Kitcat
I have a Caterham 6 sp transmission. After 3 recent days on the track I have a hole in the middle of my right hand from the abrasive nature of my stubby little gearshift handle, or knob. Also, I am still missing shifts and am hoping a longer handle will give me the needed leverage to put the shift lever where it suposed to go. So, does anyone have a source for a replacement? My Googling has lead nowhere, ditto my look at the Caterham home page/parts dept.
MHKflyer52
Kitcat, Why not just replace he shift knob with one that is not the round ball type to a longer type such as these. http://www.twmshiftknobs.com/shiftknobs/desert-eagle-shiftknobs.php :driving:
coffee break
How 'bout a "T" type knob. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/huu-1530020/overview/
jlumba81
How about using driving gloves? I usually drive w leather gloves. It helps w/ the hand fatigue from steering wheel vibrations when I do long drives.
blubarisax
A sequential gearbox would do the trick!
slomove
That is the solution. I know you can get shift knobs with other body parts, too.....:jester: Sorry, could not resist :toetap05: http://cache.jalopnik.com/assets/images/12/2008/08/medium_Shifter-Hand.jpg
Kitcat
Thx guys. Since it is a Caterham designed transmission, I assumed they wld use a combo of Wentworth and other obscure metrics and that nothing wld fit. I use a driving glove already. This car was driven in endurance races like the 25 hour of Thunderhill, apparently by REAL men, not wimps like me. Maybe they thot that hand pain wld keep the drivers more alert? My favorite suggestion from above is Blubarisax's, followed closely by Slomove's but I will probably opt for somerthing off Martin's list. Kitcat
OK, I followed Martin's lead and ended up back where I started: does anyone know what thread size is used on the Caterham 6 sp? Martin's link asks that I choose from a lengthy list, starting with M8x1.25. I assume that's metric. It also has a list of thread sizes in inches. Any thots? Go to a parts store and purchase a thread pitch gauge such as the one pictured below. Use it to find your thread pitch.

There are shift knobs for sale that fit Caterham 5-speed and 6-speed as well, suggesting it is the same thread as the T9 which is M10x1.5 (IIRC)
jlumba81
How about a drill with a polishing pad + polish and smooth down that shift knob?
bball7754
My Caterham has a spacer/adapter for the knob. It fits over the T9 shift lever, and has a larger thread for the knob than the lever itself. The knob itself is "rubber", and looks like it came from the Merkur/Sierra.

bsimon
Ford Type 9 lever is 3/8-16. Caterham 6 speed 'box has a Quaife type 9 lever with a M10X1.5 thread. Aftermarket Quaife Type 9 levers may have either M10X1.5 or M12X1.75.
Kitcat
Thx guys, I will order the M10x1.5.
Slonie
At the risk of committing thread nercromancy (oops, too late)... @Kitcat, did that M10x1.5 work for you? I've been considering buying the Quaife knob and they show 3/8 UNC as the Caterham-specific thread. Although I also see that 1) Some Caterham shifters have adaptors on them 2) M10 x 1.5 is very close to 3/8 UNC so maybe they still thread on. More pertinently, Quaife UK seems to be about the only place to get the 3/8 UNC version of this knob, and their shipping cost from the UK is astronomical. Maybe they're not used to shipping anything smaller than a differential or gearset. If folks were interested in a stateside group shipping buy... (or if we could find a Quaife distributor to bring some in)
Kitcat
My first question on seeing this long forgotten thread was, what is necromancy:)! Followed by, what is a M10x1.5? Having gotten up to speed, so to speak, I can say I am relieved that necromancy is not similar to necrophillia! As far as the substance of your question, the new shifter did fit and was much better than what the car came with. It did not tear up my hand but my shifting issues turned to be a result of broken flywheel bolts gumming up the works not the shifter handle.
IamScotticus
I'm looking for a standard 5 spd Sierra / XR4Ti shift knob.
MV8
Racerwalsh black nylon looks identical to the quaife and not much more expensive than the materials to make it. Original merkur shift knob is an odd shape. https://www.ebay.com/itm/364307907232 https://racerwalsh.com/product/nylon-shift-knob-rwa3151/

I'm rather sentimental about putting the same transmission in my 7.
