Media Banned from Pits During all F1 Sessions

I'd hardly call that an over-reaction. The pits are by far the most dangerous place at any race and the camera guys cant wear helmets, etc.. due to the gear that they carry

Perhaps safety protocol and procedure will be reviewed and revised accordingly.

One idea might be to mount helmet cams on the pit crew and stream the up-close-and-personal video to the masses.

The fact that media person was the unfortunate target of a errant wheel should not be the only reason for banning media from pit lane. That wheel could have hit anyone. There must be more to it than that.

The FIA's point is that most team personnel who are in the pit lane (not pit wall) are in full protective gear with helmets, visors, firesuits, etc... The camera guys on the other hand have no safety gear, are lugging heavy gear and are usually moving around while focussing on what they are shooting.

While the media were the first ones banned I can see them starting to require full gear for team bosses or anyone else who moves from pit wall to garages during the race.

+1 on xcarguys helmet cam idea. IIRC there were a few tire changers with helmet cams last season.

and in other news....due to tires flying over fences, spectators have been banned from NASCAR races. :D

As long as the banned fans dont show up at the Austin race I'm cool with that ;)

Concur.

We were at the Spa 6Hr Historics a while back watching from a spectator position behind an 8 foot chain link fence that was a long way behind an Armco barrier along the uphill just past au Rouge. It's pretty much the fastest section of the circuit. A big engined car traveling ~150 mph lost a front wheel just past the exit of the turn. The wheel/tire went waaaay up in the air, probably 100 feet or so. All of us in the area scrambled to get out of the way. It likely would have been fatal if it had hit someone.

Maybe the organizers should ban spectators?

Pussies! :D

Morgan I had seen that before but only the first part of it showing you in the direct path and betting feet with only seconds to spare and not the entire clip.

I find it just amazing that the camera inside the car kept working and that the driver and nav seemed so calm even when you came back into the view to help them. I have to ask did you get a good shot of the crash.

In my 20 years of SCCA corner working, I saw a few flying objects. The rear body work of a Lola T600 flew off at top speed. It would have cleared a 3 story house and fortunately landed in a service area. A loose wheel destroyed a corner workers cooler @ turn 2, and a motorcycle landed on TOP of the turn 3 corner station.

At an auto-X the guy on the start line in front of me had forgotten to tighten the bolts on one of his wheels. So when he dropped the clutch, his V8 spun the wheel right off and up into the air, (how high will it go?). I watched it in wonder from the strapped in confines of my Miata, trapped from getting out or moving my vehicle.

Fortunately it missed me and everyone else when it finally came down. Not remotely as exciting as MoPho's brush with an inglorious end, but I can still see that spining wheel floating high above me, tho it was 15+ years ago.

Well Travis Pastrana doesn't have both chopsticks in the chow mein, for him it was just another day. Christian (co-driver) is a rock solid dude most of the time, but he was bouncing off the walls after he got out of the car (as was I), I think he was in shock at first.

The worst part was worrying about what I was going to find when I got to the car.

I had been shooting rally for about 7 years at that point and never had a car crash in front of my lens, and all I remember is thinking "hell yeah, this is going to be awesome!" and then "oh shit!" LOL

...And yet the Bright Sparks of F1 want to lower the pit lane speed to minimize/prevent loose wheels from flying loose.

Went to the 2006 Pumpkin Chunkin in Delaware. A catapult misfired throwing a pumpkin back toward the crowd. I lost it in the sun. Luckily it fell in the only open spot in crowd.
