JohnCh Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 (edited) Two unused sets of Caterham four-point harnesses as supplied new with my 420R kit. Included hardware is missing a few standard washers, 3 of 4 shoulder bolts, and 1 lap belt bolt. All other fasteners, including the more difficult to acquire locally swivel inserts, wavy washers, and fiber washers are included. These belts are not supplied from the factory with date codes. Current factory price excluding VAT is 469 GBP for the pair, or $574 at today's exchange rate. Asking $450 $300 https://caterhamparts.co.uk/seatbelts-harnesses/7525-seatbelt-4-point-quick-release.html -John Edited June 8, 2024 by JohnCh Price reduced
JohnCh Posted June 8, 2024 Author Posted June 8, 2024 Giving this a bump and a big price reduction. Between a price increase and a less favorable exchange rate, these are now $614 from the factory. My new price is less than half that: $300 + shipping. -John
Mark IV Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 John, We are almost giving away Cat parts and yet, crickets?
JohnCh Posted June 9, 2024 Author Posted June 9, 2024 To save me the effort of replying to any more scammers who join the forum just to contact me about the belts, these are available only to forum members in good standing. 1
theDreamer Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 I’d love to have them for my car but the wife says NO! The shoulder straps in “our” car have had the Caterham panels removed. But, we have them and she is clear that these can be sewn back on. She also points out that our faded belts are the originals that came with this car and have the red cam lock hubs. I tried to point out how much better your brand spanking new ones would look especially the black hubs with the Caterham 7 logos. NOPE, she won’t budge. As I have a long wish list and who knows what maintenance issues we may encounter I’ve decided to let her win this battle. Sorry
JohnCh Posted June 9, 2024 Author Posted June 9, 2024 Have you explained to her that as the webbing ages, the material becomes less effective, and these new belts are much safer? That's why the FIA requires a date tag and requires new belts every 5 years. Hmm...given the safety aspect, perhaps I should increase the price?
Croc Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 Belts or a new cashmere throw rug for the sofa? Difficult choice.....for someone......
panamericano Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 Even for totally street driven cars, people never think about belts aging. When I got the Birkin (25+ years old) with 3 point belts, the first thing I did was replace them. Old is old and dry and maybe stretched. Don't need um till you need um. 1
MV8 Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 I recently tested a 28 year old, econobox (2235# with me onboard) oem nylon belt (not fia or sfi) and it held adequately (car totaled, bag did not deploy). It should be noted that older oem belts with bags have a "rip stitch" folded loop to eliminate peak loads on the body at the belt, relying on the bag. Newer oem vehicles have "smart" tensioners. I expect FIA polyester to provide some give under peak forces where nylon SFI or oem may not. FIA would be a good idea for road use and more likely to be needed imho.

In case anyone was wondering if it's okay to post on someone's for sale ad that you recently sold the same item for less than their asking price, the answer is it's not. As per the guidelines, if you don't like the price, send a PM. In this case, someone already agreed to buy the belts this morning at the $300 asking price, but now I feel like an ass taking that amount after this post. Given it' a small community and I was trying to price these for friendly deal to a member, I've told him to send $250 instead.
KnifeySpoony Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 I don't think you should feel bad at all. My sale was in 2022 and new price may (probably) went up a bit. It's certainly in the ballpark. My post was largely in response to the comment about "giving" them away. Perhaps I should've quoted that post. My bad. My only point was that it is indeed a small market and secondhand parts do drop in value a lot, even if unused.
