  3. Thanks Ian. I had thought of forming a piece of aluminum to mount in the front part of the hood opening to block the direct flow of air to the filter. You're idea seems a lot easier! Bruce :7drive:

  5. Thanks Bart, I've used K&N's on my MGB for many years, and I had read that it was not good to over-oil the elements and that they would filter better with a light coating of dust/dirt on them. But I had never seen them where the red oil was being blown through the white filter material. When I took off the hood after my first long drive, there was a distinct line on the filter where the hood was covering it the red oil was there, and where it was exposed to the airstream, it was completely white. Over the next couple hundred miles with a few re-oilings, it seems to be retaining the oil better. Bruce :7drive:

  7. Mazda, The 70mm dimension is the diameter. All my wheels with that pattern are held on with M5-0.8 countersunk screws so they should be 5mm. Bruce :7drive:
  8. Hi Mazda, I think the Momo, Sparco, OMP, and maybe some others use a 6-bolt x 2.75" (or 70mm) pattern. I think some other wheels use a 5-bolt (Grant?) or 3-bolt pattern (some of the racing stuff/karts), but are not as common. Hope this helps, Bruce :7drive:

  14. Mid-30's, 5:00am, no top, no side curtains, no heat, NOBODY on the road, 7.5 miles of backroads on the way to work, and the Birkin is running great. What a blast!!! :7fume:

  20. To anyone using K&N filters that stick out of the side of the hood, are you having to re-oil the elements on a regular basis? It seems like after I go for a ride of maybe 50 miles, I'll check the elements and the front filter area that's exposed to the airstream is to the point where you can barely see the red oil in the white cotton material. Is this typical? I'm probably going to get an ITG or similar filter to use on a regular basis, but I do like the classic look of the K&N's. And yes, I've heard all the negative reports on the K&N's. If you shine a light through them it is a little puzzling to see how the heck they could filter... :ack: Any advice or personal experiences would be appreciated. Thanks, Bruce :7drive:

  23. Thanks Gert/Al. I'm going to do a more thorough check for leaks this weekend and play around with the vent line routing. You don't smell it when driving, but after leaving it parked in the garage you can definitely smell it....:ack: Al - Did your mechanic run the vent inside the rollbar? And yes, I(we) plan on being at Carlisle WITH the Birkin! Thanks again, Bruce :7drive:

  25. All, I've been having a blast driving the Birkin to work and some quick pleasure drives. I've made a few adjustments to the Emerald map to get rid of a rich running condition on low/no load sites and fixed a couple moderately lean conditions at some higher load/rpm sites. One thing I haven't been able to correct is a fuel smell from the back of the car that I can't trace to a visible leak. I have a Fuel Safe fuel cell that I installed and plumbed the same way the original Birkin tank was installed. Here's a couple pictures of the installation and fuel vent cannister. The small filter is actually hooked up to the rear end breather. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/316676069_20080425_0001.JPG http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/459852140_20080425_0006.JPG I'm seeing some fuel in the clear hose from the check valve (on the lower left of the 1st picture) going to the fuel vent cannister after driving. Since I believe this is a roll-over shut-off valve, I think that could be normal with a full tank. The fuel has gone over the top of fuel cannister and rested in the bottom of the loop but when I removed the fuel vent cannister, I didn't see any fuel collected. What I was wondering is if I'm doing anything obviously wrong that would be causing the smell. I was thinking of turning the check valve around 180 degrees, running the vent line up the left inside of the rear bodywork, back down again after a 180 degree loop and then continue the existing route to the fuel vent cannister. I was hoping that might keep some of the fuel from making it to the cannister. I was also concerned that the fuel return that's hooked up to a bulkhead fitting in the fill plate was causing some problems when the gas was being dumped back into the fuel cell, so I made up a 3/8" line to take the fuel closer to the bottom of the bladder between a couple of the foam blocks.
