Tom - I have the same problem. No issue when driving on the street, but over pressurizes when I drive on track. Also no exhaust in the coolant, although I've only tested once.

I think that's about the extent of the similarities between my Crossflow and your Duratec. :)

Not sure of the best way to ping an individual....but I was trying to reach out to kitcat as Tom told me you had an issue with your donor Duratec.

I was at NJMP playing on lightning on Thursday and on the 4th session I felt the engine lose power and headed for the pits. I could hear it knocking and stripped it today and found the big end bearing in pot 1 was destroyed.

I'm running CR500 tires, so didn't expect oil starvation problems.

Is this a pre existing donor engine condition, or a fundamental problem and I need to fit a dry sump? Any thoughts?

Simon-I sent you a e-mail so check there. I originally thot you had a Duratec Birkin but I guess it is Caterham? Anyhow, my recommendation is to do an Accusump system on your replacement engine, which my Zetec powered Caterham uses.

Tom:

Will Karl (Blubarisax) be making a guest appearance at the event? He was an early supporter of the gathering and will be missed if he can't come for a day at least. And I for one, would be happy to sample some of his newly distilled firewater and give him some totally objective feed back on its quality:).

Mike, Karl said that he would try to make it down for a day. Guess it just depends on how busy he is. Hopefully, he'll make an appearance. I plan on taking a trip and visiting his new place soon. Tom

Oh my. Simon.. 700 miles on the car and already blew up an engine? Truly sorry to hear that. Will you be able to rebuild in time for the event ? I don't want to be the only red stripped r400 on the track!! Way too much attention.

Main trying to rally two to three other Caterhams / stalkers from Connecticut to come down and have fun with us (Neil, Paul, Steve... Yes talking about you). I need some help from you all to encourage them to come (and for Neil to rebuild his engine in time) We all know they ll have loads of fun.

I know Paul and Steve but Neil is a new name to me? Which part of CT is he in and what 7 is he running? :seeya:

Maybe a good idea to put an accusump kit on my maroon seven. Asking whoever runs one currently, what pieces are needed to install?

Mike,

Different car (obvioulsy  ) but a good starting point; parts/idea wise. Oh, Suave says hi:

Croc: You mite get a bigger response if you made the Accusump issue a separate thread? I suspect the recently blown Duratec is making track guys who aren't dry-sumped interested in this topic. As you mite recall, my Zetec Cat has an Accusump but I bought it with that installed. Beachman Racing did the install. Since they are also now a Caterham dealer, they should be able to make some suggestions. Mine was installed in the area where the passenger seat would ordinarily go, so finding a different location would make sense. I have seen them on the flat surface in the engine bay just in front of the passenger side cowl.

I'll definitely be running before the event one way or another.

Had long conversation with Raceline today. They are very certain that wet sump is bulletproof so long as oil level is maintained 5L (+ oil cooler and lines) and oil temperature NEVER exceeds 100C 212F.

I stupidly wasn't monitoring oil temp. Raceline also question the size of my oil cooler.

Temperature limit applies to dry or wet sump engines and comes from a ton of dyno experience.

Accusump looks interesting, I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet.

Interesting although it sounds quite defensive in tone.

Well oil temp has long been a concern of mine on the CSR but you fix that by selecting a suitable oil for the operating temperature range. I always exceed that temp level (212F) on track. Yet with discussions with Cosworth their view is so long as you use their oil spec you can happily go up to 230F. Duratecs always seem to run much higher oil temps than Zetecs as I don't recall ever exceeding 200F oil temp in one.

I don't recall R300 or R400 having oil coolers standard? Do they or is it a user determined extra?

A little defensive for sure but said they get 1 call a week during track season for this issue.

My R300 kit was supplied with an oil cooler, I wondered if Seb's R400 was supplied with a bigger cooler.

Your Cosworth engine has updated big end shells, I suppose they may be more heat tolerant, but everyone tells me oil selection is critical. I'm switching to Millers 10W-60. What do you use? I'm certainly still very nervous now!!

I am nervous too! Anytime there is an unexplained incident like this I am concerned. I use a Castrol Semi-Synthetic (Syntec) 5W50. Same as what Jon Nelson recommended and the weight is matching what Cosworth recommend. A full synthetic is also an option in the same weight.

I use 5W-50 Redline as that's what Karl was using. The other key of course it to make sure the oil is warmed up before wringing the crap out of the motor. I usually do 3-5 laps easy just to bring the oil temp up before I start to use the rev range. I did the same with my Kseries motor for almost 15 years without an issue. (knocking on wood as I say that). :smash:

Curious..

I believe I have a 10 or 13 row oil cooler from factory with my R400... pretty sure exactly the same supplied on the R300 model. I do run 5W50 Castrol as Jon Nelson suggested and so far so good (hope I did not jinxed myself). I never checked oil temperature although I noticed a drop in pressure (not too serious but noticeable) after a long track event (and I push the revs). I heard pretty standard with duratecs. I do have a cosworth dry sump though.. wonder if that helps keep oil pressure at a minimum protecting the engine

I'm coming down to it being user error on my side. The wet sump oil level is critical and I know now that I wasn't careful enough to determine a normal fill level when I built the car. So there's a reasonable chance the oil level was too low, a dry sump is of course far less sensitive. Also for hard track use I think the car needs better oil cooling. I'm going to install the Laminova water to oil cooler on the rebuild. Marginal oil levels and oil temperatures are a disaster waiting to happen. So my bad!
