Karl.. you were right. Let the Caterham performance upgrade journey begin! :willy_nilly:

Dangerous words! It can become an expensive hobby. The main reason I ran you down in the maroon Caterham with a passenger and 60hp less was turns 2-3-4 and the bowl (and to a much lesser extent turn 5). Everywhere else you were getting away from me and we were even at turns 1 and 7 (maybe even slightly losing out on turn 7). A good chunk of that advantage was track familiarity with how fast you can hustle a seven through those corners.

My cheap(ish) suggestions:

- 13 inch wheels. If you go for the ZZR tires then you need to know that they like a lot of front negative camber to work well. I don't do this as the maroon Caterham is primarily a road car so I leave the standard front camber on it. So they will wear in a strange fashion.

- aeroscreen - the difference the removal of the windscreen makes in acceleration and top speed is astonishing. With the Caterham captive nut brackets the switch between windscreen and aeroscreen is easy 5-10 mins job.

- Corner weight the car. My quickest times in the CSR were always set with a passenger. Issue - it was corner weighted with 2 people in the car. So I never felt entirely happy pushing on when on track by myself. So set it up for 1 person and live with the compromise for the road as you will never be pushing the car as close to its limits on the road.

- Get some track instruction and improve yourself and get up to speed with the track quicker.

Forget hp - you spend $5000 to get 20hp and not much advantage. Everything else is cheaper.

Can I please get a copy of your video to include in the group video I plan to make? Will send an email offline.

OK, my turn:

Just back after 1700+ miles. Some shout-outs are in order:

1] Croc (Michael Johnson) and YellowSS (Tom Gavel). Wow, epic event. I know I am just another voice in the chorus at this point but terrific work putting this together, herding cats, fighting weather, herding more cats, dealing with schedule changes that threw all plans off, herding yet more cats....The "banquet/awards ceremony" Saturday night was unforgettable. So was the 4th of July dinner on the water at Don Fehrbach's place. I would return next weekend if there were a repeat tho happy to wait til next year.

2] NJMP. What a place! Everyone one was so nice. No frowns, no attitude. The whole philosophy of this world-class facility was: How can we make you happier, your experience better? The food was incredible. If you ever have been on a cruise where you have almost too many choices of fabulous food, you have some idea of what we experienced.

3] The wives and girlfriends: what women! Not a fluff chick in the group. Maybe they have to be special to put up with us and our cars/hobby?

4] The USA7s gang. Everyone one was friendly/helpful. I had a dodgy hydraulic clutch and was ready to trailer home. MichaelD, BBall, Pete, George Alderman and others descended on the car and trouble shot the problem, had the fluid drained and replaced, and the clutch operational in 30'! Thx guys!

5] The weather gods. Yes, the a.m. sessions of the first day were rain-filled or wet/drying but it soon cleared and turned into 2 of the most perfect track-weather days I have ever had. Hurricane Arthur threatened, but a run-of the mill Jersey storm showed up and kicked Arthur's butt out to sea (Lesson, dont mess with Jersey!).

6] Pictures? That will have to wait as I left the camera cord in the trailer.

7] I did download the one session of video where I actually remembered to turn on my GoPro. It includes a big "off" at turn 7 where I was focused on Mario's Storker bumper and forgot to drive. Other highlight of the video is Shane's Storker doing a "warp speed" past me in the bowl and onto the straight.

How great was this weekend? I started out under the weather on Friday morning but at least rallied for the BBQ. After that it was straight out fun! I have to say, I never imagined karting could be so violent.

In the past I've not spent much time on this forum, but having met so many new friends, I'll be checking in more often.

Glad everyone made it home safely with no incidents - it still amazes me how far some of you guys traveled to make this event. Thank you!

And finally, many thanks to Croc and Tom for an awesome event! I can't wait until next year (let me help you organize).

SK400. After reviewing your list I wld agree with the areo screen idea. A Brooklands screen is more expensive, but is also an effective solution. As you know, I chased you for a coupla laps (and visa versa). The only place I thot you cld get speed was the entry to the bowl, where it seemed thet you were overly cautious. Everywhere else, it looked like the hammer was down!

And, a trailer upgrade mite be in order:)! Talk to Karl?

Alright, alright, alright...

Time to get ready for next year....

2. Swap the windscreen for the carbon aero deflector kit - should help get 5 mph at the end of the straight . . . .

. . . - aeroscreen - the difference the removal of the windscreen makes in acceleration and top speed is astonishing. With the Caterham captive nut brackets the switch between windscreen and aeroscreen is easy 5-10 mins job.

Seb,

Running Brooklands on my Storker (:jester:). If you can put a CF aero screen on that beautiful red Cat, do so. The Brooklands look great, and, are effective as stated by Kitcat. However, they are relatively heavy. The aero screen would be an easy way to shed a little weight while increasing performance.

:jester: Well, after three days of steady driving, Sauvé and I arrived in Galveston to catch up with the family. Sauvé was pretty tired after having to pitch in on Storker towing duties (no free rides for diaper dude). :toetap05: Once here, I gave him a chance to rest while I unloaded the truck. Right away, he fell in love. I think it's going to be a fairly serious relationship; he brought her a gift right off the bat. And I do hope the bird is female and Sauvé’s intentions aren't dangerously misguided. :svengo:

Finally getting around to putting a few event photos on the thread. This was Thursday, July 3; first time at NJMP. Very impressed with the complex.

A few random shots from the Friday morning tech inspection. A handful of us decided to brave the rain and hit the track even though Hurricane Arthur was being pushed out to sea by a much welcomed (lesser of two evils) frontal system.

Sorry, not going to tag anyone in these photos; still putting some names / user names together and don't want to leave anyone out or 'muck' it up with inaccuracies . . . . .

A few posts of random pit shots from both Friday and Saturday. It's fairly easy to tell which day was which; overcast and rainy on Friday and nary a cloud in the sky on Saturday.

It's already been said, but a huge thanks to the group for and amazing weekend, welcoming me, and contributing to my se7ens addiction with a ride on the track. Next year I hope to be back with my Birkin. (Does anyone have details on the "right" way to modify a raceline duratec wet sump to prevent oil starvation?)

As promised-

The Good: I've uploaded my pictures from the weekend for people to peruse or download any decent pics of yourself.

The Bad: not having time, and to avoid missing anyone I uploaded MOST of what I took.

&

The Ugly: some of the shots are a little fuzzy if you zoom in too far.

Thanks, Paul! Yet another plus to the weekend: our own photographer. Those are first good pix I've seen of my car on the track. I'm looking forward to seeing you and your sorted Birkin next year. Most experts recommend skinny, waxed street tires to start with. (See a previous thread.) Not that I'm looking for any advantage any way I can get one.

(Non-7) people I've spoken to have been puzzled by the consistently great camaraderie during the weekend. MichaelD, "We're all missing the same screw." explained it perfectly.

And a shot of his mount. Great colors and superb trackday patina. It looks even better in person:
