  3. Look at mine. Real easy to make. Used old colapsible tent poles for stiffeners. Besure to take the glass out of the windshield before drilling for the snaps. Russ http://autos.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/Locost_North_America/photos/browse/3ce3
  4. 17 degrees F and no top, doors, heater, or windshield. Quite invigorating. Got more that a few stares. Hay I never said I was smrt. Also I don't do salt either. I now have a windshield and a much needed heater. Try to do doors and engine replacement this winter if I ever stop driving it, Russ
  5. I have a T9 from a Merkur with bell housing, prop shaft, used clutch and p-plate that I bought to use in my Locost and now my plans have changed. You can have it for $200 plus frt if you are interested, Russ
  6. Here is what my flier looks like. Anyone is free to copy and modify for your use. It is placed over a faded picture of my car in the background, Russ The Lotus Seven Inspired “Locost” In 1957 Colin Chapman introduced the Lotus Seven. It was designed as a no-frills, inexpensive sports car. The design has not changed much over the years and is still available today as the Caterham Seven. The prices of these cars have shot up from under $1,000.00 in 1957 to over $44,000.00 for a new Caterham CSR Seven today. The high prices for these cars has inspired a plethora of “copy cat Sevens” all over the world. Several manufactures have made packaged kits to build your own car. All you need is a donor car. In North America the Mazda Miata, Honda S2000, and the Chevy S-10 pickup are some of the more popular choices for a donor. Utilizing these kits a person can assemble a “Seven” for under $20,000.00 including the donor. But for those who really want a “Inexpensive Sports Car” the choice is the “Locost”. It is one of the most successful copies of the venerable “Seven” in the world. The “Locost”, which stands for ”low cost”, cars are built in your garage or backyard from the ground up. “Locosts” are built with salvage yard parts and a frame of 1” square steel tubing that you weld up yourself and then skin the outside with aluminum. About the only manufactured items you need are the fenders (wings) and the nose cone, and even some people build these themselves. This particular car was built in England and imported to the United States in 2003. It is my daily driver and is driven year round, weather permitting (I’ve been known to be out driving at 17°). It was built from plans utilizing Ron Champion’s book “How To Build A Cheap Sports Car For Under 250 Pounds”. The donor was a 1979 British-made Ford Escort mkII. It has a 1300cc Ford Crossflow Kent engine and 4 speed manual transmission. Free downloadable plans for a similar car were designed by Jim McSorley and are available at mcsorley.net . 8. That is why I carry a sheet of paper describing my car and the Locost concept with web sites to visit that I hand to them after I talk to them. Gives them something to remember and to get their minds thinking, Russ
  9. Got 86%. Not too bad for an old guy, Russ
  10. I have a garden tractor battery in mine and it works just fine as long as you don't crank too much. The only times I have had a problem is when it sets for a few weeks and I have to put the charger on for a while. Just be sure to take the sticker off the side that shows a garden tractor and a nice pictoral seen. I forgot and you would not believe the ribbing I got when my friends saw it. Russ
  11. Mine is 63deg and 13" in the center, Russ

  24. Well I am finally rested from the Midwest Se7en Gathering at the Brits in the Ozarks Car Show in Fayetteville, Ark. It was a lot of fun I tell you. On Friday I went out on one of their self guided tours that they had all mapped out for participants to go on. There are more twisties down there than a bread factory. On one stretch I went for twenty miles and could not see more than about 100 yards of road in front of me at any one time. About half way through my morning blat I saw a sign for an old grist mill just off the road a bit so I thought I would take a break and drive down to it. When I got to the parking lot there was hardly any parking places left. It was full of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and other exotics. These were not kit cars but the REAL things. It seems that the Kansas City Ferrari Club was down there on an Ozark tour. I counted over 30 cars and most of them were worth well over $175,000 each. I pulled in the parking lot and all eyes were on my car. When I stopped several of the drivers came over to scope out my Locost and ask me questions. All I wanted to do was go over and look at their cars. It was a very fun time. I have never seen more than 1 or 2 of these types of cars in one spot before. And to see 30+, I was like a kid in a candy shop. When I got back to the hotel later that afternoon I had to wash a lot of Arkansas’ finest bugs off the front of my car. Got to look good for the reception that evening, you know. Thank goodness I have a windshield. On Saturday they had over 160 cars in the show. Mine was the only Locost but there was a super clean Lotus 7 racer in my class (Race/modified) along with several other cars. I did not win anything this year but that is not the reason I went. I went to talk up the Locost concept and to meet with several people who post on this site including Dr. Hess, Ed Young, Julian D, and about 7 or 8 others who’s names I can’t remember (Getting old sucks). I handed out over 40 fliers describing the Locost ideals and listing out the most popular websites, manufactures, and what books to buy to do a build. Hopefully we will see some new names pop up soon. Time to get some more rest, Russ
  25. No excuse, prwerbreak. Congrats. I'll be glad when that day comes for me, but she has to have her first date before that. I pity him. Mood swings big time. TEENAGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Russ
