2021 Annual USA7s Event with NJMP Drivers Club - September 19/20

Well done Paul. My gearbox is in the USA. Now I just have to get it to the workshop and swap it over while traveling for the next 3.5 weeks. I may just have a Caterham to drive for this event. -
Welcome back to the se7ening world! Neighbors may not be as happy though!

What about odyssey battery tie downs?

Calling @JBH for NCM.

My Duratec will do that until warmed up - I have to sit and blip the throttle until it gets happy. If you hold revs higher than idle will it get past this "cold" stage until it can idle on its own?

The 41cm at the side rail is what I was expecting. You will get a 40cm width seat in. You want some small clearance to avoid scratching the interior panel powder coat. Tillett are backed up for months. It was 5 months delay in late 2019. A short cut approach which I took on my UK Caterham was call them direct and ask if they have any quality seconds. I got a carbon seat immediately, with a discount, and they cut the rolled edges for me to fit my SV - they delivered it to my UK mechanic in a week. I have still not found the blemish that made it a seconds seat. Best bit is that I bypassed the wait time. They may try to fob you off to the US dealer but try to push to deal direct - it is much quicker that way. I think the exclusive dealer is in CA which may be of use if you want to try the seats on for comfort/size.

OK - thats a later speedo than I was thinking. I also just remembered this is a Sigma which is important as the tach is wired into the CAN Bus which is important for why you see a signal. For Sigma cars, supposedly they can provide OBD2 codes for engine only. Copying from the Caterham User Manual produces the following text: Engine warning - Amber If this lamp illuminates with the engine running it indicates a malfunction within the engine control system. Each malfunction will have a specific code and description and can be read using an OBD generic scan tool. This should be carried out as soon as possible. If engine warning light persists, please seek qualified assistance from Caterham By the way, the Caterham user manuals are located in the Download section of this forum - look for the menu option top left. So I would stick an OBD2 reader on it and see what codes pop for the engine. I suspect what you will see is a code P0100 Mass Airflow Sensor. That will not help you as Caterhams do not have one unless you have an EU spec car and that would be unlikely for you. The end diagnosis seems to be this thread here on Blatchat. Engine Check Light - MAF Fault | Lotus Seven Club (lotus7.club) it also confirms you should be careful reading Caterham user manuals! A really good article for understanding what signals Caterham ECUs put out was done here: ECU Diagnostics – part 2 : ECU, OBD and CAN | PurpleMeanie -

