FS: Street legal R1-powered Locost

Due to an increasingly-demanding work schedule accompanied by the extreme weather seasons here in Nebraska, I think it's probably best to let someone else enjoy this car.

I purchased it in October of 2012 with the thoughts of using it as a weekend driver and an occasional autocross car. SCCA moved all of the local autox events an hour away from me, so this car has only seen a handful of weekend morning drives since purchasing it.

I'm the third owner. First owner built a roller, second owner finished the car, I bought it with plans to get it sorted and get it road worthy. Car drives great, has plenty of premium components, is easy to maintain, no vibrations, and is just a blast to drive. Fact is, I just don't have the time to spend on the car or even drive it. More (most?) importantly, my wife would like a 3rd car that she can drive around town too. I haven't had any mechanical issues with the car, but there may be some additional sorting needed.

Car is completely street legal and is registered, titled, and plated as a 1963 Assembled Lotus Seven Replica.

Short video driving around the mean streets of Omaha:

- 2006 Yamaha R1 motor.

- 175hp stock, higher with included (not installed) Power Commander

- 84/85 RX7 GSL (disk brakes, LSD) rear end. 3.9:1 (4.11:1?) ratio.

- Miata front spindles

- CMC chassis & bodywork

- R1 radiator

- Oil pan baffle (and a spare)

- Paddle shifter (sequential transmission)

- Heavy duty clutch springs installed

- Electric gear indicator

- Electric parking brake

- JAZ fuel cell

- GAZ coilovers

- Brand new Yokohama AD08 205/50-15 tires.(Installed June 2013, less than 200mi) Still have the nubs on them.

- Team Dynamics wheels

- Momo quick-release steering wheel

- Schroth 5-point belts with quick release

- Kirkey seats

- Fire extinguisher

- Braille lightweight battery

- ITG filter

- Birkin rear lights

- Tilton pedals with balance bar

- Less than 200mi on brake pads & fluid

- 130" long, 65" wide

Other:

- Full glass windshield, frame, and mounting kit (from Kinetic) are sitting here ready to install - http://goo.gl/4Ztspk

- SpeedoHealer & PowerCommander both included but not installed

- Plenty of other miscellaneous parts & leftovers (bolts and whatnot) from the R1.

- Chassis was extended by 4" by previous owner due to his height (6' 5"). Due to my lack of height (5' 9.875"), I moved the seat up a few inches. Gained a bit of storage space behind the seat this way - great place to store the registration, insurance info, and a small tool bag. If you're tall, there's room to move the seat back.

- No reverse

- Car is wrapped in 3M matte orange vinyl. The installer could have done a better job around the edges. Original color underneath is BMW "Urban Green". Paint wasn't holding up very well.

- Oil level sensor is likely bad, as the oil light blinks on the instrument cluster. Oil is clean and the level is perfect, so haven't bothered to replace the part until it's time for an oil change. The new part is included, just not installed.

- Car hasn't seen any repeated, heavy, cornering or braking loads yet. Car turns and brakes very well, but care should be taken here before you make sure everything is sorted out.

- Speedometer is completely incorrect. Odometer mileage is incorrect because of this. A SpeedoHealer is included but not installed. I used a cell phone to get GPS speed. Odometer reads 5130 miles. The donor motorcycle apparently had

The closest 'auto playground' to me is MSR Cresson, a minimum six-hour trek at best. Man, if I had somewhere to play that was only an hour away . . . !

I'd keep the car and play when time (TIME/MONEY FOR ME) permitted . . . you only live once.

Ha! Okay, okay ... while all of that is true, getting something that my wife wants to drive as well is at the top of the list. No sense in having a car sitting around in the garage that she has no interest in driving.

I guess I do have it pretty good here. 1hr southwest to Lincoln for SCCA (home of the runoffs), and 1 hours southeast to Glenwood, IA where Mid-America Motorplex is.

Only one car that your wife won't drive. I have 3 mine won't drive. :ack: Heck, she hasn't been out in my Caterham since I assembled it in 2000. :svengo: Trust me, she'll get over it. You just need to be patient.

Tom

haha ... i could be patient if I had a bigger garage!

Don't know where you are in Arkansas but I would think maybe Hallett outside Tulsa would be a similar distance or closer. It is a wonderful little track.....great for seven type cars. They run a monthly series called COMMA with which is pretty inexpensive. The track and the series are run by the Stephens family and they do a great job.

That is a pretty nice looking car. I like the way it sounds too. Once sorted out this will be fantastic.

I can understand your situation. I have lots of activity close to me, but I have too many irons in the fire and time to work on and enjoy mine is not what I would like either.

Because of other projects I needed the room in my garage. I ended up finding a 20 foot enclosed trailer to use as a mobile garage. It is working out great. Plus when I want to use it on the track or go somewhere that is far away I have it to trailer the car and anything else. I used it 3 times this year to take the car to the track over 2 hours away. If you have the room for a trailer, you might want to consider trying it. If you are anything like the rest of us you are going to be sorry you got rid of it. I don't imagine you will have any problem selling it.

Dave,

While I agree that I'll probably regret selling it, there's always the possibility of buying another one down the road.

Space is definitely one of my main issues, especially now - my wife informed me the other night that she found her "dream car", and we're going to take a look at it this weekend. If we end up buying it, I'm definitely in a pickle - 4 cars with a 3 car garage. Unfortunately, there's no room for a trailer - and I don't currently own anything that would pull one. Plus, finding the time to actually drive the thing is getting increasingly difficult.

Thanks!

Damn. I wish I could swing it, and wish it weren't so stretched... Looks great...

I can see many of my mistakes have been sorted... Best.

Thanks! I enjoyed looking at your build pictures and seeing some of the changes since I took ownership. I was a bit worried about the stretch originally, but after seeing it (and driving it), it's of no concern. Plus, I've got the added benefit of (some) storage! It really is a heck of a fun car ... who knows, maybe I'll end up with another one someday.

since the majority of people who have emailed me have asked about the weight... I haven't put it on a scale, but looking at Jeff's car (which is about identical to mine), he lists his as being 1138lbs. Taking away the weight of the full roll cage, I'd have to guess mine is right around 1000lbs, possibly a little less.
