Classic Motorsports Mitty at Road Atlanta May 2-4
sparecr replied to solder_guy's topic in Southeast
I am trying to figure out how to make it. Kicker is I have a sailboat race that Saturday I can't get out of. Might be there Sunday, unless we do a work trip on Friday. -
AL don't tell anyone but I am a judge for that event and can be bought.:7frog: Thanks.

When I get asked if its a kit I say, "yes but do you realize but even when Lotus sold them they were kit cars?" which leads to further questions but I enjoy it. My car is baged as a Lotus, has a Lotus Twin Cam, and is such an early Caterham I sometimes just wuss out and play along like it is a Series 2. Sorry John D. and JW.

Oh and they weren't hiring when I got my job. Just proves it doesn't hurt to ask.

Are you an extremely good motorcycle mechanic?

Hagerty policies will normally have a locked garage statement, meaning the car must be kept in a permenant locked structure of some sort. As far as leaving your car in a hotel parking lot it would vary policy to policy, but look for line of sight in the policy. Many companies will hide this, but it means if you cannot see the car it is not insured (ie if you are sleeping in your hotel, if you are in the restroom, if your back is turned). On a friendly note I know the owner of Hagerty personally and he is a great guy who supports the hobby. He has done a lot to help us be able to use our cars and keep them insured. There is a nice article on one of his cars in the 11/07 issuse of Sports Car Market. (Remember I insure with Stae Farm so this isn't a plug but something to keep in mind.) Jim Grundy is also a car guy (Grundy Insurance).

State Farm $500 yr (car insured in VA), house, apartment, 9 cars, life, umbrella. No milage limits no restrictions, but since I work at a "car show" I could live with restrictions. I also run real VA plates. (plus I totaled my wifes car last year and had a small happening in my truck)

Funny, since I never track my car. I also figure most accidents will result in death I removed my rollbar last week for a more period look. Of course this picture is from Sunday...http://www.usa7s.org/aspnetforum/upload/95418754_101_0911.JPG Oh also this me on Sunday (boss' car) http://www.usa7s.org/aspnetforum/upload/395216520_101_0902.JPG

SV or not SV ... that is the question
sparecr replied to jcm0791's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I have an early Caterham (1975 kit registered as a 1978). I find the fit great but I am 5-7 and 140. Caterham in 81 or 82 came up with the long cock pit version which added a few inches to the cockpit without altering the look of the car. This became standard across the line in either 87 or 92 (memory fails me right now). I have never sat in a SV but comparing to a Six or Eleven I like the closeness my car allows. If you can't fit a small car you have no choice but the SV. If you fit both you make the call, I am not sure which is more in demand in the used market. -
I love my Elan. It is the daily driver side to the Caterham. The two combine to make a hell of an Elise. However I am thinning my heard and the Elan is for sale (along with my 79 Lil Red Express). Right now the wife has the Elan in VA (really sucks she has her EOS, Wrangler, and Elan, 3 convertibles how rough). She might have it up at Carlisle if all goes well. Fiat 124, one of the few cars with more problems than a Lotus. I would tempt fate my calling it a Lotus.

