Polaris Slingshot

Its a very interesting alternative to a $70k Caterham especially as it comes with a warranty and dealer network. 1700 lbs seems a bit much though.

T-Rex performance at Can-Am price. I predict a lot of sales. The side-by-side seating is a plus in my opinion. Regardless of your preference, side-by-side eliminates the big CG shift between 1 and 2 occupants.

You need a helmet and motorcycle license unless they negotiate with each state for an exclusion, like Elio is doing.

Looks cool! I had a Polaris side by side 900XP for a bit. It was crazy fun. I just wish it had a manual trans. Glad to see this does.

I do not understand the one rear wheel idea though...

I would like to drive/ride one.

Anyone drive a 3 wheeler in the wet? Seems dangerous when the driving wheel is where oil slicks usually are. I've hit oil slicks in my 7 and those aren't fun.

Good point!

I have not drive a 3 wheeler (yet). But I'm assuming the very real risk of death is the fun part!

Somebody has a great marketing dept. Videos were pretty fun, but I did laugh out loud while sarcastically exclaiming back to the Product Video narrator, "Wait...it's got gas filled coilovers AND a sway bar??!"

Need to see a similar video produced with any Seven/variant.

The T-Rex is one nervous little beast. I was a passenger for a memorable and scary ride near Montreal several years ago. While the acceleration was decent, it was a real handful in the fast corners -definitely not confidence inspiring (extra underware is a good idea).

The driver admitted that his M3 was quicker thorugh the same turns, and didn't have any of the drama but isn't that what it's all about? I don't see these trikes as having much track cred but they're great at giving a strong perception of performance at relatively low speeds.

Having tracktion control in the slingshot should reduce the need for that extra pair of underware...

That was my experience as well with the T-Rex. Had one for a few days when I was working with C/D mag and it was one of the scariest cars I've ever driven/ridden in. It would go from strong understeer to snap oversteer and there wasn't much in the way of communication from the chassis or steering (which for non power assist was completely dead feeling).

It was the only car the test driver had ever spun while doing straight line testing and I think it's the only car I ever had to ask him to slow down while I was a passenger with him and I had been in some seriously fast cars (over 170mph) with him before

Additionally, there was no way to avoid anything in the road at speed, you couldn't steer around it in fear of the car spinning (and it did), so you would just have to hit it with the rear wheel.

Not sold on the three wheel concept at all.

That said, it was fun to cruise in and it stopped people in their tracks, perhaps the most attention I've received in any vehicle.

Does anyone have any head-to-head skidpad or road-course tests of a 3-wheeler and a performance 4-wheeler (like Seven type)?

Seems to me that if a 3-wheeler had superior cornering performance (not sensation, but actual performance). we would see more of them in sporting competition.

I consider them expensive toys and not performance machines, and perhaps justifiable only if they qualify under some motorcycle-only legal loopholes. I believe the Morgan trike in UK in the 1930's escaped an automobile tax because it was a "motorcycle."

1700 lb. for 3-wheeler seems about 600 lb. too heavy. Obviously they have subtracted one wheel, but have not "added lightness."

My point was that the Slingshot with 170 HP should straight-line outperform the Can-Am Spyder with its 100 HP 998 cc engine. On the other hand, the weight difference is similar. I've never driven a 3-wheeler, but I have seen a 3-wheel Morgan roll over at Willow Springs.
