packet for you. It is supposed to be an easy process but that is not my experience...

Sent you a PM to chat offline by phone.

Hi Guys,

New member here. I just purchased a 2003 Caterham SV Duratec 2.3L from PA and would like to register it in NJ. Any new info? Did JKerrigan get his done??

Is the car titled as a "Specialty Construction" vehicle with a PA supplied VIN (usually start with SW then a bunch of numbers).

Sadly, in a PA to NJ title swap, whatever the title states is what the NJ title will also state as both are reciprocal in their title paperwork. Only if the car was titled as a "Specialty Construction", with the year left blank (hit and miss in PA) would you have a chance of a "dated" title.

I would not worry too much, as there are several "private" inspection stations that will be able to get the car legally through the emissions inspection of the state with tweaks to the engine management system during testing. Where in NJ are you located, as that too will make a difference as to where to point you in a direction.

Regards,

Bill S.

The car is titled as a 2003 Lotus, but does not have a cat, so I think there could be trouble ahead. Could I attempt to register it as a '65 Lotus?

Worst case I could go Montana...
