yellowss7
Brad, FTD and this year so far PAX too, have been taken by Fmod F500's. A few other Nationally ranked drivers also have bested me raw time. Last year when I let one of the top drivers drive it, he set the FTD on an instructor run, first time out. The car is very capable, the current driver is still behind the learning curve. Or so I've heard, but it seems logical. Eh, Wrong. Even with just the street Avon CR500's on, I still get a ton of grit thrown up and into the car. With the sticky wide slicks, the amount of stuff that enters the car is tremendous. A helmet with a full shield is highly recommended. I don't know how bad it gets with cycle wings. yellowss7
Sorry, I was just commenting that a ton of stuff still gets in with clams.
DemoKnight
Great information guys! I'm definitely not waiting till I'm 44 to get one! I just finished school and the 7 is top on my list on things to buy! I'm almost 100% sold on the SV with a few options. Now i just gotta find a dealer I can trust. A silly question for you guys tough. For wear items like tie rod ends and ball joints and what nots, how do I go about getting replacements? I mean i don't think i can walk into a local autozone and get them....or can I? Also for the dash I see alot of different kinds i'm assuming there are many options for the inside? or are there tons of one off custom jobs? yellowss7
The standard Caterham dash layout is available in either leather/pleather, or you can order a Carbon dash. If you splurge for a Stack dash cluster then you probably will also do it in carbon. I think caterham sell a blank dash and I know that Carbon Bits.com sell both blank and custom carbon dashes. The Caterham kit comes wired with the dash and gauges in place. IMO, you assemble a Caterham, the guys that build Locosts, really do Build them. yellowss7
WOW Martin. :flag: I salute you. That's an amazing documentary. Mine came skinned, painted, dash wired, fuel tank plumbed. All I really did was assemble the suspension, drop in the engine, gearbox, and diff. and add lights, seats, rollbar, seat belts and front and rear wings and windscreen. Done. slngsht
If you don't know about cycle wings, then how can you say "Wrong"? I've had clams, cycles, and nothing at all. All provide minimal support in terms of protection from pebbles. Open tires are just badazz... I won't be putting any fenders back on the front. Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me, but I got just as many pebbles with the wings/clams as without.
DemoKnight
I do want to spend money on the dash, carbon and a stack, I really like this one http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/SPK8000LG/CTH-01.jpg even the tranny tunnel and all. I'm assuming all custom or can I order the "leet" dash from the dealer? hahaha
MHKflyer52
Thanks Tom. That means a lot coming from someone like you. When I started building my car I decided to mark the calander in my shop and when I was finished I counted the number of marks which actualy took two calanders (18 months) and found that I actually had 89 days marked off in that 18 month time frame. If I worked on it for 5 min I marked the calander and counted it as a day, their were a lot of days that I never had the time to work on it after the first week due to starting and running a new business that I had just started and built up also during that time and which I have since sold. I know it seems hard to belive but my basic frame only took 19 hours to put together and have sitting on the shop floor, the only way I know this is I ordered the steel on a Monday and it arived at my shop on Wednesday at 7am and at about 1145 pm that Wednesday my wife came into the shop to ask me if I was coming home or spending the night at the shop, neadless to say I went home and the next day about noon I actually took the photos of the frame on the shop floor. Things that I purchased: Nose cone, Gas tank, Two seats and of course the small stuf like lights and switches. Used an MGB for the engine and trans and front and rear breaks but built everything else in my shop by hand.
Kitcat
I have clams and race tires and get debris but not a lot. Even with clams, the front wheel width is limited. I run Toyo RA1's on my 15" wheels and with a 205 width they rubbed the clam brace under load in turns. We bent the brace back but the space is limited. Of course you could add wheel spacers and solve the rubbing problem but that throws the suspension geometry off a bit. Slngsht- Running with no fenders in the rain wld be interesting. Let us know how you fare.
slngsht
Slngsht- Running with no fenders in the rain wld be interesting. Let us know how you fare. Been there, done that :yesnod: At 15 MPH, while turning, you get a nice shower. Otherwise, the rooster tails go straight and don't bother you too much, or if you're turning, they go mostly over your head. I have driven a total of 10 minutes in the rain in 3 years of ownership, so I don't worry about what happens in that case. Rocks are a bigger concern. I think the guys who go with truly fat tires run 13 inchers...maybe that solves the clearance issue.
RGTorque
i have cycle fender on my 7 . i am running a 235/40/17 tire up front now and i dont get much stones in the car when driving or turning. the only way objects get into the car is when they get kicked up , bounce off the ground, hit the rear fender and drop in your lap. and this is coming from a guy with with no real front windshield. http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/9246/cimg1671wr1.jpg http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/6164/cimg1670qi7.jpg
JohnCh
I’ve had clams and cycle fenders. With regard to debris, the clams work much better than standard cycle fenders, but cycle fenders with mud flaps work a bit better than clams. -John
Boxologist
with cycle fenders i got hit with a tree branch that was about an inch and half in diameter. from teh passenger side.:ack: the 13" tyres are an inch shorter in overall diameter than 15" tyres.
