Insurance Coverage

Recommended Posts

I have placed an order for a Birkin kit and tentatively planning on picking it up with my enclosed trailer. Because it is a kit, my insurance company as well as a number of other insurance companies my insurance broker has tried will not insure the kit while it's apart. My concern is the two or three nites while traveling and  while on the road with an uninsured kit car. Has anyone been able to find a solution to this issue?  Thanks

I did the same thing in 2015. I arranged to pick up an enclosed U-Haul trailer close to Vail on the way over (from LA). I think U-Haul offered "contents" insurance by the day. That along with "creative" parking at night got me home without any trouble. Try posting your route home on this forum and maybe you can get some secure parking for the couple of nights needed. As I recall, I parked the first night across from the police station in Glenwood Springs. The next night I was able to back the rig in under the ramp in the parking garage of the Marriott we stayed in in Las Vegas (I was a frequent visitor for work for a number of years and knew the bellman). Next night home. I would be more worried about the trailer being stolen as the contents will be a chassis sitting on the floor filled with boxes of parts, none of which are readily marketable. All U-Haul trailers have a tracker built in now. Good luck. Tom's a great guy.

Your broker wasn't able to get a specialty insurance to cover? It doesn't have a VIN yet? Or the VIN isn't in North American systems until they give you an MSO?

I bought a used car (so it had a VIN, just not in NA systems), and hagerty was able to insure.

You try insuring it as a vehicle and not as a kit?

Just a thought....will your homeowner policy cover it?

same as theft from your car   at that point it's "stuff", not a "vehicle"

HO policy covered stolen trailer for a friend

My agent checked with my homeowners policy and because its car parts its not covered. My car insurance won't cove it because it's car parts. Once it's built I can get it insuranced. Thanks for the input.

Hagerty covered my car with just a 3 digit chassis ID #.  They also have policies for cars under restoration or storage, so... it's a free call.

Good luck.  Or go naked and just worry; be paranoid; uptight; scared...

Hagerty used to have kit insurance and trailer contents insurance but I guess that is no longer around?

Once the kit is at home, you should itemize it on your home contents policy, just like any individual valuable item (jewellry, watches, antiques, etc).  I know for certain that the Chubb Insurance Masterpiece personal lines product will do that.

For the transport home, ask your broker about cargo insurance.  Cargo does not need to be in a truck to be covered.  The issue is that it may be too small a value to justify anyone doing it.  But I would have thought any good broker would have something standardized on the shelf that would work.
