Never titled. Never really run. <300 miles on it.

As Croc has stated, start by calling the special titles division on State Street in Trenton 609-292-6500- ext 5064 and ask for the "kit car package", follow the package carefully, and you'll be good to go, and emissions exempt. Sadly, the Morristown, NJ special inspection station was wiped out by Hurricane Sandy, so you are stuck going to Asbury Park, which I've been told, can be hit and miss with approvals depending on what type of day the inspector assigned to your car is having. Yes, really.

I have the kit car package and I've started compiling all the information into one well organized file. Need some paperwork from Tom to complete the package. I'll take a swing at NJ DMV and see how I get on.

I totally believe you about it depending on the inspector. NJ DMV are consistently inconsistent!

Before moving out of state, I must have brought 2 dozen kit cars through the process, a dozen of them mine, and the rest helping out friends. After my 2nd one going through the same year, the inspectors got to know me, and my slightly anal attention to the tiny details. Even allowed me to stay inside with the car during the inspections after that. Only once did they find something I missed (mounting clip for the brake line vibrated loose, the clip was there, but the stainless steel screw that was holding it in place was gone. Over the course of 5 more years, they never let me forget this.

Since we moved out prior to Sandy, I can't say I've ever had direct contact with anyone in Asbury Park. Might want to reach out to some of the Factory Five (thefactoryfiveforum dot com) guys to hear their thoughts on the process these days.

Hello everyone! New here; just introducing myself. I had the opportunity to (with the help of my bank) purchase a 1993 Caterham Super Seven HPC... and jumped at the chance to own my "attainable dream car." I have a blog I started in the hopes of documenting my adventures with this thing, and have a lot more info and photos there (link here and below). It joins my two other cars (an '08 Ford Ranger, and a '15 Subaru BRZ), and I plan on driving the crap out of it every chance I get... when the weather permits, given that I live in the Chicagoland area and it's starting to get rather chilly...

Either way, wanted to say hi! I look forward to learning about the platform as I slowly work to fix up a few minor things here-and-there.

Nice find, sweet looking ride. We seem to have similar tastes. It was a test drive in an HPC in the mid 90’s that convinced me I didn’t want an original Lotus 7. I came close to getting a Caterham several times however, something messed up the deal and each fell apart. My summer fun car for the last 5 years has been a black with red accents 2018 BRZ tS. With the wife selling her STi, (that I used as my winter beater) looks like I’ll be driving my BRZ this winter. :classic_ohmy:

Heh! The girlfriend's daily is a 2016 STi. She isn't getting rid of it, but is hoping to park a Supra next to it next year if all goes to plan.

My BRZ was my year-round daily for 8-ish years until I acquired the Ranger a year-or-so ago, including many Chicago winters. She's done everything from autocross, to ice racing up on the frozen Wisconsin lakes. I basically took it out in every major snow storm and had a blast. Dedicated winter tires are borderline magic. Even lowered, and with a front lip, I never once got stuck anywhere.

Currently at 121,000 miles. Just got new coilovers (RCE Tarmac2s) and a complete front end suspension refresh (I tend to go overkill when I do that stuff, so she got a brand new steering rack, new control arms, knuckles, hubs, etc...) Was going to do the rear end next until I suddenly bought the Caterham, lol. If you're in any of the Toyobaru Facebook groups, you might know me as either the guy who makes the custom switch panels, or the guy with the train horn in his BRZ :classic_laugh:

What is a "beater"?

Just kidding; former Chicagoan who left after the '78 blizzard and never dealt with another rusty bolt again.

(I'm a geezer, so I can brag a bit...)

Ha! I've actually been pleasantly surprised by the BRZ. Maybe it's the fact that it's garaged when it isn't being driven, or the fact that I try to wash it at least once a week in the winter, but even though it gets absolutely COVERED in salt every winter, it's been surprisingly resilient to rust issues. There is one set of bolts holding one underbody panel on that for some reason are made out of the most rust-prone material known to man, but other than those 10 bolts, you wouldn't really know this is a salt-life car looking under it! Which is wild given the insane amount of salt they use here...

I'm on the FT86 Forum, Stephen W. The wife's was also a 2016. I've had a 2006 STi and two (well really only one, long story) BRZ's. She had a 2011 STi Hatchback as well and now is on her second Crossteck. First was a 2022 Limited which she just traded in for a 2024 Wilderness. Sorry for getting off topic but, car guys are car guys! :classic_wink:

Hello all,

I've been a lurker on this forum for many years and have been fascinated with Sevens for the last 40.

Over the years I owned and still own (1999 XJR, 1972 Lotus Europa)  many British Sports cars of the 1950s and 60s.

My obsession started in the 1980s with one Morgan after the other (3 in total), followed by a 1961 E-Type, Coupe and a variety of Healeys, Triumphs, MGs and real Minis.

Back in the mid eighties I had a chance to sit in a Lotus Seven, I think it was a S2 with a Twinc, the first time and must have gotten infected for life.

Fast Forward 40+ years and I am finally the proud owner of my first Seven.

It's a 1999 Caterham S3, Live Axle with a 1700 Super Sprint.

The car is a one owner vehicle with only 6500 miles on the clock, but sadly was sitting for quite a while.

It took a big leap of faith when I bought it, because the original owner had passed away and his son couldn't provide much information in regard to the engine.

Since the car had a carb. fire at one time I thought it would be prudent to pull the head and dig a little deeper.

Lucky me, it turned out to be an original 1700 Super Sprint and after digging even deeper, one with an AX block.

Thanks to Josh Robbins (RMC) and Pete Christensen (TPE) I am well on my way (wishful thinking) to get my new possession back on the road.

Hope to see one of you guys in the Rockies, one of these days!

Congratulations on making the dream live.  I have fond memories of my driving trips in Northern New Mexico - its a nice part of the world to have a seven in.

I grew up in Southern California and lived for many years in Northern Cali before moving to Florida. Having only spent 3 years of my life in snowy areas, I am amazed at how optimistic you are about all of the salt you are having to experience. I get a sick feeling when I think about the undercarriage. OTOH, these cars are meant for driving and I am quite impressed with your zest for life and unwillingness to let the elements slow you down. Good show and good luck with your new se7ven!

Well, I’ve finally gone and done it. I’ve acquired a 1983 Caterham 1600 BDR, factory built, based in RI. Like many of you, my journey started with the Prisoner series, and it’s been a long road trying to find the right one. I’ve bid on a variety of cars over time, mostly projects. This one is well sorted and a hoot to drive. I need to figure out a few things, so I’d love to connect with anyone running a BDR. I’ll get a few pictures posted soon.

A BDR? You lucky dog. Exciter to see more of it.

I'm in the Newport area 6x a year or so. Should be more but I'm working on my fueling. When I'm in town I'll send you a note, would be nice to get 2 together and do CT 49 or up through scituate. I can also come up and help out, as RI is pretty small. Welcome!
