New Morgan 3 Wheeler

Has anyone here seen(in the flesh) or driven the car?

 

I thought about this car when looking at the previous thread " the whole point " by Terry; seems to have many similarities to points raised in that thread.

It looks great and performs well, but, wow, what a price .

 

But on the plus side it could be a life saver, no woman likes 3 wheels on a car.....

 

I was just thinking,

if the Dragon ever says,

"You are not serious about buying that 7 thing are you"?

just say ,

"Well the new Morgan Trike was my first choice but I thought long and hard and this appeared to be a far more practical choice for us as a family ".

I've seen a couple. They're really cute. They've done a very nice job of hiding the right amount of modernity that it appears to be very usable without looking wrong. An example: the rear tire is quite a bit fatter than it "ought to be" on a vintage one. I'm sure that helps the cars balance, and you really don't notice the off proportion because of the way it's tucked up under. The two front tires are closer to the correct size.

 

I've never driven one, alas. But I think that this Chris Harris video does a good job of showing how they compare to a 7 on the road.

I got to sit in one at a C&C about a year ago. More difficult to get in and out of than my Caterham and I didn't have that secure, one with the car feeling. When I started the engine the vibration was horrendous. Even revving the engine up a bit didn't do much to smooth out the vibration.

 

Talking to the owner who was also a Morgan dealer I got the impression that it was not a fun car for long distance travel. He trailers it to and from out of town events.

 

Fun to look at but it left me with no desire to own one.

I think Chris Harris' comment in the comparison video about driving the Morgan "...it says I like the principals of driving, I like being busy..." (at 4:45) is right on the point of these cars.

 

This, to me, is a great summation of why I am driving a Seven. No ABS, traction control, or other driving aids. I have as much fun in my 40HP (at best) '59 FIAT 600 as I do in my 250+HP Birkin. The Morgan would be a blast for the same reasons; funky, a car you drive, basic and uncomplicated. One would look great in my garage...

Have been a lurker and meaning to register but reading this post caused me to sign up.

 

Had the opportunity to drive one of the new Morgan 3 wheelers about 6 weeks ago. A friend bought one and asked if I'd like to drive it. Very well made and put together. Piece of art but as much a toy as a Caterham is, the Morgan is more so. Can't imagine driving one (or riding in it) for more than a 1/2 hr. Felt relatively stable although did not have the chance to push it at all. Very small and tight on the inside. Made my elise feel like a limo. Only drove it for a couple miles.

 

Lets put it this way, when I saw they were first coming out I thought it would be really cool to have one. After driving it for a couple miles, I knew I could cross it off my list.

Do you know by chance what he paid for it?

The reason I ask is that I know their MSRP list prices make Caterham look reasonable and rumor has it big discounts are common.

The "new" MOG is a nice nostalgic toy. The bargain among three wheelers is and has been the Grinnall Scorpion 111. I had one and found it to be both a fun track car and a competent long range tourer.

 

I might get another unless I find a '7' that tickles my fancy.

I've visited the dealer in Seattle (and originator of the design from which the Morgan 3-wheeler is based)... I thought the base price was more like $47,000 or $48,000. Considering that this is for a complete turn-key toy that is very nicely built, the price seems not too terribly high..?
