List your projects for the winter modding season

With winter modding season almost upon us, I've started my list:

1. First and foremost, new hood, cowl, windshield: Planning to modify my old hood with a hood scoop, fab a new curved cowl, and do something for a windshield.

2. New front Aarms. I still have the temporary Aarms I fabbed up to get the car to the dragon in '07. They are asymmetrical (one leg of the A is straight) and rub against the wheel if I turn too sharply, like while parking.

--------------EVERYTHING BELOW THIS LINE IS OPTIONAL :D --------

3. IRS. I have a Jag rear sitting in the garage already. Idea is to improve ride quality. It has inboard brakes, so it should really lighten the unsprung weight back there.

4. [cough] power steering [/cough]. With the 1750lb curb weight, and beefy 275's in the front, steering effort is high at parking lot speeds. I'm going with an electric power assisted steering (i.e. no hydraulics). The final product should have a knob on the dash to adjust steering effort (0 assist to max assist). We'll see how that goes.

5. Better looking rear fenders

6. Different seats

7. Rear deck lid

Took mine out and got it's State inspection done today. Good for another year.

I Think I'll wash and wax it and.... That's about it. It's running great.

I changed the oil, brake and clutch fluid and gearbox oil in April before the Log track day.

I'll do another oil and filter change, check all the belts and hoses, clean and reoil the air filter and put it back up on the lift, once the weather stops being so nice.:driving:

Other than that, just the usual check of all the bolts and nuts to make sure they are torqued.

I had a locknut come loose at Barber going down the third straight. It was on the bolt that went thru the sidelight marker on the left front wing and thru the wingstay. I noticed the clam starting to flap and at 90+ and thought, hmm, I've heard people say that clams cause some front end lift, but I didn't think that they would flap prior to takeoff.

Just goes to prove that even nyloks can vibrate loose. Everyone should do a good check over of all their cars even if they don't track or autox them.

Mazda,

What electric power steering unit are you planning to use and where does it mount? I've been considering power steering for my car as well.

I met a Stalker owner the other day who had installed a Chevette rack with a pump from IIRC, a Toyota or Lexus.

My mod plans for the winter are:

Finish up the Brooklands screen's mount and get them on the car.

Try again on the ceramic coating of exhaust manifold, turbo casting and downpipe.

Install rev light.

And if there are funds left over, a set of Minilite style wheels.

Mazda, would it not have been easier to take all the body panels off your Corvette and drive it around? It will have to be renamed from Frankin7 to Hicost7 or Z07.

My winter mods are push to spring, remodeling new house and moving are first.

1. SS fender guards

2. Polish aluminum

3. build aluminum hard frame soft top with doors

4. Polish aluminum

5. consider painting whole car

6. finish polishing aluminum

Great point Tom.

I reccomend checking out the book nuts bolts and fasteners by carroll smith. It has some great information in there. With the vibration our cars produce, it's lucky that we don't have more problems with fasteners coming loose. Above all, don't use the garbage fasteners you find in the hardware stores - including washers. Use quality stuff. Buy a bolt drilling jig and safety wire anything that can come loose and ruin your day.

As for me, I plan to add miles to the odometer. Winter is when southern california blatting is at its best!

skip, I was gonna go with a unit from a cobalt. there are a number of cars that offer the power steering unit integrated into the steering shaft. I just ordered a unit from UK from a vauxhaul similar to this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Vauxhall-corsa-power-steering-column-with-electric-unit_W0QQitemZ260481454168QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item3ca5e79058&_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177

The reason I went with that, is there is a guy in the uk who sells a cheap module to emulate the vehicle speed sensor (using a dash mounted pot) to make the steering effort adjustable. the whole setup including shipping was $200. The same solution should work with a cobalt unit, except I didn't feel like looking up which vehicle signals are needed and have to build something to fake them.

Projects:

Raise Roll Bar height and add power steering. I am going to use a chevette rack and a gen. 3 Toyota MR2 Spyder power steering pump. Just waiting for the pump to arrive! AutoX with the fat sticky tires really gives a work out.

What's this "easier" you speak of?

If I did that to my vette, then I'd have to buy another one.

I took a look at that system and I don't have space for it anywhere along my current steering column. The heat from the turbo would probably fry the motor and electronics as well since the turbo sits right next to the column.

1. fix exhaust mounts. ASAP. hopefully as soon as i'm back from ALMS next week i can fab up something. 3 autoXs left this season.

2. fix (or buy CF front wings) front wings. silver dollar sized holes got honed thru the fiberglass by the crappy NY roads and bumpy AX lot. been running w/o them for almost a month. a friend may help me repair the fiberglass, but the there are many cracks in the gel coat. probably relegate them to AX duty but they don't really get damaged from cones.

I will have to examine teh motor mounts closely because of teh rubber failing in the exhaust mounts. fluid changes as well. hopefully attach the poppers for the half doors.

I found a shop locally that interested on working on Snake Bit so they will

3. fab a cone bar for the passenger side

4. install the quick release steering column if I still can not.

5. fab a wheel/tyre rack that attaches to teh roll bar.

6. reattach a popper base for the boot cover

Box, re: the tire rack for the rollbar, Michael D. had one for his Caterham that worked pretty well, since he has a trailer now you might want to ping him about his. Don't know if it will fit your Sumo Version though.

i checked the blatchat threads and all the rollbars are different and needed basically to be measured to make sure the rack would fit the jig that was going to be made. I have bookmarked some pictures from them for a starting point. Also, the rack would be larger than a normal rack 2x205, 2x225 w/ room to expand to 2x225, 2x255 width tyres.

the exhaust is my major concern. I actually ended up w/ my first FTD in between repair jobs.
