escondidoron
Sometimes hard to believe this is Los Angeles. Hi Gert; It looks like you had a great time today. I hope you don't mind if I chime in here on your thread. I know what you mean. It was beautiful down in Escondido this morning as well. Today was the kind of cool, crisp and clear morning that only comes after the end of a winter storm. Whether in SoCal or the frozen north where I grew up. It's like the world has cleared its eyes after taking a cold shower. And the grass is bright green instead of the usual sunburnt golden brown! Similarly I went out for a drive this morning as well. But it was just a 10 minute trip from Escondido over to Rancho Santa Fe in the Evora to take in our little Cars & Coffee type event, Secret Car Club. It's just an informal gathering of 25 - 40 cars at a 4-way stop sign about 1/2 way to the beach in Del Mar. But today was really special, not just because of the weather, but because a drag racing legend showed up with his grandson in his old red A-V8 hot rod. Here's a pic of my friend Peter's Seven from today: And a link to a few pics that I took this morning: Secret Car Club Rancho Santa Fe, California Saturday 14 January 2017 BTW: I'm finally moving forward with a new engine for my old Seven. After our last drive together back in May I broke a piston ring land up near Taft. The block is out at the machine shop now. I hope to be back up and running by April. I'm looking forward to another drive with you when I have it complete.

MichaelD
I bet this LARGE wind wings help minimize the cold air coming in. Did you make them?
slomove
I bet this LARGE wind wings help minimize the cold air coming in. Did you make them? Yes, I made a first version some 12 years ago. They are more half-doors than wind deflectors and cut out the buffeting almost completely. Together with the sun-roof it is also a good rain protection and key to comfortable touring. I had posted the story of the second improved version (including a failed attempt), what worked and some detail pics including the gullwing swivel here Edited January 15, 2017 by slomove

slomove
Beautiful pictures. Is this Glendora Ridge Road? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Yes it is. I was surprised the road was in good condition after the storm. Just a few rocks and many bicyclists on the pavement.
Kitcat
Slomove: What a shot! Hard to believe it is so close to a such a major population center. Escondidoron: Great cars. I esp like the color combo of your Evora, one of my fav auto shapes to begin with and the color really helps it stand out. The original 7 isn't bad either, love the wheels! slomove
...Hard to believe it is so close to a such a major population center..... Sometimes I find it hard to believe myself. There are fabulous roads here in the mountains up to 7500' altitude. Glendora Ridge Road is only 40 minutes from my home: http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=12137&stc=
mca
Glendora Mountain and Glendora Ridge are 2 of my favorite roads. GMR. Is tighter with more traffic, while GRR has easier flowing turns. I had my Elise up there a few weeks ago and can't wait to go back. I'll be back once in fix my own piston ring issues... mca
Gert, do you have any other "lesser known" road recommendations in the Nearby mountains? I'm in Huntington Beach now but I grew up driving the roads in the San Gabriel Mountains. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
slomove
Gert, do you have any other "lesser known" road recommendations in the Nearby mountains? I'm in Huntington Beach now but I grew up driving the roads in the San Gabriel Mountains.. If you are from the area you may know most or all of them already. - My local favorites are the Little Tujunga Canyon, various canyon roads in the Malibu area and during the week even Angeles Crest Hwy. - Little further away San Francisquito and Bouqet Canyon Roads, Lockwood Valley Road/Hwy33, Cerro Noroestre and Tepusquet Canyon Rd. - Even further away Hemet-Idyllwild-Banning, Hwy38 to Big Bear, Mt Palomar Road, Mesa Grande, Sunrise Hwy, Hwy 58, Pozo Road, Naciemento-Ferguson Rd., Caliente Bodfish Rd. - More fabulous roads in the mountains of NorCal of course. - Best of all: Beartooth Highway. Not exactly local ;-)
jimrankin
Thanks for the photo link! The shots of the supercharged flathead with four one barrel carbs made my day. Saw a couple of them at the drags back in the '60's and even though OHV motors blew them away they looked and sounded sooooo much cooler ;-)! escondidoron
............The shots of the supercharged flathead with four one barrel carbs made my day. Saw a couple of them at the drags back in the '60's and even though OHV motors blew them away they looked and sounded sooooo much cooler ;-)! Yeah; that car is pretty sweet. It looks like it's ready to head out to El Mirage for a run right now. I was in love with those four old Stromberg carb's. And you're right, that blown flat motor sure sounds good! During my conversation with the owner he told me that particular engine was put together by his buddy, none other than Ed Pink: http://image.hotrod.com/f/10301766+w660+h495+cr1/0509_hrdp_01_z%2Bed_pink_racing_engines%2Bpose.jpg You might want to take a closer look at the guy who was driving that car. He lives nearby and his shop is only a couple of miles from our gathering place. Here he is in conversation with an aging Seven owner: If you have ever been into NHRA top fuel drag racing, read Hot Rod Magazine (or similar) or maybe played with Hot Wheels as a kid, you might just recognize the driver of that red Model A-V8. Lonnie-S
Nice photos, Ron. I'm surprised everyone is having trouble recognizing the driver of that hot rod. Since I know, I'll just add a hint and not spoil the game. His first name is Don. Cheers,

JohnCh
I'm not sure why you are trying to draw attention to the driver of the hot rod. I'm familiar with him, and that guy is a snake... Oh, and second the kudos on your photos. -John
Shoe String Racing
Nice pic.:hurray:.......but obviously photoshopped; I mean, seriously, where's the traffic??? I saw the road like that when I drove it regularly..............47 years ago. anyway, glad you found some space and had a fantastic scenery shot.
