Lucky-7
Congrats Kenny, glad it was a defective relay and didn't involve a miswired or defective harness. You've made great progress, keep it up! Thanks! I'll hit it again tomorrow. The weather is starting to break again and iI needed a little break to gather my thoughts anyway. Just a thought on attaching the front wings. I used Bigheads and zip ties to attach my front wings, rock solid and easy to take off if you need to. Just got my delivery of Bigheads as well, waiting on actual new wings to appear to replace the bolted in ones now. Were a little hard to source but thats my plan. What did you end up using for bonding? Sikaflex 292? or Sikaflex 221 or the 3m stuff? Where did you guys source the big heads from? I've read about them on some build blogs maybe I'll give them some thought. Any links? I have some professional grade epoxy they use for panel bonding in body shops. I'm sure any of you guys could "con" some off of a body guy in trade for a ride! Bit unfair there Tom, Lucky-7 is probably a much better driver than you and won’t hit cones....or rocks...[emoji14] I'm not so sure about that! But I'm not planning on doing any track time... for now anyway.... rocks... probably lol Sometimes it's not a cone. Sometimes it's a tire carcass jumping in front of you on a very dark section of freeway at 5:30am. http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=15150&stc=1 -John It happened just north of San Francisco on the way back from USA2005. I hit the carcass with the left front, it then shot up along the tub (look closely and you can the rubber marks), hit the polycarbonate wind deflector, then down to the rear wing. Without the deflector, or if that was just made from plexiglass, it would have been a head or shoulder hit at over 70mph. i.e. it wouldn't have ended well... -John OUCH! Glad you're ok! Brightonuk
I used Flex Glue (it is one of those as seen on tv products) to hold them, let that set then used a small square of fiberglass over each one These are my track day GRP fenders so I did not bother to make them pretty. But is you want these attached for good glass fiber is the way to go http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=15154&stc=1 Edited March 20, 2019 by Brightonuk
wemtd
I ordered bigheads from a fibreglass supplier in the UK as I couldn’t find them anywhere domestically at the time. Make sure you order extras! So far they work great http://www.ecfibreglasssupplies.co.uk Edited March 20, 2019 by wemtd
Taber10
I can think of a few forum members who hit deer. Then there was Taber who went bear hunting one day.....[emoji15] I had both front fenders replaced, and the right front fender support, along with both headlamps, nose cone, radiator, etc. etc. But, for the record, the wife STILL insists that the bear was hunting us, as he ran into us--in her description of the incident. Lucky-7
I haven't gotten to much done on the car lately, came down with the flu and screwed up my plans for this weekend. I managed to get a hold of Hagerty for insurance, I have 6 other cars with them, so I figure they will do pretty good for me. They said they can't insure it until its completed and they will need pictures of the car and the VIN in the engine compartment. No big deal I can wait. I mounted the left rear fender, what a pain.... only half of the predrilled holes lined up! I had to dremel the ones that didn't a tad, so as not to take a chance on cracking the fender by forcing them to line up. I'm going to mount the right one loosely also, then put the rubber body filler seams after. I have the cycle wings all ready for gluing, I mounted the repeaters, ran the wires up through the struts attached the ground wires and tested good! http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=15164&stc=1 http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=15165&stc=1 http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=15166&stc=1 http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=15167&stc=1 Edited March 25, 2019 by Lucky-
yellowss7
Almost there! What's your total hour count at? I think you are way ahead of my 80 hours.
Lucky-7
Looks like 71. Lots of fiddly stuff from here on. I think your build time is safe! I admire you for that. It's really a lot of fun but a lot of work too. Sometimes one step forward, two back. There's only a fifty-fifty shot at putting the e-brake wire on the correct terminal on the micro switch. Of course the guide doesn't tell you. Found out after I had the tunnel top on... of course I chose poorly! So it was either pull the seats back out, loosen the cables again, remove the shift knob, pull tunnel cove off, or spend an hour working your hand thru a two inch slot and scraping the back of your hand raw to make the wire switch.. my hand is still sore. :smilielol5 Today putting on the tail lights, got the wires thru the fender grommets, all connectors plugged in. Turn on the lights.... left side super bright, right side normal. Hit brakes, right side super bright, left side dim. Get out power probe, test wires to the tail lights. Everything good there, somewhere in the left side harness two wires are crossed. Take apart connectors, move wires around and presto. Lose another hour. Oh well all in a day's work... still loving it though! Kenny
yellowss7
I thought that there was a hole on the side of the tunnel in the passenger side where you could access the reverse switch??? Funny that you mention the problem with the tail lights. On my Orange car, had a similar problem, Same result, two wires were pinned wrong in the plug. Must be an dyslecsic Englishman doing the wiring or just a hold over LUCAS curse.
Lucky-7
You may be able to access the reverse switch, but this is the e-brake switch. Besides I would've had to peel off the carpet that I just put on. And you'd have to have baby hands. LOL. That's funny you had the same issue! Must be at the other end somewhere because the colors of the wires on both sides of the plugs were correct. Oh well!
wemtd
Crossed wires??? Sounds about right. I sometimes wonder if some of these things are intentionally done so we can have the full experience putting these puzzles together?

Lucky-7
Almost there! What's your total hour count at? I think you are way ahead of my 80 hours. I went thru my notes and I'm wrong. After the work I completed yesterday, putting on the stone guards, and some taping of the games under the hood, I'm up to 84 hrs. The only thing I've got left to do on the car is glue the cycle wings down and the carpet in the boot. Then of to get the enhanced inspection. I see you're from SE PA, I'm up Wellsboro. We're are you located? How did you title and register your car? Looks like mine wil have Special Constructed title. Not sure yet. Do you have any insight? yellowss7
I'm in the Philly suburbs. Mine is registered as a Special Construction Vehicle. Back when I did it, you could go to any inspection site but they changed that to require you to go to one of the Special Construction approved sites to get it inspected. Then you have to send pictures along with the inspection report/sticker to get your registration. Mine was done, 19 years ago, so I don't know how today's process has evolved. My Car is insured as a 2000 Caterham. But my title says SCV. They issued a new Id plated at the time of registration. Pay attention to the Bumper requirement, I think they changed it to accommodate cars that didn't have them originally, but don't quote me on that. Do your research. Good Luck. Lucky-7
Should be no problem. This is from the inspection handbook: Check the bumpers and REJECT IF one or more of the following apply: (i) The bumper, if required as original equipment, is not on the vehicle. The place where I'm taking it does Enhanced Vehicle Inspection. Required for new construction or rebuilding of salvage vehicles. They are customers of mine and they are a notary service so they can handle all the titling paperwork as well. I've been talking with them all along and they've recently inspected a Cobra kit with no issues. And I found this from the specially constructed vehicle inspection: Bumpers - A vehicle specified under this subchapter shall be equipped with front and rear bumpers securely attached to the chassis, except when the original body configuration provided by a recognized manufacturer did not include bumpers in the design of the vehicle. yellowss7
That's good news on both ends, that you are going to a friendly inspection site and that they modified the bumper language. When mine was done it required them. I guess I didn't tape them on well enough as they have seem to fallen off. :smilielol5:
bball7754
You were probably planning on this anyway, but bringing a Lotus 7 book, or something similar, to the registration to prove they never had bumpers might be a good idea. Steve
Lucky-7
I've shown them pictures of the build all along and finished ones from Google even when I first told them I bought a component car to build a year and a half ago. I'm pretty sure it won't be an issue. Fingers crossed...lol Kenny
