Anybody know what glue holds the Caterham side mirrors in place?

Hi

 

Anybody know what the flexible glue is that holds the glass mirrors in place? As part of the build you pry out the mirror then attach the side fitting and then re-assemble. Following day I returned to the car and mirror was on floor in pieces. Note* don't order new mirror(s) ... they are $80 a pop plus shipping. Went to local glass/mirror shop they cut me 2 new ones for $11 ... a bargain! But I digress, ... the glue is on two of the plastic posts and its texture ... how do I describe it? ... it's like the best booger you ever picked out your nose

This can't be right.  Glue?

Mirrors usually have socket cups to attach to the housing.  This is a hack job.  

 

What glue was used?

Often, the quality and technique of the surface prep is the determining factor for any glue to work.

 

Try this.

Get a roll of adhesive backed Velcro and a block of foam.  Cut the foam to be a pedestal to attach the mirror to and to the middle of the housing.  Velcro front an back of foam block.

It is possible that hot glue from a glue gun has been used due to the 'string' across the plastic surface.  If the glass is not attached quick enough and the glue is left to cool, the holding strength is diminished.  Hot glue looks like the above, and don't touch it when it is hot, as it does cause painful burns.  It can be removed easily with isopropyl alcohol (an original fix from the great Norm Abrams on the PBS programme 'This Old House'). W

I have a tube of flexible cement that never hardens fully. I kind of think they'd use silicone though. I also agree that it's a pretty chintzy mirror!

Went with SPA mirrors plus the uberniche door hinge / integrated mount.

 

Put a rubber grommet in between the ball and the tightening screw on the mount. Mirror is going to outlive the car.

 

If you don't replace. Liquid Nails and send it.
