Now available: new high level indicator + brake lights!

Recommended Posts

Hello 7 community. We’d like to introduce CaterLED: a high level, integrated brake, indicator, and running light system designed for Caterhams and 7's.

As part of my 13 year old son’s entrepreneur class we decided to help improve the visibility of our cars. As you all know we are quite exposed so anything to enhance visibility and safety is a bonus.

Unlike most other solutions, CaterLED lights are completely plug and play into your existing Caterham wiring system. Installation takes only 10-15 minutes. The kit comes with everything you need to install and fasten the lights and cables. The only tool you should need is a screwdriver. Even if you have no technical or electrical skills you can install these yourself. We went through a dozen or so different prototypes and designs until we found the perfect design snd we are thrilled with the result.

This has been a great project for my son to learn lots of new skills such as business plan writing, sourcing parts, assembling, soldering, testing, packing, shipping, costing, logo design, payments and more. If the community responds well and this is a longer term project then he’ll look at building a website for ordering with direct payment, Instagram and Facebook pages, and more. A fantastic learning experience!

Pricing is: £99/pair, €119/pair, US$129/pair, CA$139/pair (for domestic orders), and CA$175/pair for other international orders, including shipping from our home in Canada to your door. The kit includes everything you need to install the lights. Since we are not a business we don't anticipate any duties as we'll mark the package low value.

If you need a LED Flasher Relay, we will provide those at £10ea, €12.ea, US$13ea, CA$15ea or you can source your own relay: CF14 JL02.

Based on our research these should fit nearly all Caterham models in the S3 and SV range. (We have not verified S2 and S4 due to lower number of cars, but if you have an S2 or S4 contact us directly). These should also fit other 7’s such as Westfield, Birkin, Locost etc. Please contact us for help before ordering if you have one as we may need to give you bare wires ends.

Please read our FAQs to learn more about the different models we are offering based on the connectors you have on your car to ensure proper fitment.

You can also customize the lighting if you do not want the indicators activated. You can specify your lights to have either:

  1. Brake, running, and indicators
  2. Brake and running only
  3. Brake and indicators only
  4. Indicators only
  5. Brake only

You can also specify your lights to omit the running/main light functionality and only act as a 3rd brake light + indicators.

Installation instructions are here.

He is now taking preorders so he can order all the components and start making them for you over the coming weeks or months. To facilitate this please complete this Order Form:

Thank you,

UPDATE #1: to clarify, the running lights only come on when the headlight switch is in the middle or full ON position, not when in the OFF position (on my car - it's a 2005). We have also made this an option in the order form if you want to remove the running/main lights all together.

UPDATE #2: We are now offering a Bare Wire version for older cars with bullet or other connectors. You just need to install your own connector to each wire.

Dang these are genius. If I didn't have an older harness without these plugs I'd be all over this. Should be a pinned topic.

Thanks. I'm assuming you have the bullet connectors then? We are going to look into making it work with those. It should be very easy. In the short term we can send you a set without the plug - just 1/2 inch of bare wire and you simply put on your own bullets.

Actually, my 1991 car seems not to have any connectors at all.  I had to cut the wires to remove my fenders for painting.  Well, I didn't have to cut the ground wires, as they were held to the lights with nuts.

wow, that's interesting. I haven't seen that before. But then again Caterhams are strange beasts. Lots of odd things happen to them over their lifetime.

If you are interested in a set of lights I'm sure we can make it work somehow. It's not rocket science to get wires to connect. It just might be a bit more work. Depending on how much you like "projects" :)

This car was ordered as a Complete Kit from the Caterham factory in 1991 by a person in England.  I assume that it was assembled by owner.  The car was imported about a year and a half ago along with three other Caterham cars by a person in central Illinois. I got the impression that the American did not make changes to it.  The car seems to have lived in Northwich (not Norwich, near where Lotus cars are still made).

There seems to be a lot of interest in this setup on BlatChat, so thought I'd give this a bump. If you don't have a high-level brake light, you should.  And if you want something plug and play, this seems a worthwhile option to consider.

I ordered mine and am eagerly awaiting delivery. Hopefully in the next couple of days. Will update the group when I install.

This is a very well put together kit and definitely worth the price! I installed mine a few weekends back and they look great. Plenty of zip ties and sticky cable mounts provided. The install was extremely simple, basically plug & play. It took more time to remove the floor of my boot than it did to actually install the lights. Thanks again Dave & Nic. Well done.

Well. Finally got around to putting the 3rd brake lights on. (I have been driving the car too much to take the time to do anything major).

simple install as promised. I ended up not pulling the floor so just undid the outermost screw on the wooden floor section and pushed it up to allow for the led to pass thru.  Re tacked the carpet down. I ran the vertical wire on the outside of the carpet (since my side carpets are trapped in the flooring ). Maybe I will change this over the winter. Or just run some Velcro strip down over the wire so nothing in the boot snags it.

all in all very happy.

In the interest of not ripping apart all my boot carpet and flooring to route the wires behind the carpet I just ran them over. Worried about snagging on stuff I thought about Velcro to cover it (easily comes off the carpet but is very secure). Not really a huge deal to put it behind but for any of you who want to hide a wire run over the boot carpet. This worked well.

I stuck the tape back to back so the soft side faced out and matched the carpet pretty well.

@CBuff it looks great! I'm glad they worked out.

We have a few lights in stock and have lots of parts to make more if anyone wants a nice and easy winter project, or a stocking stuffer :)
