Climate Change Anybody?

Recommended Posts

I know, it is chilly on the East Coast.

This was our 12/30 drive (Santa Barbara/Ventura back country). Somewhat nice at 75 degrees. This weekend I was out there again and the temperature was 83 degrees at lake Cachuma, breaking the all time record by 2 degrees. I know, it is just a weather coincidence but still weird.

I just had a note from a friend in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan a few minutes ago......minus 49 Celsius with the windchill factor. Yikes. Glad I moved.

And he lives there on purpose? :ack:

That makes current the -5F at my place seem like a heat wave!

As a weather nerd, I can report that it was 68 on 1/7/08 in Cincy, tomorrow it will be -10F.

It is so cold that I took the wheels and tires off my Caterham yesterday and brought them in out of the deep freeze.

-22 F (-46 with windchill) in Minneapolis currently with an expected high today of -18 !!!

It seems the climate around here goes through this same "climate change" cycle about once every twelve months - sometimes its a little warmer but rarely is it any colder. And yes I do choose to live here :-)

Define all time record.

For Lake Cachuma that was 83 F for the first week of January. The previous record was 81 degrees for that time of the year in 2002, but no mention of a previous record or since when they started measuring.

I happened to look that up on Weather Underground because I was wondering how hot when I drove through.

....Be hard to convince a bunch of folks today...

The whole thing has become a political token and both sides make it a matter of principle to be right and ridicule the other side. And on both sides many people are weighing in who are completely clueless and just regurgitating stuff they see on their favorite channel or the preferred blogs. And also on both sides special interest are fanning the flames.

Personally, I believe that the current freak weather pattern is indeed mostly a random thing and has not much to do with climate change. After all, I don't know how warm it is in Kenya, Laos or Siberia right now. And, while I tend to believe that the actual long term (global average) warming trend is at least accelerated by human activity, I am quite fatalistic about it. We can not solve much smaller problems so why would one think we can do something about this issue.

But then, I really don't have a clue, either...

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but if I had to be plucked off of a polar icecap because my ICEBREAKER ship got stuck in the ice, I might seriously revisit my views on global warming. Now where did I sit my coffee?

BTW, I just saw a dog chasing a cat, and it's so cold outside that they were both huddled together.

Something seriously wrong when it's warmer in Alaska than Atlanta or Orlando…

I grew up in southwestern Michigan. In the winter the local TV weather (out of South Bend, IN) would regularly report the temperature from Anchorage, Alaska. It was often quite a bit warmer (10-15 degrees) there than at home. This always caused quite a bit of consternation (well before the concept of global warming took hold) for those who didn't realize that Anchorage is a sea port. As a result the ocean water moderates the temperature in that city to a large degree.