I talked with Carlisle yesterday and they are planning an event at their local drive-in also. I am sure watching a movie from out plywood covered seats/carbon fiber with no padding sounds great. But it is an event from the show. The movie is reported to be Ironman. This is for both Friday and Saturday nights. Al the dinner idea sounds great. I won't vote that way you can't blame me. Local can be interesting. I may be up for the drive thing also, I am not sure when I have to start my return trip. Heck not even sure when starting my arrival trip, but I will be there mid morning Friday. Rememeber pre-register and be sure to mention USA7s.org as the club, even the Lotus guys without 7s coming can do this (unless you want to use Lotus Ltd). The Saabs create a club every year so they win best club turn out. We can fib a little to get a free tent, right? (I should end up with 3 registrations for USA7s the Caterham, the elan, and the Robinson 7.)
-
Al is right. You really should pre-register if you are going to put a car on the field. Saturday morning the registration trailer is busy and you will waste half your day just getting in. Remember if we get 25 car pre-registed our tent is free. Also if anyone thinks they have a great Seven look into the Standard of Excellence Judging. You will still be able to display your with the other 7's once judged. Costs a little more to enter but you do get some great benifits. See you next month.
-
Nice to have you on board. I felt like I was getting trouble for letting the wife drive the 7 last year during our Tail event, maybe I was right. I have one up here in AL also if passing through. So are you in NJ/KY or FL most of the time. And don't forget a few of us are getting together in Carlisle, PA next month. That NJ 7 that is for sale should be there.
-
Bruce, I will be at Carlisle next month and try to bring photos etc of the 17. I may actually bring a frame from a very early soon to be restored DSK(ish) 7 along with my car.
-
The orginal Westfield XI from the early 80's actually was designed off a real 11 Chris Smith had in his yard. At the time it was to far gone to restore so the story goes he copied the frame and took the molds off the car. The 11 is also what got Chris Smith to start Westfield in 1982. They built 138 11 between 82-86, and of course just recently reintoduced them. There is a good book on the history of Westfield by Paul Robinshaw & Jeremy Buckley. Side note I am restoring his old Lotus 17 at work right now. (pictured on page 13 of the above book)

As a former Stalker/SuperStalker owner, it might actually be the best car for Hawaii. (check local laws etc for road use) All of the parts are off the shelf GM and would be available at your parts stores. With the others a lot of parts if damaged, broken , or just adifferent set-up would add to runing costs with shipping. I am not sure what the current cost of the car is (I had #19 so it was cheap) but I would think if you wanted to do the build yourself, kit with shipping would easily be under $20K, not sure what the upcharge for the parts required to finish would be. Check with those guys I am sure something could be worked out.

Having the privlege of 2 11's at work, I actually find them larger interior wise than my very early short cockpit Caterham. They even have a larger pedal box as the side pods are actually open to the interior of the car. I have always wanted an 11, will have to be a westie I don't think I will ever have the extra cash for a real one.

Rolled onto 23.073 this weekend (200 miles in 11 days, looking good). And I missed out on the 200 mile blat today. Oh and southwind my alloy is dusty, I have my right front wing underside covered in mud as the rear fender and pollen dust all over the spare. Not to metion all bugs on the windshield who have given their lives for me to have a good time. Quit poilishing and drive, you are making me look bad, with your great car.

Looks like PA is in your future. And don't forget the Lilyponds show is coming up at the end of April.... Congrats, hope it gets warm for you, Erin said it is cold up there, me on the other hand 50 or miles this weekend, would have been more but Dream Car Garage was filming and they had some nice cars... :7fume:

Amazing they didn't call a HazMat team. Must not of wanted to bother them on a holiday.
-
22,856, but I feel cheated I have put almost 500 miles on since moving her to Alabama 6 weeks ago. 23K in 30 years... When Erin and I bought this 18 months ago I had just over 20K. Lets see I will have the BRR in Sept for 800 miles, a 100+ mile drive in a 2 weeks, maybe if I drive to PA and Indy...
-
I am really close to doing the Alabama run with the Caterham (the Elan would be cheating right?)
-
as a former Stalker builder, I will say a Stalker is an exceptional car. The SuperStalker even more so. I sold mine during the build and never finished, I had an early chassis that I had converted to a SuperStalker configuration. I sold the unbuilt car with most components to finish the build less drivetrain, in trade for a nice Europa. Later sold for low-teens. I have always felt mid-20's for a well built SuperStalker pays what the builder has into it with a tad bit for the labor.

1993 de dion Caterham 1700cc crossflow for sale
sparecr replied to rick little's topic in Cars For Sale
When it rains it pours, right Tony? Tony had asked if I would let him know if I was ever selling my M100, he must of got your email about the same time I told him I was selling my M100. Same thing always happens to me also. Tony send me some info on your Elan, I am running in some big Lotus circles with my new job. -
New to Seven's, looking for a ride in middle Tennessee.

I can toss my hat in the ring if you are up for the 3 hour drive. No V8, nothing fancy just a Twin Cam Caterham maybe 130-140HP. (Remeber I am now in Birmingham) I can alos take you to a small building where you may be able to understand the logic behind -to add speed add lightness- If you do get to DC slngsht has your car.
