1967 Birkin for sale on Autotrader Classics

Croc

Recommended Posts

Decent spec and looks nice. Good price at $23500.

:iagree:

New Birkin kits are 20K +. This is a nearly-new running and drivinig car for just a little more at 23,500. With 2,500 miles, it sounds win-win to me if someone's in the market for a Seven.

Seller has yet to respond to my inquiry

Then again I thought I had a line on a SPF S1 and that owner in the middle of discussions dropped off the face of the earth :banghead:

For one thing its in Washington and getting it registered in NJ would be the main issue. I bought Croc's old seven and it has the de dion rear. I added more padding to the seat and it makes it more livable on long drives (750+mi). Short distances I wouldn't worry about it being a solild rear. I believe Brikins come w/ adjustable GAZ shocks you you'd be able to adjust to suit your preferences.

OK, as some of you know, I'm shopping. At the risk of opening a very old (and potentially contentious topic), this car has a solid rear. Is an IRS worth waiting for?

If I had the choice at the same time and same money I might take the IRS car but would not wait or pay more. I have a live axle Birkin and done several multi-1000 mile trips without any discomfort. Actually I can drive a full day in the Seven with less back pain than in my Honda Accord and mostly my wife comes along for the ride without comfort complaints. You may have to upgrade the seats anyway to make it fit your anatomy. Birkin is not known for good seats.

I have not driven the IRS Birkin but tried a few times a DeDion Caterham. Did not notice much difference but maybe I am just a numbbutt. For track use it is supposedly even less of a difference. On todays' Internet forums I guess everything can be contentious but we are usually mild mannered here and I am sure other folks have different opinion and experience.

I've driven/ridden in a handful of solid axle Birkins and owned an IRS Birkin. I now own my Stalker which has a solid axle . . . it's all in what you want. Sevens are like candy bars, they will all satisfy the sweet tooth; pick one.

Having driven both IRS Birkin and Caterham, de Dion Caterham and live axle Birkin and Caterham I can say the IRS makes an extraordinary difference - the cars are less thrown off line by bumps/craters/potholes/ridges. Some people may feel this changes the character of the car - I think it just makes it much faster point to point. To be honest I did not feel the de Dion made much improvement over the regular live axle. So yes an IRS is desirable but I have never seen one down at this price point - lowest was around $28k. For this Birkin's price I would change to 13 inch wheels and increase the profile of the tires to keep the same diameter - you would reduce unsprung weight, soften the ride and the handling would still be just as good.

Your bigger issue is whether you can register it - we can discuss that on Saturday - PM sent.

I have had 2 Dedion Caterhams and also an IRS Birkin. So far I have never been able to notice a difference in handling. Maybe I have not been on bumpy roads? I have not driven a solid axle version of any se7en but I had a solid axle AH Sprite and it did not like bumps, esp in curves.
