Guy's Thanks for ALL the great input today on this thread! :hurray: The consensus is definitely in favor of enclosed trailers which is what I’ve been leaning toward. :iagree: I like the lower weight of an open trailer, but I do, for all the reason listed here, gravitate toward an enclosed trailer; be it an open trailer with a fabricated cover or a factory built enclosed trailer. Thanks again for all the input, great ideas, suggestions, experiences, etc. Shane

Russ, That's one of the ideas I've been bouncing around in my head, but doing it with a tandem axle trailer. I do like it.

Tom, Thanks for the input on length. Although, with my car having a 92" wheel base, I wonder if 18' might not be plenty. Great idea on the dovetail. Since I've yet to put any coin on the table, I'd like to through out another idea for discussion. I've also considered pulling the trigger on an open trailer and building an enclosure to suit my taste (not sure just what that 'taste' might be). Thoughts?????

LOL!!!!! Is Lucas a nickname for Lucifer?

Thanks, DeanG, I've looked at the smaller motorcycle trailers, but wondered (for the very reasons you pointed out) whether or not I could fit all the other stuff along with the car. Tom, You said you were pulling an 18' trailer. Is that overall length or usable inside length? Anybody else got a trailer length they want to toss in for discussion?

I'm sure it's bitter sweet, but congratulations on the sale. Someone got a great at a great price.

Drying the carpet in my Cobra required towels, blow dryers and a liberal amounts of 'verbal' incentives. :banghead: :cuss:

It should be pretty obvious by now that all of my towing (regardless of what's being towed) is done with an open trailer. If I go enclosed for the 'Storker', this may solve my mirror woes. Anybody use these? http://www.etrailer.com/Custom-Towing-Mirrors/CIPA/CM11300.html Thanks again, pksurveyor, for the link. Lots of good stuff there. Looks like my Tundra is plug-n-play for a brake controller.
-
Thed mirrors on my Tundra measure approximately 8' from outside-to-outside. Anybody towing an enclosed trailer with this approximate mirror width? If so, what width trailer? I thought I'd done some good research up to this point, but my ignorance is starting to shine. I'm all :bigear:
-
Dang! Headed outside to check overall mirror widths. :ack: You guys are making me think; bringing some very good considerations to the table.
-
powderbrake, I've not given thought to sway control with an enclosed trailer, or brake bias; excellent points. Thanks.

pksurveyor, Good points all around. And yessir, got the 5.7 liter. Your MPG is dead-on with what I get when I tow to MSR Cresson using a rented (open) U-haul car hauler.

Okay, guys, I know this topic is 'old hat', but I'm in the market for a trailer and want (NEED) your input on enclosed vs. open trailers. I know there are pros and cons with respect to gas mileage, size, security, single/double axle, protection from the elements, etc., but I'd like some 'real world' input from a group who has used both. My tow vehicle is a gas-guzzling 2013 Tundra by default. In my part of the world, a pickup is pretty much a necessity, and we have a tendency to tow other things that require brawn. Still, if gas mileage is your debatable point, please put it on the table as I would like to hear all points-of-view. :grouphug: If you've towed long-distance with an open/closed trailer, I'd like to hear how about; any issues you had, etc. Please chime in with all. Thanks in advance. Standing by. . . . . . :lurk:

Mike, That car WAS Death Race 2000! :ack: That's the car I mentioned in the Handling Thread as being a beast in the turns; improper setup yielding lots of over steer. :banghead: But it was still fun . . . . . sorta. Needless to say, it didn't care to challenge wet asphalt. :jester:

Jeff, I did find a couple of old photos from, again, back in 'the day'. The blue Cobra in the background is the car my wife took for the wet-weather test hop. The red car (I can feel you cringing :jester:) is the tricked-out Tipo. . . . .
-
JBH, No, I didn't build the car. It was built by, and belonged to (still belongs to), a friend of mine (Ron) who lives in Benton, AR. If I can round up a photo of the car, I'll post it. However, be forewarned, this car IS NOT what you have pictured in your mind. In fact, in hindsight, I should probably have simply said in my post that we were in another Cobra; everybody who saw the thing would ask, "Is that a Cobra"? Sorry to be misleading, but just wanted to add clarity to my story. He (Ron) basically purchased a FG replica body from a fellow named Bill Bonadio (producer of the Tipo kit at the time) and put it on a pro street chassis, and, it sports a V8. :svengo: What can I say, I simply run with a rough crowd who, at times (more often than not), tend to butcher any real appreciation for authenticity. :jester: For what it's worth, here are couple of photos of Bill Bonadio's car from 'the day'; the way I think it was intended to be built, at least to some extent.

I started my midlife crisis at an early age and have managed to maintain an ongoing, reoccurring theme ever since. If the definition of insanity is repetitive behavior with the expectation of the outcome being different each time . . . then I suppose I'm all in. :willy_nilly: Maybe that's why I keep modifying and tinkering.

Nice transition you did there, Mike!

The wife got caught out in a hard rain in a Cobra replica that we owned a few years back (like most, no top). She was driving back from a car show and hauling trophies and door prizes for two cars. We had checked the forecast for the afternoon and new it was going to rain, but, at the urging of the host of the car show, we stuck around for the awards. I was following along with a buddy :iamwithstupid: in his Maserati Tipo Birdcage replica; nope, no top on that one either. Not too far from home, the bottom fell out and there we were. I'm talking the kind of rain that brings traffic to a crawl. My poor wife was doing all she could to see the road and at about a quarter of a mile from the house, she pulled off at a gas station; said she couldn't see. :toetap05: We traded places (me in the Cobra and her in the Birdcage) and off we went; we were already wet and almost home, so why not? I found out very quickly why she said she couldn't see. Turning on the windshield wipers revealed that the inside of the windshield was just as wet as the outside . . . I couldn't see either. :dupe: Fortunately, we made it home okay and the only damage was a bit of wounded pride from the show we were putting on for the folks around us and some extremely wet carpet. Yeah . . . I'd do it again. :jester:

I am humbled. :chillpill: Oh . . . 53 in June. :ack:
