A number of your have met Lou and his Lotus 59 Formula Ford at the NJMP annual sevens event. We let him run with us as the car is amazing and he is quite quick like a seven. A piece of automotive jewellery.

Citroen @CV gearbox and suspension bolted onto a custom chassis. All bespoke body work. The boat tail is actually fiberglass with a coating to resemble real polished ali. Look at it closely and you would suspect it has been english wheel turned.

@Bartman My CSR chassis is slightly different to yours but should still work. I removed the trapezoidal section of ali plate that covered the rear of the transmission tunnel/diff area. No cutting - just removing one of the original panels that closed it off. Just drilled out the rivets, removed and left it open. Air now flows through the tunnel freely and the tubes are a lot cooler. I no longer burn my elbow or leg on the inner cockpit. Your instincts of just trying to get the air moving in the tunnel are correct.

Is your transmission tunnel faired in underneath with ali sheeting? Then easiest solution is to remove a portion to allow a free venting of the hot air from the engine bay which gets trapped in the tunnel - at least thats how I fixed the same issue in my Caterham CSR.

@KnifeySpoony Excellent idea - thanks for posting. Most people have no idea that mount point is there as they have never enjoyed the 'pleasures' of hanging upside down in a footwell. Have you tried it on track? All secure even in high G corners?

@KryptonR500 By chance did you buy this Caterham off Ron? It looks like his old R500 and there were very few brought into the USA in that color. If so I have a build photo plus one of its entertaining shakedown drive in Denver.

An MBE 9A4 should be what you have in your Caterham now. The only difference to your existing ECU is that it is an 'unlocked' ECU where you can customize your engine map. It should be plug and play with the existing engine harness although SBD should confirm on the pin out. You would then need to tune it yourself which you could do via the approach Tom (and others) have taken with the remote tune. What Tom did not say is he had the special cable for engine to laptop connection (only sold by SBD), had a wideband set up for monitoring during the tune since SBD could not monitor that, and Easimap software loaded up and ready to run. Or you can find a local dyno tuner, provide them the ECU to laptop cable/software (Easimap) that would allow them to map it for you. Last option is buy an ECU (cue @JohnCh re Emerald) and modify the engine harness to connect it but then you can map it locally with complete flexibility. Or you can rip out the current tank, replace it with their proposed one and avoid touching the ECU. All painful choices sadly. If you ever think you will upgrade your engine in the future then I would go the new ECU approach with something that can be readily dyno'ed here as it will be easiest in the long run.

I have never bothered with the rest cycle. Some slick tire manufacturers recommend it, some don't. Se7ens never seem to trigger the same heat cycle intensity in slick tires that other heavier cars do.

The seating positions between bench and S3 seat should be similar on a standard floor. The lowered floor option should give you an extra 1 inch lower. Its hard to say without doing the measurements to compare.

@sf4018Graham is right - not normally. However, there is a setting in the Caterham ECU map for fueling by batch or sequential - that may come into play. Secondly, in some cars being lately upgraded from 420 to R500 they have been finding that they needed to change injectors to work with the upgraded ECU map. So the Caterham ECU seems to interact in the fueling process beyond just the fuel pressure regulator but its not exactly clear to me why/how?

The cam is not any better in the race 420Rs. Its slightly more aggressive but I have a standard 420R in the UK and I hang on the back of or ahead of the race 420Rs just fine at various UK circuits, so I assume any power increment is minimal. I would not assume what you have is not sturdy enough. I suspect what Caterham are choking up against is the locked ECU tune which is not compatible with the fueling programming in the existing ECU. But that can be fixed with a bespoke ECU tune which they would never recommend as it takes you outside their proprietary ecosystem.

Since I am the type to not care about farting in elevators, I will say the obvious here.... I would not reassemble that engine without a full tear down to bare block. Those rusty coolant galleys are unacceptable. You will not be cleaning those with pipecleaners and Windex. You will only do that type of cleaning with a bare block immersed in a chemical solution with electrical current. If you reassemble with them looking like that you will be compromising the engine result. Simply put, you will not have completely solved your cooling issues and you will continue to see evidence of problems and it will less reliable and more likely to fail. I know this is not what you want to hear. I get you are on a budget and are trying to do things right but not spend extra money where not necessary. You may be thinking the cheap option here is just to reassemble the head and off you go. Thats no longer the case. Thats the really expensive option since you will have to do a full rebuild in some short order plus you are depriving yourself from a reliable car for longer plus the resale value loss if you sell with this internally flawed engine. I am sure there are others reading this post who are sharing some of my concerns but do not want to offend. However, if someone has a better idea than me then please step up and say so as this is the critical decision time for Vlad's project and he needs the best guidance he can get from what I know to be a really experienced bunch of "old hands" in this club. I won't be offended if my views are contradicted for good reasons - we are all learning here, me included.

What a monumental cock up! I feel the pain in this one. Bit late to return now. Do you pitch in for an unlocked MBE ECU or another brand of ECU and put your own tune on it thereby fixing the fueling spec issue in a locked proprietary ECU?
