Left Leg Dead-Pedal or Footrest?

What do you guys do about the clutch pedal position?

 

I'm thinking that a parking space for your left foot like a dead-pedal or footrest would be a good idea.

 

Has anybody here built one of those?

From what I've seen, it would be difficult to install a dead pedal in most sevens. The foot box in my car is just a little over 12" across.

Pedal boxes are narrow unless you wear size 8AAA shoes.

I pull my left foot back a bit and slide it under the clutch once I am up to cruise speed. Its pretty comfortable under there. I also installed cruise control so I can pull the right foot back and over to the left a bit for those long interstate cruises. Both feet are now free to move about the cabin, er foot box.

I used to do that with my Birkin - great for long trips. With the floor-mounted pedals on my Storker, its not possible.

Same here for my Birkin. But I riveted a 1x1" right angle aluminum profile in a convenient position across the footwell to the floor sheet to give the heels something to hold on to. It does not prevent me from stretching my clutch leg under the pedal but makes long trips a bit more relaxing.

That sounds like a good idea, how about a picture to show the location. Does your heel ever catch on it when operating the pedals?

I have a similar arrangement to Gert except mine is a tiny 1x1 box section chassis tube that runs across there. I think it works brilliantly well as my feet tend to pivot off that for the pedals and it gives a nice bracing point in high G turns (not on road of course ).

 

One thing to look out for is that if your shoes are wet when you step into the car then the heel will slide on this bar/box tube negating its benefits. I applied skate tape over my box tube to stop that.

I made an aluminum frame from channel stock, that just wedges into the foot well. I have modified [reduced size] the clutch pedal rest since the photo to allow me to put my left foot under the clutch pedal on long trips. If building a rest, I suggest that you mock up the location before final assembly. You need to get the brake rest within +- a 1/4" to be effective. Dave W

I added an additional 1/2" HSS tube to the floor frame of my Stalker when I built it for a built in foot rest.

Thinking out of the box a bit, why not just increase the size of the master cylinder to a 1 inch so you can leave your foot on the clutch pedal. This increases the force required to depress the pedal so you will not accidentally slip the clutch. A 1 inch master pumps more fluid, so don’t forget to put a stop behind the pedal so you don’t blow out the slave.

Looks a bit too easy to get your foot stuck between the foot rest and the clutch. A shallow angle triangle might do the trick.

I use a 2 inch (about 1/2" thick) rubber floor protector stuck to the trans tunnel (I have RHD) with double sided tape. Just above the clutch pedal.

Works great. I also have small feet.

Just think of how hard us guys with size 11 feet have to work to drive a Caterham. We are more than willing to suffer for our cause.

This is my car and the dead pedal works great. You just need that small tab under the arch of your foot and you can put your full weight on it. I've adjusted it forward a little so that I can just feel the clutch pedal under the ball of my foot during normal driving. Moving from the dead pedal to the clutch is effortless and there is no danger of getting a foot stuck under anything. 200-mile cruises are very comfortable, and the pedal even works for bracing myself in turns.
