  1. My understanding is that the combination of cycle fenders and full windshield ends up pushing a lot of air into the side of one's head (in my case at any rate). The windshield side wings I added to my car reduce the effect. I suspect it is a swirl/vortex coming off the outer edge of the windshield. I can push the wings out further and feel a further reduction in buffeting, which supports the theory. I don't know how much a half door would do to stop that from happening, but my WAG would be "not too darn much". Everything is happening higher up. Here's a chronicle of one fellow's attempts to 'fix' the situation. https://fernlahone.wordpress.com/2014/08/16/experiments-with-wind-deflectors/
  2. This could be a thread starter all by itself. I have an IRS related story involving multiple years, hundreds of printed and mailed pages, and countless hours on hold, that would fit perfectly.
  3. Wow, I haven't posted here in a while. To be honest the Elan has been getting the lion's share of my attention, first in repairs and then in actual use once it was back on the road. The Porsche was also out of commission for a while so I was using the Elan as my daily for which it was not half bad. It didn't hurt that the weather was so cooperative and I could just leave the top stowed, hop in, and go. I even did the "before we put 'em away" drive in the Elan with the drop head dropped. The flip side is that the poor Cat has been a bit neglected. I did take it out for a drive yesterday, the first 70+ degree day we've had this year. (I also had it out for short jaunts once or twice earlier just to keep it from getting gummed up.) I meant to more or less go around the block, just get the juices flowing properly and get everything fully warmed up and so on, but as things happened I ran through about a tankful. Such a delightful thing. I forgot how much my eyeballs jiggle. I really want to try the brooklands screen. I really need to put some proper tires on the car too. In the meantime it's fun to wear the all-seasons out via lurid (ish) power slides, w00t!
  4. The actual tariff that went into effect today was 10%. Just FYI. I'm sure the importer will have more detailed information as things progress.
  5. You'll change your tune when the Caterham factory opens in the US creating thousands of new jobs!
  6. I'm not sure if I ever finished my tariff tale. After getting a bill for 200% of the cost of the item + fees, plus weeks upon weeks of being on hold with various entities and getting nowhere, I finally refused shipment and the shipping company sent the part back to England -- on their dime. When the seller got it back he immediately sent me another one, marked as a replacement for the returned item. I was not billed any import fees for the second one. An expensive lesson but only in terms of time spent.
  7. Right. They're both cars that you put on like a pair of pants.
  8. Sorry to hear about this. I did a Porsche school there and yes the track is glorious. I did not get as much time as I wanted at the museum though. The grounds are spectacular too. Mr. Barber was quite a visionary.
  9. Or in the US, Sat-yer-ham. 🐷
  10. KAY-ter-uhmm is how I say it. The first time I heard someone say CAT-err-ham I may have given them a strange look.
  11. Then there was the infamous Top Gear episode where Richard Hammond tried his hand at a modern F1 car and pretty much failed to get through the first turn.
  12. That car definitely has its share of insanity baked in. Seems odd that they didn't drive it much -- perhaps the need for military-strength hearing protection? Here's a pic of the rear. Solid axle!
  13. You appear to have a favorite color scheme. Beautiful cars!
  14. Diverting slightly from the main topic -- I was reading up on the titanium wrap and it says that it loses its flexibility after heat cycling. Has anyone ever tried removing the material? It sounds like it might be a tad messy or difficult.
  15. I was referring to getting the email notification, but yeah I agree: a) it takes both parties being reasonably sane; b) it is primarily a way for Hearst to keep their fingers in the pie a bit longer.
  16. It appears that BaT has a new feature. I was notified by email that a deal was struck between the high bidder and the seller after the auction ended. $24K. I see that the auction page has been updated with that information as well.
  17. @JohnCh can you do the needful? "Club Member" seems, I dunno, insufficiently suffoncified at this juncture...
  18. Cobblestone floormats (in the picture I posted), shape-shifting taillights, twin shift stalks on the column, among other things. Consensus in the thread is that it was a more-or-less innocent attempt to make the background look better, a.k.a. "put this car in front of an elegant house", that went off the rails.
  19. Speaking of AI... https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1999-cadillac-deville-21/
  20. That looks like it sits further back in the chassis than my Caterham. Did you do your test fit with the gearbox attached? Here's a picture of the twink in my Caterham for reference.
  21. I use these for notifications from BaT: https://bringatrailer.com/caterham/seven/ https://bringatrailer.com/lotus/other-seven-replicas/ https://bringatrailer.com/lotus/seven-caterham-seven/ https://bringatrailer.com/lotus/seven-super-seven/