@mrmustang Is it a red LED on the base of the speedo? Or is it on the tach? Do you have the digital ODO or the old style rolling barrel one? You have a 2012 car so should be old style pre-2015 speedo with the LED. Caterhams "check engine light" is not as sophisticated as a regular car so it will not alert you to much on the engine other than electrics which is usually somewhere in the alternator line of thinking. Is it on at start up then goes away? Or does it stay on and never go off? If it is the same LED light that I am thinking of, then betting odds would have me looking at: - alternator belt tension - alternator voltage output - that the chassis earth is still in place. - battery condition If it is on at start up and then eventually goes away after half a minute then that is normal. -
What is the width of your S3 cockpit "bathtub"? The SV chassis is 47cm from memory. The S3 should be like 42cm? You have a couple of options. CarlB suggested the S3 seats. These are very comfortable and allow you to expand to the sides of the cockpit without having the bucket sides of the Tillet taking up room. These seats work well for touring, backroads, etc. They are ok on a track but they do not locate your upper body well in high G corners. I used them for a long time. Link to product (missing headrest) Seat - S3 - Leather (caterhamparts.co.uk) There are other Tillett seats that might work. What about the B3.5 and B6.5? I am expecting that you can get a 40cm width to seat edges to work. You can also get the rolled edge trimmed to save a few cm - Tillett does offer that - I have bought their seats that way allowing me to go up a size for my ample proportions. TILLET_CAR_BROCHURE_2020_WEB.pdf (tillett.co.uk) Reverie makes a series of seats suitable for Caterham but really need to confirm the width of your cockpit. Their Mulsanne B and C should fit at 41cm. @mrmustangYour car should have a MBE 9A4 ECU? The plug is J1962 which is the same as OBD2. However, the pin outs are different. The output is CAN. OBD2 is CAN too but not all CAN is OBD2 which is the case of the Caterham MBE ECUs. Older Caterhams with zetecs often used the Ford ECU which could be plugged into an OBD2 reader. Plenty of error codes would show (e.g. lack of original gas tank, emissions equipment, etc) but you could see engine codes to diagnose errors. Easimap is a tuning tool. EASIMAP 6 PC Software (sbdmotorsport.co.uk) To use it obviously you download but you need to buy the expensive cable between computer and ECU from SBD exclusively - it is a proprietary set up. Enough owners on here have bought one over the years to tune cars that you may be able to borrow one. Even then you can only look at data on the PC as the car is running. You cannot change anything without the password. It will be real time setting data and not error codes like you get with OBD2. It is really designed to be used in a dyno environment. Unless you are planning to re-tune the car, its not really worth it. You can also get the same result with an AIM Solo 2 DL data logger but the advantage here is you can drive and get results better in a live environment which can be helpful for certain types of diagnosis. In my example below I wanted to test intake temps and oil temps in a real track environment. When setting up the AIM Solo you will need to specify the ECU as being on a Noble (vehicle). Noble use the same brand ECUs as Caterham, albeit an upgraded model of ECU. I was never comfortable all the data was correct - the TPS data looks suspect as does the Lamda. GPS is slightly off from timing of engine data too. I suppose the question is - what are you looking to achieve? -

Really neat installation. I enjoyed this thread. How do you trigger the fire extinguisher in emergency? Is it just a hand held or is it plumbed in?

2021 Annual USA7s Event with NJMP Drivers Club - September 19/20

There is no need to use the curbing on that corner. It was designed to look visually tighter than it really is - the corner opens up after the apex. NASCARs/ARCA cars go through there on throttle at 140mph. A high hp seven is getting through there around 110-115mph on throttle with no brakes and it feels very stable. If in doubt lift on entry to the corner or tap the brakes but never go near that curbing. -

Not every Youtube suggestion is a good one. That is a particularly bad choice to follow. That turn (turn 12) plus turns 2 and 4 are the ones where you never should try to save to car and instead just let it go off left side. Plenty of run off on the left to be safe. -
Phone holder worked great - time for a new camera mount though!

@DatsunRBZ Lots of questions to unpack but let me try: 1) Intermediate is the sevens exclusive run group. Passing by point by on straight only. There will be a second intermediate group running on the day but that will be for regular cars. You should have done a decent amount of track days and driven solo in passing groups before. 2) Green group is a progressive paced laps. No passing. Designed for those with no previous track day experience at any circuit. For this coming event this is a regular group of mixed cars. It will not be an exclusively sevens group. 3) Proof of experience. To run intermediate please PM me a list of past events/circuits you have run and whether those were solo, with instructor, and whether they were passing car sessions or not. The main thing is to ensure that we do not throw a complete circuit novice out on track with cars trying to pass, etc. You may never have been to NJMP before, and thats ok if you have experience in intermediate group track events at other circuits. The intent is to know you have ability to drive the correct lines on track, make you feel safe and not overwhelmed by faster drivers coming up from behind and to keep other drivers safe because they know you will behave predictably on track. Past NJMP experience is not necessary as your experience on other tracks will have taught you the skills to know how to learn new lines on a new track. 4) You can always register in intermediate and we can amend that on the first day once we have reviewed your experience. Sign up errors are easy to fix. 5) In the past we have done some seven drivers starting off in the green group to get comfortable with the circuit then migrate to intermediate once they are up to speed on track lines. Once you have sent your experience over, I am happy to talk through the groups by phone if it helps you get comfortable with a decision. -
Thanks. Have heard of them as a specialist in Triumphs and Minis.
